In what can only be described as "failing up," a colonel who was fired (https://taskandpurpose.com/air-force-lost-grenades-commander-fired/) after his security forces airmen unit lost a machine gun and grenades (https://taskandpurpose.com/airmen-lose-machine-gun-after-losing-grenades/) while guarding nuclear missiles is headed to a new job at Air Force Special Operations Command.
Col. Jason Beers has been assigned as chief of the installations division at AFSOC headquarters, said AFSOC spokeswoman Capt. Amanda Farr. His job will include managing funding for security forces and civil engineers and implanting policy for the installations division.
When asked why Beers is taking on this new post after being relieved of command, Farr replied: "We are fully confident in the colonel's ability to manage our security forces and civil engineer programs for the command."
Task & Purpose was unable to contact Beers for comment by deadline on Friday.

The missing machine gun that triggered the firing of a security forces chief at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, in May turned up in what's probably the last place the Air Force wanted it to: stashed in an airman's home off-base. (https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2018/06/21/youre-not-gonna-believe-where-they-found-that-missing-minot-machine-gun/?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=Socialflow&utm_medium=social)

The question remains: Why did this unnamed airman steal an M240 in the first place? Was he just some dumb kid, bored as hell with his posting at Minot and in search of some recreational fun? Or a budding arms trafficker or killer? It's not clear, but either way, it's not a great look for anyone involved.
