On Friday the State Department announced it is evacuating all non-essential personnel from the US consulate in Basra, Iraq.
The drastic move comes after a month of heavy anti-Iran and anti-Iraqi government protests that have gripped the southern city, which has led to sectarian rioting and the burning of Shia militia buildings, as well as the torching of the Iranian consulate (https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-09-07/protesters-storm-and-torch-iranian-consulate-iraqs-basra-amidst-worsening-sectarian) early this month. During the first week of September (https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-09-06/us-embassy-baghdads-green-zone-under-attack) the US embassy in Baghdad's green zone also came under attack by mortar fire, which US officials and military analysts blamed on Iran-backed militias.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo cited threats from Iran as the reason for ordering the Basra consulate evacuation, and in a separate statement a senior US official confirmed to CNN that the "ordered departure" was due to "security threats from Iran."

"US Embassy Baghdad will continue to provide consular services to US citizens in Basra," the State Department said in its statement referencing the massive and highly fortified US compound in Iraq's capital, which the Basra consul staff will evacuate to. It also issued an updated travel advisory for Iraq noting the removal of non-essential personnel from Basra.
Pompeo explained the evacuation order further as, "Threats to our personnel and facilities in Iraq from the Government of Iran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force, and from militias facilitated by and under the control and direction of the Quds Force leader Qasem Soleimani have increased over the past several weeks."
Pompeo further noted that "there have been repeated incidents of indirect fire from elements of those militias directed at our Consulate General in Basrah and our Embassy in Baghdad, including within the past twenty-four hours."

So when can we expect the bombing of Tehran to commence?

I need to go fill my gas tank.

not even worth the trouble of explaining that it's blowback.
period.
for trying to manipulate and USE
the (valid/authentic) Basra poverty and misery protests...
as cover to mask paid, embedded western hirelings
to attack and burn local PMU and Shia property
and stage a 'Basra hates Iran' event (for the cameras).

A clumsy 'White Helmet' type of production...
trying to sway the ongoing parliamentary alignment in Baghdad...
against Tehran.
It didn't work. Everyone knew what they were doing as they did it.
It's blowback for their attempted and failed, staged field-craft.
Pompeo knows it. It's PAYBACK.
pfffffffft.

yeah. LEAVE!

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Sunday denied that his country was responsible for increased threats against a U.S. consulate in the Iraqi city of Basra.

“We of course have influence in Iraq but that does not mean we control people in Iraq, as the United States doesn’t control people in countries with whom it has good relations,” Zarif said on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS.”
Zarif added that recent warnings issued to the Iranian government by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and White House national security adviser John Bolton were counterproductive.
“Mr. Pompeo and Mr. Bolton, instead of making these irrelevant threats that would produce no positive results, need to look at their own policies,” Zarif said.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi said on Saturday that the consulate closure was “unjustified and unnecessary”, and said Iran condemned any attack on diplomats or diplomatic locations, according to the ministry’s website.
