Maxine Waters warns supporters not to counter-protest armed rallies against her
BY EMILY BIRNBAUM - 07/19/18 09:58 AM EDT

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) on Wednesday urged her supporters not to counter-rally against upcoming armed protests against her.

She said the Oath Keepers, a far-right association associated with militia movements, are planning several weeks of protests against her, which are slated to start on Thursday. The Southern Poverty Law Center has described the group as a "fiercely anti-government, militaristic group" who often stage heavily-armed protests.

Some Waters supporters are reportedly planning counter-protests at the same time and place, but Waters said this would only "exacerbate" the tension.

"I am requesting those individuals and groups planning a counter-protest to not be baited into confronting the Oath Keepers with any demonstrations in opposition," Waters said, according to ABC News. "Such an occurrence would only exacerbate tensions and increase the potential for conflict."

Waters last month drew criticism for her calls to confront Trump administration officials in public, with several conservatives claiming her statement amounted to a call for violence.

"I have no sympathy for these people that are in this administration who know it is wrong, what they're doing, on so many fronts but they tend to not want to confront this president," Waters said at a Los Angeles rally in June.

“For these members of his Cabinet who remain and try to defend him ... The people are going to turn on them; they're going to protest," she added.

Waters later said she was calling for peaceful protest, but the Oath Keepers issued a "call to action" against Waters for her "incitement of terrorism."

"The Oath Keepers would like nothing more than to inflame racial tensions and create an explosive conflict in our community," Waters said.

She said police officers will stay close to her on Thursday "to ensure safety and security."

President Trump has repeatedly slammed Waters, who has long called for his impeachment. He frequently calls her the new leader of the Democratic party and refers to her as a "low-IQ individual."

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A group known as the Oath Keepers is planning a protest Thursday outside the Los Angeles offices of Congresswoman Maxine Waters after comments she made about confronting Trump administration officials.

They say it may go on for weeks. The protest is planned because they said she incited "far-left terrorist violence and threats of violence."

The group calls itself a patriotic organization, who travel the country heavily armed to - in their words - enforce the constitution.

The Southern Poverty Law Center calls them "one of the largest anti-government groups in the U.S. based on conspiracy theories."

Waters, who made comments for people to confront officials with the Trump administration over controversial issues, said she was not calling for anyone to be harmed. But she said groups on the right have made her a target anyways.

Waters issued a statement describing the Oath Keepers as an anti-government militia with a history of violence.

"The Oath Keepers would like nothing more than to inflame racial tensions and create explosive conflict in our community," it said, in part. "In order to ensure the peace and security of our community, it is best and preferable if no other demonstrations are scheduled."

She urged any of her supporters who plan to hold a counter-protest to not get baited into confrontations.

Cliff Smith, who lives in Waters' district and works for a union representing 1,000 roofers in Southern California, said he spoke with her Wednesday night. He said Waters told the union to stay away, but he plans to protest.

Waters said the Los Angeles Police Department will have officers on site.

:questionsmerk: I don't know what happened but the video at this link states that a small group of counter-protestors (who had arrived 2 hours early) had already been threatening violence. Maxine had a bunch of union thugs coming also. Oath keepers never showed up at all? Yet the pro-violence people showed up, so I guess oath keepers kind of made their point.

Oath Keepers militia calls off planned protest outside Maxine Waters' Los Angeles office

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A militia group on Thursday called off a planned protest outside the South Los Angeles office of Rep. Maxine Waters. Supporters of the 43rd District congresswoman had intended to stage a counter-protest despite her warning to "not be baited into confronting the Oath Keepers."

Just after 11 a.m., a small group of pro-Waters demonstrators was gathered on a corner outside her office as a half dozen LAPD officers stood across the street. The police were expected to set up crowd barriers shortly afterward.

According to the Oath Keepers website, members of the militia were scheduled to arrive at the scene at 1 p.m. Shortly beforehand, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson said the agency was notified by the group that its protest was canceled.

"This is both a protest against Maxine Waters' incitement of terrorism, and a stand FOR ICE and the Border Patrol, as they enforce the perfectly constitutional immigration and naturalization laws of this nation," said statement published Tuesday on the website. "We expect this to be an ongoing protest for an indefinite time."

Meanwhile, the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers, and Allied Workers previously said it would lead "a coalition of community organizations" in a counter-protest at the location.

"These organizations are a threat to the community," Cliff Smith, a member of the union and resident of the 43rd District, said in an interview. "They are a threat to the members of my union. They're a threat to democracy in general. They've represented themselves to promote violence and to promote an agenda that is opposed to the interests of my community."

Waters herself released a statement that discouraged her supporters from confronting the militia, which bills itself as a non-partisan association of current and former military personnel, police officer and first responders....

(Extremely dishonest story from LA times, but... )

...But at 1 p.m., police at the protest site said authorities had been in contact with the group, and it had decided not to come in order to ensure peace.
