View Full Version : A soldier just got authorization to wear a beard because of his Norse pagan faith

They didn't have this choice back in my day when I was 18, in the Navy, and a Norse pagan.

When the Army authorized beards for religious soldiers in early 2017, the move was a response to years of requests — and a lawsuit — from Sikh soldiers seeking to both serve and adhere to the tenets of their faith.

But the directive, technically, applied to all religions.

And that includes Norse pagans, also known as heathens, according to an undated memo from the 14th Military Police Brigade at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

“I grant your accommodation, subject to the standards and limitations described below,” commander Col. Curtis Shroeder wrote to a 795th Military Police Battalion soldier, whose name is redacted from a copy of the memo circulating on Facebook.

“In observance of your Heathen; Norse Pagan faith, you may wear a beard, in accordance with Army uniform and grooming standards for soldiers with approved religious accommodations.”

Hell, you can even get a Thor's hammer on your gravemarker...

Military rules should be based on practical concerns, joining the military isn't a right and there are reasons for the beard ban.

Are heathens cultural Americans?
It depends on other factors but they are less so than others because America was and is a Christian nation.

The reason for the beard ban was to have a uniform appearance. Much of it centered on the Vietnam war and the fact that sailors grooming standards were, by tradition, lax, by common standards. I don't know if you have served but I was in the Navy when the "beard ban" came into effect. It started two years before I joined. CNO Hayward directed that no one under the rank of PO3 could wear one. The razor fell one year after my enlistment under CNO Watkins in '84. No more beards. I witnessed guys with 18 yrs. service, 2 to retirement, say "fuck you" and leave. The myth about gas mask seals were bullshit. If anyone was gonna die in the fleet it would be by nuclear evaporation.

I will defer to your knowledge on the subject.

If pagans had more sway, we could have long ago eliminated the Injun menace.

My brother was in the navy during 'nam... I seem to recall they let him grow a beard.

Yeah, beard ban didn't come in until the early '80s.
