View Full Version : The Blimp has Already Earned its Money

Some posters seem a bit confused about the purpose and worth of the blimp-- trust me, it has already earned its money, at least for the first month. We have generated tons of free media coverage (or "earned" media for those of you in the PR business) off of the mere idea of the blimp, and we are going to get tons more whenever it launches. Then of course, there will be whatever value we get from folks who actually see the blimp and "Google Ron Paul"

Most importantly, speaking as a former journalist and marketing/PR guy, the blimp reinforces the Ron Paul campaign brand-- that is why it is so powerful. It is fun, improvisational, grass roots, a little bit "out there", a celebration of freedom-- it reinforces that the campaign is a fun place to be and not dour and depressing like the other guys. Mitt Romney could never pull off having a campaign blimp (nor, for that matter, could any of the other candidates)

Yes, we will inevitably take some potshots and jokes about RP being "full of hot air", but more people will be laughing with us than laughing at us. The blimp will build momentum for us in ways that traditional marketing could not. I was talking to two guys at work today who are only mildly politically involved and they had both heard about the blimp. You can't buy that sort of publicity with a $400K ad buy.

Congratulations to everyone who has been involved with the blimp project-- we appreciate your imagination and hard work!

The Blimp team needs to get its act together. Many press reports already have the blimp flying around. Not a great way to start.

Nobody had ten minutes to update the website this past weekend to get the story straight, if not for us customers, at least for the media.

So I don't want to cast out blame, but I do agree that the web site needs to be updated-- and FOR GOD SAKES-- get rid of the new reference to the Hindenburg on the blimp site!?!-- That is not an analogy we want people having in mind!

Nonetheless, great job to everyone -- we know how hard you are working

If the blimp makes it to boston this project will be an instant success.

Any doubts anybody might have had about the blimp paying for itself and also being a cost effective aid to promoting other Ron Paul grassroots efforts, like the Tea Party, should have totally evaporated 4-5 days ago when CNN did this story here...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jw2nmbcnFmY

Just imagine now, when it's actually in the air, all cameras and eyes skyward. No body can ignore this unique story rising above all the same old usual, often boring, political stomping reports the media churns out daily.

Local media will especially get a kick out of reporting about it coming to their town and especially from up in it... if they are nice, as it makes its tour around the states. Tie that in with a story of a couple local 'Make A Wish' kids also getting to go along for added press! Betcha after the first story like that, the blimp will be going atop a lot of other kids wish list quick!

This thing really is huge, in so many ways, especially because no other campaign can ever dilute it by copying us now without being an obvious Johnny-Come-Lately un-original copycat.

Think about, too, all the other candidates, especially those who could have afforded it, reaming out their consultants and campaign managers for not having thought of it first!

I've just always liked this idea on so many different levels, and while I hope the blimp project people smooth out the rough edges soon, I forgive them a lot seeing all that they have done and continue to scramble to do. Thank you, guys!!

UP, UP, AND AWAY!!

Someone should be hitting up Google for some money as well, considering they are getting advertised on the Blimp as well...

Just for kicks, I built a media tracking database to pull down the Google news feed, add in a bit more, and run some numbers on it. It's really rough, it needs more levels of classification, and I'm sure I misidentified a couple media, but it's kind of interesting. I through in total throwing-darts guesses at average value for a mainstream tv or newspaper article mention (they range from several minutes on national TV to brief mentions in local papers). Anyway, here's something for us to play with ;)

Am I overlooking the 4-page ABCNews story about it? And the Politico?

Very nice work. Impressive. The other campaigns pay big money to monitor press reports.

Unfortunately the MSM has a very short attention span. They were all ready to cover a launch on Monday.... which never happened. I doubt we will ever hear about the blimp again on the news. Why should they believe any launch time they are told now? This was a missed opportunity. Sure the blimp may still fly, and will be seen by voters, but as a news story its flamed out.

That's just silly. It hasn't even launched yet and it's earned hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of press coverage. You think the media is done reporting on it? Sure. Wait until it's flying over a city causing traffic jams :) You're going to have Paris Hilton and Britney Spears fighting over who gets to ride on the blimp http://www.ronpaulforums.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
:D

Just FYI. A bunch of prior media that wasn't in the newsfeed before for some reason showed up, but please feel free to point out any that's still missing. Especially TV and radio, they don't get tracked through google news... Thanks!
