Four days before Richard Nixon resigned in 1974, the Justice Department told the 37th president that he couldn’t pardon himself. Three days ago, President Donald Trump tweeted that he knows better.

Because it has the power to impeach the president, Congress might be the final backstop if Trump did pardon himself ― the U.S. Constitution says the president has full power to pardon “except in cases of impeachment.”

So after Trump’s tweet, HuffPost attempted to get comment from the offices of all 235 Republicans in the House, where the impeachment process would start. We asked a simple question: If the president pardoned himself, would they support impeachment?

We didn’t get many yes or no responses to our survey question ― just three, in fact ― so we sought out Republicans in hallways and asked them the question directly. Still, only one Republican said definitively he would support impeachment if the president pardoned himself: the libertarian-minded Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan.

Setting aside the fact that there should be no reason to pardon anyone in this case (no one is accusing them of ballot-fixing or election fraud - only "influencing" people. Influencing someone can never be a crime), it is never a good precedent to allow a President to pardon himself for ANY reason. I support Amash on that one!

The only possible reason to raise the issue at all is to play into the Trump derangement syndrome of leftists.

The "pardon himself" bit was a correct legal argument in a response to Mueller's unreasonable fishing demands... and it was unlawfully leaked to the press specifically so they could create a fake commotion and get people lathered up over it, the same exact thing they've been doing 24/7 for years now.

Not clear and this is just speculation but one possible reason could be the Jarvanka factor as Amash is said to have Palestinian heritage?

Ya know.. that's not a ground breaking thought. Years/decades ago, if I remember correctly, Edwin Edwards pardoned himself when he got indicted on racketeering charges - which was my intro to Louisiana politics
it was shocking, almost to the point of comical, when you look at a kid that was raised in the conservative party of NY.. parents both holding office within the party.

I just gotta wonder why anyone here bothers to have any issues discussion at all when so few have any real desire to seek truth.

That someone would seriously assert that Trump was a bigger supporter of the Democratic Party than Soros is beyond obscene. Who was supposed to be stupid enough to believe that? And what exactly is the point of constructing such an outrageous falsehood, and then wrecking the poster's own reputation by posting it non-ironically?
