The winding tale of Justice Kennedy and President Trump | Fact Checker

The internet has been abuzz with rumors about the connections between the president and the retiring supreme court justice's son. Here's what you need to know. (Meg Kelly/The Washington Post)

“Just to state this: Justice Kennedy’s son gave a billion dollar loan to Trump when no one would give him a dime, and Justice Kennedy has been ruling in favor of the Trump Administration position for 2 years as the Court decides 5-4 case after 5-4 case.”
— Neera Tanden, president of the Center for American Progress, in a tweet (https://twitter.com/neeratanden/status/1012665534297624577), June 29, 2018

“The circumstances of Justice Kennedy’s resignation must be investigated by the Senate Judiciary Committee before any replacement is considered. The Constitution does not give Trump the power to use underhanded means to induce Supreme Court resignations.”
— Richard W. Painter (Minn.), Democratic primary candidate for U.S. Senate, in a tweet (https://twitter.com/RWPUSA/status/1013113057353125894), June 30, 2018

“Mr. Trump was apparently referring to Justice Kennedy’s son, Justin. The younger Mr. Kennedy spent more than a decade at Deutsche Bank, eventually rising to become the bank’s global head of real estate capital markets, and he worked closely with Mr. Trump when he was a real estate developer, according to two people with knowledge of his role.
“During Mr. Kennedy’s tenure, Deutsche Bank became Mr. Trump’s most important lender, dispensing well over $1 billion in loans to him for the renovation and construction of skyscrapers in New York and Chicago at a time other mainstream banks were wary of doing business with him because of his troubled business history.”
— Reporting by the New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/28/us/politics/trump-anthony-kennedy-retirement.html), June 28, 2018

Justice Anthony M. Kennedy’s decision to retire from the Supreme Court set off a wave of speculation, much of it focused on a past business relationship between Donald Trump and one of Kennedy’s sons.
Tanden’s tweet implies that Kennedy’s independence was compromised because his son Justin had business with Trump while he worked at Deutsche Bank from 1998 to 2009.

Painter’s tweet, which links to a brief article in the New Republic (https://newrepublic.com/minutes/149496/trumps-relationship-justice-kennedy-sounds-shady-new-report) discussing the same Trump connection with Justin Kennedy, implies the president may have used “underhanded means” to get the justice to retire.
Trump’s relationship with Deutsche Bank and Justin Kennedy has been documented over the years in the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and other media. After the justice on June 27 announced his decision to retire, the New York Times renewed that focus.

Did Donald Trump Break Royal Protocol During Visit to Queen Elizabeth II?

After making the Queen wait for around 15 minutes, social media users were also critical of Trump as he was being shown the Guard of Honor by the Queen.
After using her hands to direct him the right way, footage shows Trump turning his back on the Queen, then stopping right in front of her and cutting off her path, awkwardly forcing the 92-year-old to walk around him.
