Soybean growers will get the most relief

(NEWSER) – Starting next week, farmers who have taken a financial hit because of trade disputes between the US and other countries can apply for government assistance. The White House will dole out $4.7 billion in direct aid to help make up for their reduced profits, reports Bloomberg. Most of that, $3.6 billion, is designated for soybean farmers, who have been especially hard hit by penalties imposed by China. As the Wall Street Journal notes, other farming groups aren't thrilled with their totals. The National Corn Growers Association, for instance, says the $96 million earmarked for corn growers won't come close to making up for their financial losses this year, which the group estimates to be around $6 billion. Producers of pork, cotton, sorghum, dairy, and wheat also are in line for money. Farmers can start applying Sept. 4, roughly the start of harvest season.

"Today’s aid announcement gives us some breathing room, but it will keep many of us going only a few months more," says Zippy Duvall, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation. "The real solution to this trade war is to take a tough stance at the negotiating table and quickly find a resolution with our trading partners." In addition to the $4.7 billion, the USDA will spend $1.2 billion to buy commodities such as pork, apples, and nuts to help keep prices stable, reports USA Today. If the trade disputes aren't resolved by December, the USDA says a second round of direct payments will be considered. The Trump administration "will not stand by while farmers are targeted by countries who are acting in bad faith," Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue told reporters. What? Do you mean to say that lowering the standards of living of the American poor and middle class, one of the main results of prtectionist trade policies, doesn't make America great again? Who knew?

Think of it as investment. The central planner wants to create an industry in steel production and at first you have to spend money aka invest in order to make money. Laugh and mock Trump all you want but countries like South Korea and post WWII Japan were developed by central planner who used protectionism to create companies like Samsung, Daewoo, etc.

I just think he should have just used subsides in the first place instead of trying to intimidate other countries. I will be posting #MAGA if this investment start giving good return in 10 years :)

It may even take 100 years, but it will be worth it.

China put large tariffs on soybeans, that's what is hurting these farmers and the Chinese consumers. China needs to end their protectionist policies. The USA is the least protectionist country in the world.

Or maybe China doesn't want to deal in dollar units anymore for our soybeans and "tariffs" are the cover story for the currency usage changes/de-dollarization going on around the world right now. They'll get them from countries that accept yuan units instead.

Either way, just another day in socialist America where we pay to subsidize some corporation. Privatize the gains, socialize the losses.

We should not be giving BigAg more subsidies, any reduced profits they MAY experience due to Trump fighting back in the trade wars are their hazard, the rest of us were never compensated for the losses we incurred from the US government collaborating in the trade wars against us and most of us don't get the kind of subsidies BigAg got before Trump started fighting back.

Divide and conquer'ing the trade battles one at a time could've helped to avoid this step. If Trump gets his resolution with China though, none of this will have mattered, nobody will talk about the subsidies, only the victory.

He could've done it expecting a resolution by mid-terms, who knows what he's thinking.
