Despite a week of constant criticism by the media, Democrats, and certain members of the Republican party for his meeting with Vladamir Putin in Helsinki, Donald Trump’s approval ratings increased to the highest level of his presidency according to a Wall Street Journal/ NBC poll.

Michael C. Bender writes at the Wall Street Journal:

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump’s approval rating edged higher during a week in which he faced withering criticism following a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, signaling that he is positioned to weather the latest controversy sparked by his unusual brand of politics.

Mr. Trump’s job approval rating rose to 45% in a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, the highest mark of his presidency and up 1 percentage point from June. The survey was taken over a four-day period that started July 15, a day before Mr. Trump’s news conference with Mr. Putin in which he questioned the conclusion of U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia meddled in the 2016 election.

Underpinning Mr. Trump’s job approval was support from 88% of Republican voters. Of the four previous White House occupants, only George W. Bush, in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, had a higher approval rating within his own party at the same point in his presidency.

The survey found Democrats leading by 6 percentage points on the question of which party should control the next Congress, down from a 10-point advantage in June and 7 points in April. Some 49% of voters in the new survey said Democrats should lead the next Congress, while 43% favored the GOP.

I don't know, places like Breitbart will spin anything to sound good for Trump. President approval rating is ok but RCP has dems at a +7.4 currently.

I think Trump picked too many trade fights at once, he should've just done one that he could easily win and then pick another one, racking up wins until the mid-terms. Having multiple on-going trade battles leading to the mid-terms will be bad for him, unless he already knows he will settle before the mid-terms, then claim victory. I guess I sorta like how Trump is unpredictable in that manner.

The left is peaking too early, their voters will be worn out by the time the election takes place because of the constant hysteria since Trump won.

GOP pollster: Negative media coverage making Trump more popular with his base

Republican pollster Jim Hobart said on Monday that negative media coverage of President Trump is only making him more popular with his base.

"I think there's no doubt that when Trump supporters, or even some people that are lukewarm on the president when they feel like he is being unfairly attacked by the media, which I think happens a lot, they rally around him," Hobart, who is a partner at Public Opinion Strategies, told Hill.TV's Joe Concha on "What America's Thinking."

"That's when his numbers, his intensity numbers, get even higher. We saw that in an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released last night," he continued.

"His approval rating, 45 percent, is the highest of his presidency. Eighty-eight percent of Republicans approve of him. Again, the highest of his presidency, and the highest of any president, other than George W. Bush immediately after 9/11," he said.

The NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey marked a 1-point increase in Trump's approval rating since last month.

While Trump's approval rating among Republicans is at a record high, his overall approval rating is still the lowest of any modern president.

As President Trump's approval rating rises (despite the 'resistance' best efforts), Americans are losing support for special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Mueller oversees the investigation (https://www.washingtonpost.com/)into Russia’s efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election, and he also examines whether the Russian government worked with Trump during the election. The special counsel (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-russia-timeline/timeline-of-mueller-probe-of-trump-campaign-and-russia-idUSKBN1HH395) investigation began when President Trump fired former FBI director James Comey.
As Statista's Sarah Feldman notes, (https://www.statista.com/chart/14798/public-support-for-mueller-investigation-waning/) Mueller’s inquiry has been going on for over a year now.

At the start of the investigation, almost three-quarters of Americans believed the Russia investigation should continue. Now, that same support is down to a near even split: 52 support-45 against.
