MEFALSIM, Israel — As Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump watch the plaque being unveiled at the new embassy in Jerusalem (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/new-us-embassy-in-jerusalem-a-stone-plaque-and-400k-in-renovations-for-now/2018/05/07/0b01d0be-520f-11e8-a6d4-ca1d035642ce_story.html?utm_term=.1f2513c37dd5)on Monday, 50 miles away the Israeli army will be readying for its nightmare scenario: thousands of Palestinians bursting through the fence with Gaza.
Demonstrations are planned across the Palestinian territories to protest the U.S. decision to shift its embassy (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trumps-decision-to-open-jerusalem-embassy-complicates-promise-to-seek-peace-in-the-region/2018/05/12/86113024-5557-11e8-9c91-7dab596e8252_story.html?utm_term=.6a5ad010cddb) from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and recognize the city as Israel’s capital, seen as a major blow to the Palestinian cause.
But they are expected to be largest in Gaza, where six weeks of demonstrations dubbed the “March of Return” will reach a climax this week. Israeli snipers have already killed at least 49 Palestinians in the unrest at the fence, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, and shot 2,240 more.

The embassy move has added extra friction to what was already a highly charged week. Scuffles broke out in Jerusalem’s Old City on Sunday as Israelis celebrated the “reunification” of the city, an annexation not recognized internationally. The opening of the embassy on Monday is followed by Nakba Day — when Palestinians mark the anniversary of mass expulsions and flight that displaced an estimated 700,000 people when Israel was founded 70 years ago.
This year, organizers of demonstrations in Gaza and the West Bank are spreading them over two days to coincide with the embassy opening.

The Israeli military says it will deploy two additional battalions of soldiers on the edges of the barricaded strip, roughly doubling the number of forces. A second and third defense line of troops will be set up and reservists have been called in. Another extra battalion will be deployed in the occupied West Bank.
In Jerusalem, protests are planned at the same time as the embassy opening, with one in an Arab neighborhood just a few blocks away. More than 1,000 police officers are working with the U.S. Embassy to coordinate security for Monday’s event, a police spokesman said.

“This one-sided move strengthens Israel’s occupation and takes us further from peace,” said Ayman Odeh, leader of the Arab faction in Israel’s parliament.
Hamas has thrown its weight behind the demonstrations in Gaza, which have deflected Palestinians’ frustration with their leadership as residents of the blockaded 140-square-mile territory struggle to make ends meet.

A former Christian chaplain in the U.S. Air Force claims that he faced discrimination after converting to Orthodox Judaism, Air Force Times reported (https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2018/05/08/air-force-chaplain-allegedly-denied-new-position-after-converting-to-judaism/) Tuesday.
Capt. Jeff Montanari, who was ordained by the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, was assigned in 2010 to the March Air Reserve Base in California, where he was dedicated to serving the Jewish community, according to First Liberty Institute, the law firm dedicated to defending religious freedom that is representing him. He provided the base’s first Seder for Passover and helped Jewish men and women with their kosher dietary requests, in addition to making other religious accommodations.
Montanari was moved by his experience, and after discovering his own Jewish lineage, Montanari looked into converting to Orthodox Judaism. That was when he says his superiors began demeaning his character, refusing to make religious accommodations, isolating him from the rest of the chaplain staff and excluding him from meetings. One chaplain allegedly told Montanari that he could no longer work with him because of his change in religious beliefs, according to a letter sent by First Liberty.
Montanari was eventually driven out of the Air Force in 2015, his lawyers said.

For Joe Lieberman, the former US senator from Connecticut who in 2000 was a few votes in Florida away from becoming the first Jewish US vice president, Monday’s move of the US Embassy to Jerusalem is personal: He was one of the most active sponsors of the 1995 Jerusalem Embassy Act, which mandated the long-delayed move.

ZEITOUN, Gaza Strip — Israeli soldiers on Monday killed 37 Palestinians demonstrating along the border fence and wounded more than 1,600 in the bloodiest day in Gaza since the 2014 war with Israel, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
Thousands of Palestinians gathered on the edges of Gaza as the U.S. embassy opened in Jerusalem, fanning out along the fence in what appeared to be some of the largest demonstrations yet.

Hamas plans to continue protests along the Gaza border and hopes to see a mass demonstration on June 5 which will rival the size of this week’s protests, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, called the move “the beginning of something extraordinary” and said he hoped other countries would soon follow the US by bringing their embassies to Jerusalem.
As Israel and Hamas continued to fight a battle of of narratives over the killings, Hamas refused to accept a medical shipment from the Israeli military, despite a severe shortage of hospital supplies with which to treat the wounded.
Mr Qasem dismissed Israel’s decision to send the aid as a propaganda stunt. “The occupation is trying to show that it has a human face, which is wrong. These trucks carrying these medical supplies are covered with Palestinian blood,” he said.

Israel said the Hamas refusal was proof that it did not care about the residents of Gaza. Several other aid shipments from the UN and the Palestinian Authority were allowed in.

In one of this already absurd campaign’s more novelistic ironies, Kushner’s dirty dealings caught the attention of a young, ambitious federal prosecutor named Chris Christie, who opened up an investigation that called Kushner’s sister, Esther, and brother-in-law, Billy, as witnesses. Determined to prevent Billy from testifying, Charles set up a honey trap (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/19/nyregion/major-donor-admits-hiring-prostitute-to-smear-witness.html?_r=0) for his brother-in-law in a motel room—fully equipped with video cameras—and paid a prostitute $10,000. Israeli Soldier Gets One-Month Sentence Over Killing of Gaza Teenager

It was the first conviction of a soldier in connection with the shootings of Palestinians during mass protests along the border.

JERUSALEM — An Israeli soldier who shot and killed a plainly unarmed Palestinian boy during mass protests along the Gaza border fence (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/07/world/middleeast/gaza-protests-israel.html?module=inline) last year has been sentenced to a month in military prison and demoted.
It was the first conviction of a soldier to result from a handful of criminal investigations that were opened after hundreds of Palestinians were killed during the protests, which began in March 2018 and continue, albeit in reduced form.
The boy who was killed, Othman Helles, 14, was gunned down on July 13, 2018, just as he began to climb the border fence directly opposite an Israeli sniper position. The scene was captured on video (https://twitter.com/_Ysharaf/status/1017874835152752641) and was the subject of a BBC News Arabic documentary (https://youtu.be/rsylvwdcy_4).
The Israeli soldier, who was not identified, agreed on Monday to a plea bargain in which he was convicted of “disobeying an order leading to a threat to life or health.”
