Haspel Likely To Be Confirmed After Telling Them What They Wanted To Hear Repudiating C.I.A. Torture

Gina Haspel, President Trump’s nominee to lead the C.I.A., appeared on Tuesday likely to be confirmed after she declared that the agency should not have undertaken its interrogation program in which Qaeda detainees were tortured after the Sept. 11 attacks — a condemnation she refused to make at her confirmation hearing last week. In a letter (https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/4462947/Haspel-letter-to-Warner.pdf) to the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, Ms. Haspel said one of the “hard lessons since 9/11” was the costs of the agency’s use of torture, which she called “enhanced interrogation.”

“While I won’t condemn those that made these hard calls, and I have noted the valuable intelligence collected, the program ultimately did damage to our officers and our standing in the world,” she wrote. “With the benefit of hindsight and my experience as a senior agency leader, the enhanced interrogation program is not one the C.I.A. should have undertaken. The United States must be an example to the rest of the world, and I support that.”

After receiving the letter, Mr. Warner announced on Tuesday afternoon that he would support her confirmation. Minutes later, another Democrat, Senator Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, said she, too, would vote for Ms. Haspel.

I predicted about a week ago that if Haspel doesn't need Rand's vote she most likely won't get it. So her having the votes in a perverse way is a good thing.

That isn't really a great prediction though. One didn't have anything to do with the other. Can you name a vote where Rand's vote was needed and he had a huge compromise? The only one can think of is maybe voting for skinny repeal on Obamacare. But I don't see that as a compromise.

I missed the interview, but judging by the headlines, he's still a Nay at the moment.

Rand says Assad most likely gassed his people. Hmmm. I'd like to see him debate Ron Paul on this issue.

Yeah. I don't think Rand cares so much who gassed them, as the plain fact we have no reason to stay. Maybe I don't understand him, but he seems like the kind of guy who will throw opposition a bone on particulars he deems unessential, in order to lull them into agreement or appear like a team player.

GOP Sen. Jeff Flake (http://thehill.com/people/jeff-flake) (Ariz.) announced Wednesday he will oppose the nomination of Gina Haspel, President Trump (http://thehill.com/people/donald-trump)'s pick to lead the CIA, citing her ties to the controversial "enhanced interrogation" program used during the George W. Bush administration.
"Congress needs to be able to provide fully informed oversight. My questions about Ms. Haspel's role in the destruction of videotapes relevant to discussions occurring in Congress regarding the program have not been adequately answered," Flake said in a statement.

I felt that way initially, but that means he's lying. I don't know why he'd needlessly lie instead of just rephrasing his point.

The CIA has a new boss, and for the first time, it's a woman.

On Thursday afternoon, despite vocal opposition from many senators over her involvement in the Bush-era "enhanced interrogation", i.e. torture, programs, the Senate confirmed Gina Haspel in a 54-45 vote as the next head of the CIA.
In the end, support from Senate Democrats, including the Senate Intelligence Committee's vice chair Mark Warner, helped ensure Haspel's confirmation. She was previously approved by the Senate Intelligence Committee in a 10-5 vote early Wednesday in a closed-door session, paving the way for her confirmation.
While close, this was not the narrowest of Trump nominee confirmations, with Betsy De Vos, Jeff Sessions and Scott Pruit all confirmed with a narrower margin.
Haspel's 54-45 confirmation vote not the narrowest of Trump nominees: BetsyDeVosED was confirmed 51-50, with @VP casting tie-breaking vote. Other narrow confirmation votes: -AG Sessions: 52-47 -@EPAScottPruitt 52-46 “Throughout the process, she demonstrated candor, integrity and a forthright approach to the committee's questions. She displayed the talent and expertise that make her uniquely qualified to face America’s biggest national security challenges, whether in the area of counterterrorism or renewed international competition among great powers,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said ahead of Thursday's vote.
Many disagreed: Republican Senators Rand Paul (Ky.) and Jeff Flake (Ariz.) sided with most Democrats in voting against Trump's controversial pick to replace Mike Pompeo. Sen. John McCain also opposed her nomination but was in Arizona battling brain cancer. Meanwhile, several Democrats including Sen. Mark Warner (Va.), the vice chairman of the Intelligence Committee, and red-state Democratic Sens. Joe Donnelly (Ind.), Joe Manchin (W.Va.) and Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.) supported the nominee.

It's a real picture but I don't know if it's Gina Haspel.

The picture has been around for a while, or looks strikingly close to another (the pose, lady and the dead man).

I remember the day the abu gravey news broke. Of all the freak shit to come out of Desert Land, that one struck me the most surreal for some reason.

If I was humiliated like that, I'd swear revenge if it took me my whole life. (If I survived.)
