Trump's first concern ought to be civil liberties in America.

I think that what they really wanted was for Trump to say something offensive in order to display dominance, and if they get too heated they get to retroactively claim that they meant something else entirely and people would believe it because people always don't know what Trump means because he so often contradicts himself in the same sentence or paragraph.

But in this case two double negatives in a sentence , would vs wouldn't, seem to have caused some problems. All this storm over grammar.

It's either to ruin any possible deal or create the narrative that there can't be any deals. Rand Paul talked about this in one of his interviews- there was rumors about Ukraine/Syria exchange between Obama and Putin that never panned out.
