The fourth-ranking Democrat in the House has lost his bid for another term: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year old activist who ran on abolishing ICE and making Medicare a universal program, defeated Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) in an upset.

Crowley is the first incumbent Democrat to lose renomination since 2014, when a Massachusetts Democrat was brought down by scandal. Crowley, who was first elected in 1998, had grown his profile inside the party and faced no personal controversies.

Could have been Trump supporters helping to get rid of the incumbent. Has there been a demographic shift in this district?

Good riddance.
Shame on Dems that it took them 15 years to vote out a politician who had voted for the biggest blunder in US history (Iraqi Freedom War) even if he was a champion of our closest ally & only non-racist democracy in mideast.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the insurgent firebrand who Tuesday toppled the No. 4 Democrat in the House of Representatives, is a strong critic of Israel who denounced the killings of Palestinian protesters as a “massacre.”

June 26, 2018 By Dave Goldiner

This is a massacre.

I hope my peers have the moral courage to call it such.

No state or entity is absolved of mass shootings of protesters. There is no justification. Palestinian people deserve basic human dignity, as anyone else.

Democrats can’t be silent about this anymore. https://t.co/wJGATOtDsR— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@Ocasio2018) May 14, 2018 (https://twitter.com/Ocasio2018/status/996009689312825344?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)

Ocasio-Cortez, 28, stunned the political world by decisively beating Joe Crowley, a Queens powerbroker who had been mentioned as a possible future candidate for Speaker of the House.
With about 90% of precincts reporting, Ocasio-Cortez was ahead by 58%-to-42%, making Crowley the first incumbent Democrat to lose his seat this year.

“Especially in New York people say this is political suicide,” Ocasio-Cortez told Glenn Greenwald of the Intercept, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuoKLLLpiuE) referring to her criticism of Israel. “But I had a lot of my constituents thanking me for taking that position. I had a lot of Jewish Americans who thanked me.”

Could be partly the anti-establishment wave, which Bernie was nominally part of. This seems analogous to Dave Brat defeating Eric Cantor.

Has that demographic shifted? Is there more of a Hispanic population there now? Sometimes it takes a critical mass for the change to occur. Not everyone votes. A simple population demographic does not exactly parallel the voting demographic.

For instance, in California, a long term Dem incumbent was defeated by another Dem. Mike Honda was a long time Asian (Japanese) American incumbent, that spoke fluent Spanish.

He was defeated by Ro Khana, an Indian American. The campaign was not terribly noteworthy. The only thing that had changed was that the population demographic had changed. There was a huge influx of Indian Americans, and no increase (probably a decrease) of Japanese, Vietnamese and Hispanic Americans in that district.

They like to lump everyone from Hawaii to Afghanistan into the "Asian" catagery. That is worthless, and the establishment may have failed to protect their incumbent based upon that. Demographics are important when it comes to election races.

Heard a commentator today slip in (without commentary) that the District has become heavily Hispanic. They were talking about all of the other reasons she may have won. They ignore the elephant in the room.

This was not a victory for Ocasio-Cortez, except on paper. Crowley has been so focused on climbing the ladder with the DNC that he has neglected his district. Voters pretty much said they would vote for the devil before they would re-elect Crowley. There may well be a Republican representing this district come November.

As mentioned in another other thread, the election was decided by about 27,000 voters. There's probably that many people living on one city block in Queens. Guess the other several hundred thousand didn't feel like walking across the street to vote.

Having said that, it's a safe democrat district. She might not have caused a groundswell uprising, but she's most likely gonna massacre whatever republican sacrificial lamb the GOP throws out on stage to go down in November, just because (D) will show up next to her name on the ballot.

Agree, that letter after their name is almost always the highest priority to voters. A safe District is safe. Funny thing is, in California, the backroom discussions of the GOP are "we have to run a woman against a woman!", usually with regard to the US Senate candidates. While demographics are important, the Party affiliation is more important.

The already-fractured DNC is having an identity crisis. While establishment Democrats Nancy Pelosi (CA) and Chuck Schumer (NY) battle it out (https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-07-02/maxine-waters-turns-schumer-hell-do-anything-protect-his-power) with Maxine Waters (CA) over anti-Trump activism, the party is now mounting support for their new rising star - Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, after the 28-year-old political neophyte unseated the 4th most powerful Democrat in Congress last month in an upset primary win.
Ocasio-Cortez, a dues-paying member (https://www.yahoo.com/news/democratic-socialists-america-show-muscle-new-york-congressional-upset-211526095.html) of Democratic Socialists of America (whose leadership has been openly calling (https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-07-02/democratic-socialists-openly-calling-communism-after-ocasio-cortez-win) for communism) - says that the US should abolish the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE), while also claiming that illegal aliens deserve a "right of passage (https://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/07/02/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-illegal-aliens-deserve-right-of-passage-to-freely-enter-u-s/)" into the United States.
https://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/APTOPIX_New_York_Primary_Ocasio_Cortez_65331%20%28 1%29.jpg
And despite being called out recently for projecting a blue collar "girl from the Bronx" image while growing up in a wealthy enclave (https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-06-29/girl-bronx-ocasio-cortez-called-out-fact-check-actually-grew-wealthy-enclave), Democratic National Committee chairman Tom Perez told progressive radio host Bill Press Tuesday that Ocasio-Cortez represents "the future of our party."

Press: There was a primary in several states. Your home state of Maryland and also up in New York where the 4th most powerful Democrat in the United States, Congressman Joe Crowley was knocked out by a young woman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez*** - 28 years old - never ran for office before - big progressive - calls herself a Democratic socialist, actually like Bernie Sanders did – she was a Bernie Sanders supporter, and in Maryland, Ben Jealous another strong progressive wins the Democratic nomination for governor. What’s this tell you about where the Democratic Party is going today?
Perez: Well, my daughters – I have 3 kids, two of whom are daughters, one just graduated college, one is in college, and they were both texting me about their excitement over Alexandria because, you know, she really represents the future of our party. She ran a spirited campaign.

Ocasio-Cortez Becoming Kingmaker In Primaries... (https://www.thedailybeast.com/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-endorsements-boost-other-left-democratic-candidates/)

In the week since her upset primary win, New York Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (https://www.thedailybeast.com/young-progressive-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-topples-old-boss-joe-crowley-in-democratic-primary-shocker) has turned to elevating and endorsing like-minded contenders around the country.
Cortez’s blessings have proved enormously fruitful so far, especially for insurgent left Democrats facing similarly uphill odds in their primaries against more traditional incumbents.

Drew Serres, Harris’ campaign manager, told The Daily Beast on Tuesday that since the Ocasio-Cortez win they saw a “huge spike in numbers.” In the first month-and-a-half since announcing their campaign, Serres said Harris’ camp had raised only $20,000. And in the five days after Ocasio-Cortez's win, they brought in $15,000 from 429 donors with an average contribution of $35.

A similar situation is unfolding in Massachusetts’ 7th congressional district where Ayanna Pressley, the first woman of color elected to Boston’s city council, is challenging longterm incumbent Rep. Michael Capuano.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the upstart Democratic Socialist who shocked the political world in the June primary when she defeated 10-term incumbent Rep. Joseph Crowley of New York, once advocated for tax cuts when she was running a business of her own, uncovered news reports from 2012 reveal.
Ocasio-Cortez, 28, is a dues-paying member (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-things-to-know_us_5b334b41e4b0cb56051d6081) of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), an organization that calls for the abolishment of capitalism (https://www.dsausa.org/toward_freedom) and argues that “private corporate property is not only wrong, but also nonsensical.” Her campaign platform (https://ocasio2018.com/issues) calls for instituting a single-payer health care system, a federal jobs guarantee and housing as a human right, radical and expensive policies she says will be funded through raising taxes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFYYWcx9rSs) on corporations and high-income Americans.
But Ocasio-Cortez appeared to have a different outlook on capitalism and taxes in 2012 when she was running a business of her own, Brook Avenue Press, an incorporated (https://appext20.dos.ny.gov/corp_public/CORPSEARCH.ENTITY_INFORMATION?p_token=E633F1AC1EA5 064E3E9A797F2547636649B41D2ED3CE0B3B81AF5833FE7C70 C451A41ED5D7903F7D6D2C49BC24DD3E18&p_nameid=13CF2FFE5EDB599A&p_corpid=2C80CAE8652F230F&p_captcha=13292&p_captcha_check=E633F1AC1EA5064E3E9A797F2547636649 B41D2ED3CE0B3B81AF5833FE7C70C4AC27F566FD9913A62F0F DC883D711C54&p_entity_name=brook%20avenue%20press&p_name_type=%25&p_search_type=BEGINS&p_srch_results_page=0) publishing firm for children’s books set in the Bronx. As a business owner, she came out in support of a bill that would provide tax deductions for business start-up costs, arguing that taxes directly impacted her business profits.
“You don’t really make a profit in your first year,” Ocasio-Cortez told the now-defunct DNAinfo (https://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20120821/hunts-point/new-bill-would-double-tax-breaks-for-start-ups/slideshow/233645/#slide-1) when she was 22. “To get taxed on top of that is a real whammy.”
Ocasio-Cortez was then a member of the Sunshine Bronx Business Incubator, a city-sponsored business hub that attracted dozens of entrepreneurs trying to get their businesses off the ground.
“You see a huge return on your investment here,” Ocasio-Cortez told the New York Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/bronx/diverse-group-startups-thriving-city-sponsored-sunshine-bronx-business-incubator-hunts-point-article-1.1115489) of her involvement with the Business Incubator. “People pay $500 an hour for consulting that we get for free by the water cooler.”
During her time in the business world, the self-proclaimed socialist tweeted out multiple articles by Paul Graham, an English-born entrepreneur and venture capitalist.

“Don’t try to construct the future like a building, because your current blueprint is almost certainly mistaken.” http://t.co/llgw7arC

She even gave entrepreneurial talks (https://www.bu.edu/studentactivities/buleads/speakers-2/alexandria-ocasio-cortez/) at Boston University, her alma mater, where she touted her partnership with the Sunshine Bronx Business Incubator designing “entrepreneurial curricula for those interested in launching their own enterprises.” Her primary interests were in “entrepreneurship and developing innovative, healthy, enterprising communities for generations to come,” according to her speaker page on Boston University’s website.

Reports: N.J. Sen. Menendez Linked on Tape to Government Contract Scheme

Published September 28, 2006 Associated Press
In court papers filed in New Jersey in March, Oscar Sandoval said he was pressured in 1999 to hire a doctor Menendez preferred or he would risk losing $1 million in government contracts. Sandoval taped the 20-minute telephone call with Donald Scarinci, a longtime friend of Menendez who is also a powerful lawyer and has been a fundraiser for Menendez's campaign. Scarinci allegedly told Sandoval that Menendez would consider it "a favor" if the doctor, Vicente Ruiz, was hired, adding that Ruiz would offer him "protection." If not, Sandoval would risk losing psychiatric-services contracts at various facilities, including the Hudson County Jail.

If he did not hire Ruiz, Scarinci allegedly said "the law of the jungle" would be put into effect. Sandoval hired Ruiz.

Trump tells prankster posing as liberal Dem Sen. Bob Menendez, 'We're proud of you' and 'Great job' (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?523756-A-comedian-says-he-prank-called-Trump-and-Jared-Kushner-patched-him-through&p=6646636&viewfull=1#post6646636)

Melendez said he then got a call from the president.

"Hi Bob, how are you?" Trump said at the start of the conversation as posted on the podcast. "How are you? Congratulations on everything, we're proud of you. Congratulations, great job. You went through a tough, tough situation and I don’t think a very fair situation, but congratulations."

"Bob, let me just tell you, I want to be able to take care of the situation, every bit as much as anybody else," Trump says. "I think we can do the whole thing. You know, I have a good relationship with the party, you have a good relationship with the party. And I think we can do a real immigration bill."

Not often such candidate reaction to election victory is seen.

Who's going to pay for all that stuff?

China?

We know Mexico will not pay for it.

Take a good look. Unless demographics and immigration are gotten under control, huge swaths of the country is going to be governed by people like her.

This is to a good extent Foreign Policy driven. Many GOP base Christian Evangelicals still not willing to budge on that front.

Sort of like Barack Hussein Obama 2.0 or 3.0 of the future.

I very seriously doubt that.

It's complex interconnected phenomenon but do you think someone who looked like her would be talking about Presidentail aspirations in 2018 (and being taken seriously in media) had Barack Hussein Obama with the help of libs not ridden the GOP base's Iraqi Freedom bloodbath guilt to the White House in 2008?

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the insurgent firebrand who Tuesday toppled the No. 4 Democrat in the House of Representatives, is a strong critic of Israel who denounced the killings of Palestinian protesters as a “massacre.”

It's interconnected development. As long as GOP evangelical base/globalist neoconservatives continue to collaborate to finance/support oppression/occupation of brown Palestinians in mideast, strage political manifestations would continue and someone with brown looks named Al Syrian Hussein Gazan Cortez could possibly become POTUS in years ahead also.

It's impossible to say, but her voters don't care about foreign policy anywhere near as much as they care about brown identity politics, open immigration, and gibs.

Democratic socialist wunderkind Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is worried that her former opponent, Rep. Joe Crowley, the chairman of the House Democratic caucus, isn't going to simply stand back and allow her to unseat him in November.

In a tweet sent Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez warned her followers that Crowley is mounting "a third party challenge against me and the Democratic Party - and against the will of @NYWFP".

.@repjoecrowley (https://twitter.com/repjoecrowley?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) stated on live TV that he would absolutely support my candidacy.

Instead, he’s stood me up for all 3 scheduled concession calls.

Now, he’s mounting a 3rd party challenge against me and the Democratic Party- and against the will of @NYWFP (https://twitter.com/NYWFP?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw).https://t.co/Xvb6Jk8N8q

So much for “Born to Run.”

If you want to see me in Congress, we need your help now more than ever. We cannot underestimate the power of dark money.

— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@Ocasio2018) July 12, 2018 (https://twitter.com/Ocasio2018/status/1017395196420427777?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) That's the New York Working Families Party, an independent party that is influential in New York State politics, where the party has become associated with progressive issues on what was, until Ocasio-Cortez's stunning primary victory, believed to be the far left flank of the Democratic Party (that was before leftists associated with the Democratic Socialists of America started openly endorsing communism (https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-07-02/democratic-socialists-openly-calling-communism-after-ocasio-cortez-win)).
The issue, as is explained in the New York Times article tweeted by Ocasio, is that Crowley won the WFP primary, so his name is expected to appear under their ballot line. Crowley could choose to have his name removed from the WFP line, as is customary in the state when the WFP candidate doesn't match the Democratic candidate. Yet, Crowley has repeatedly declined to remove his name from the ballot line.
He has also, according to Ocasio-Cortez, stood her up for three planned concession calls. This could mean one of two things: Either Crowley has yet to decide whether it'd be worth it to run as an independent against the Democratic Party candidate (just like former Democratic Sen. and VP candidate Joe Lieberman did back in 2006), or he's already mounting a whisper campaign, choosing to sit back and hope that the voters in his district are repulsed enough by Ocasio-Cortez's socialist principles to vote him instead.

Crowley has the DNC's blessing to suppress the socialist uprise. Even the democrats know socialism is their death knell.

How entertaining.
