LOL - now HD can more competitively sell their bikes to a country who's average household income is $290 per month...

If 100cc yammi can ride 5 up, a big ol hawg should get 50+.

Is this even news worthy? Did HD come out with a 100cc econo-model? You're big pimpin' in India if you have a 350 cc Royal Enfield.

Actually, Harley-Davidson doesn't pay India's 100% motorcycle tariff

It's true that there's a country with a 100% tariff on U.S.-made motorcycles. Donald Trump said the tax is unfair to Harley-Davidson in his speech Tuesday night.
But it's not clear that the iconic U.S. company is hurt by that tax.

That's because India is the only country with a 100% tariff on motorcycles, and Harley happens to have its own factory in India. So none of the motorcycles it sells there are considered imports, and thus none are subject to the tax.

Trump vowed to negotiate an end to the tariff. He said when he recently met with Harley-Davidson (HOG) executives at the White House, they told him that tariffs make it difficult to sell in overseas markets, including one country with a 100% tax.

"They weren't even asking for a change," Trump added. "But I am."

Some of the motorcycles Harley assembes in India are made with parts produced in Wisconsin and then shipped to India for final assembly. That's a move typically made manufacturers to avoid paying tariffs.

India is a major market for motorcycles. There were 16.5 million motorcycles and motor scooters sold there last year, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. That's more than 50 times as many motorcycles than were sold in the U.S. last year, and represents 80% of all vehicle sales in India. While Harley-Davidson sells the majority motorcycles in the U.S., it has less than 1% market share in India.

Trump couldn't convince India to not buy S400s from Russia. Question is, will Trump have the balls to sanction India for the S400 purchase? Same thing with buying Iranian oil.

India moves ahead with tariffs on US goods

India is moving forward with plans to hit back at the United States over trade.

The country has proposed hiking tariffs on 30 US products in order to recoup trade penalties worth $241 million, according to a revised World Trade Organization filing.

India said the retaliatory barriers are equal in value to US tariffs on steel and aluminum from India that were imposed by the Trump administration in March.

The new tariffs target products including American almonds, walnuts and apples, as well as some chemical and metal products.

India said its tariff on large American motorcycles, which President Donald Trump has repeatedly spoken out against, will also be hiked.

Are you trying to claim they had no tariffs on any of our products before?
Are you claiming to know that they will only be reducing their tariffs to where they were before?

upper castes buy luxury products in India.

There are low caste folks in IT - folks from family farms who can also afford to buy "luxury products". While it seems that Indians are still very socially/class aware, there are plenty who have penetrated the caste system.

If your point is that there are people who will buy for status, I didnt get the impression that HD was even on the radar... A "motorbike" is a common folk mode of transportation. Folks with money will hire a full time driver, to drive them in their Audi diesel, or Mercedes Benz (fully equipped with crash bumpers and heavy duty nerf bars).

The common folk arent going to be buying HD's any time soon - they'd rather spend a month's salary on a phone or tech gadget, and continue to ride their Yamahas, Heros, and the occasional `Enfield.
