MANTECA, Calif. (KCRA) —
A man and a teenager were arrested in connection with the attack of a 71-year-old man who was walking around a Manteca park, police said Wednesday.
Tyrone McAllister, 18, and a 16-year-old boy were taken into custody. Both were arrested on charges of attempted robbery, elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon, according to the police department.
McAllister is the son of Union City Police Chief Darryl McAllister, KCRA confirmed with Manteca police. The family is "devastated" by the incident, and are estranged from Tyrone McAllister, according to the Manteca Police Department.
Investigators said the arrests were a collaborative effort with the police department and the entire community.
“The public’s assistance in providing information with this case was instrumental in identifying the suspects and allowed my investigators to make a quick arrest," investigations supervisor Sgt. Miller said.
Sahib Singh, a Sikh man who doesn't speak English, was walking in Greystone Park at about 6 a.m. Monday when he was confronted by the pair, Manteca police said.
Manteca police released surveillance video from a home that showed the two teens following Singh as he tries to keep walking. In the video, the pair surround the Singh and then one kicks him to the ground, knocking off his turban.
Once Singh gets up, the same attacker kicks him back to the ground. The pair walk away, when the main attacker runs back and again kicks Singh, who is still on the ground, the video shows.
Singh was also spat on and hit his head on the ground, police said. As the pair left the area, it is believed that one of them may have waived a firearm in the air, according to investigators.
