'Here's my number': Fresno State professor's post floods Arizona State crisis line with calls

Rachel Leingang, The Republic | azcentral.com April 19, 2018

Arizona State University's phone number for students in crisis has received a massive number of calls in the past two days after a California professor ranted against Barbara Bush and posted the crisis hotline as her personal number.

Randa Jarrar, an English professor at California State University-Fresno, called Bush, who died on Tuesday, an "amazing racist" who "raised a war criminal," a reference to former President George W. Bush, in a Twitter post.

She later said she was "happy the witch is dead" and couldn't wait for the rest of the Bush family to meet their demise.

Jarrar's account is now private, but the Fresno Bee and various other media outlets published screenshots of her posts on Twitter.

The initial posting inspired thousands of responses, with people mentioning her employment at Fresno State and her supervisors. Jarrar encouraged those who were upset to contact the university, saying she would "never be fired" because she's a tenured professor.

Fresno State said Jarrar has been on leave this semester.
'If you really wanna reach me ... '

After someone on Twitter posted her email and phone number at Fresno State, Jarrar responded that she hadn't activated her work number.

"If you really wanna reach me, here's my number ok?" Jarrar posted, listing the number for the ASU crisis line.

The 24-hour ASU crisis line, run by a company called Empact, was subsequently inundated with phone calls.

The hotline typically receives about 5 calls per week, according to ASU.

On Wednesday afternoon, about a day after Jarrar's post, the line was still getting 50 to 70 calls per hour, ASU said.

ASU said the professor does not have any apparent affiliation with the university.

The school said it doesn't believe any people who needed the phone service were affected.

Eugene Gu, a doctor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, tweeted to Jarrar after she posted the crisis number, telling her to stop.

"Your freedom of speech does not entitle you to have all these people spam an actual mental health crisis line," Gu tweeted.
Comments on Bush cause stir

A California English professor has caused social media controversy over her tweets following the death of former First Lady Barbara Bush. The teacher at Fresno State referred to the former first lady as a "amazing racist." Buzz60

Jarrar did not return requests for comment. Her personal website says she doesn't read or respond to messages about Barbara Bush.

Fresno State President Joseph Castro said in a statement that Jarrar made her comments about Bush as a private citizen, not a representative of the university.

“Professor Jarrar’s expressed personal views and commentary are obviously contrary to the core values of our university, which include respect and empathy for individuals with divergent points of view, and a sincere commitment to mutual understanding and respect,” Castro said.

Information on ASU's counseling services and the numbers to call if you're in crisis can be found here.

Fresno State professor under fire for celebrating death of Barbara Bush

Fresno State University is distancing the school from a professor who celebrated the death of former first lady Barbara Bush as it reviews the matter, officials said Wednesday.

“Randa Jarrar, a Fresno State English professor, made deeply disrespectful statements on her personal Twitter account,” Lynnette Zelezny, vice president of academic affairs at Fresno State, told reporters at a press briefing. “Understandably, many people are very concerned and upset about the nature of Professor Jarrar’s personal comments. Please know the university is taking this matter very seriously and the incident is under review.”

Zelezny declined to say whether the school intends to fire Jarrar.

“The university is a public institution and must follow certain specific procedures in addressing personnel matters,” she said.

According to Zelezny, Jarrar had taken a personal leave of absence and was not teaching classes this semester. Jarrar did not immediately return a request for comment.

On Tuesday night after news of Bush’s passing broke, Jarrar took to Twitter, apparently angry about the outpouring of tributes to the former first lady.

“Barbara Bush was a generous and smart and amazing racist who, along with her husband, raised a war criminal,” Jarrar tweeted. “F*** outta here with your nice words,” she wrote.

“I’m happy the witch is dead,” Jarrar continued. “Can’t wait for the rest of her family to fall to their demise the way 1.5 million iraqis have.”

She added: “All the hate I’m getting ALMOST made me forget how happy I am that George W. Bush is probably really sad right now.”

Jarrar’s Twitter account was later set to private. But her tweets, captured in screengrabs, continued to fuel outrage.

In response to one critic who warned that her tweets could lead to her losing work, Jarrar bragged: “I work as a tenured professor. I make 100K a year doing that. I will never be fired.”

Fresno State President Joseph Castro issued a statement late Tuesday condemning Jarrar’s comments, emphasizing that they were “made as a private citizen, not as a representative of Fresno State.”

Castro added: “Professor Jarrar’s expressed personal views and commentary are obviously contrary to the core values of our university, which include respect and empathy for individuals with divergent points of view, and a sincere commitment to mutual understanding and progress.”

According to her biography on the school’s website, Jarrar is an Arab-American who grew up in Kuwait and Egypt, and moved to the U.S. after the Gulf War. She was hired by Fresno State in 2010.

Her Twitter bio now includes a link to an Inside Higher Education article that argues “academic freedom means that both faculty members and students can engage in intellectual debate without fear of censorship or retaliation.”

Also of note, Nancy Reagan hated Barbara Bush. I didn't realize there was a whole backstory about Reagan not liking Bush and barely endorsing him. Reagan basically OK'd a primary challenge from Buchanan.

Fresno State’s Randa Jarrar: I Hate the White Patriarchy but I Still Suck White Dick

Embattled Fresno State Professor Randa Jarrar has a history of unusual remarks predating her recent outburst following the death of Barbara Bush.

Fresno State Professor Randa Jarrar came under fire this week after she celebrated the death of former First Lady Barbara Bush on Twitter.

“Barbara Bush was a generous and smart and amazing racist who, along with her husband, raised a war criminal. Fuckk outta here with your nice words,” Jarrar tweeted earlier this week. In a separate tweet, Jarrar said that the news made her “happy” because Barbara Bush’s death likely made George W. Bush upset. Additionally, Jarrar may have clogged a mental health crisis hotline when she jokingly tweeted the hotline’s number out to her critics, pretending that it was her personal number.

Now, videos of Jarrar are surfacing, revealing a history of bizarre remarks.

During a book talk event with two other authors, Jarrar highlighted one of her personal inner conflicts. Apparently, Jarrar has a hard time reconciling her hatred for the “white heteropatriarchy” with her desire to engage in oral sex with white men.

“I had my kid when I was 18. I never thought in a million years that I’d be a shitty parent. But sometimes I’m a fucking shitty parent,” Jarrar said. “And sometimes I’m a fucking awesome parent. And sometimes I just say that ‘I can’t fucking stand the white heteropatriachy,’ and then sometimes I’m sucking a white dick.”

Have not watched the video. But free speech right comes with responsibilitiy and even if this Prof had concerns about civil rights of Iraqi civilians, children, women, both timing and method are unfortunate and quite controversial. If I'm not mistaken, BB had opposed pre war lies and war violence that led to harm to Iraqi children & civilians. She was not a racist.

It is aso well documented that one of her sons formed human rights chain with civil rights icon/MLK Lt. Rep John Lewis and Obama in Selma.

Could the Prof be confusing her with this other democratic icon?

Tenure, 100k salary with perks, and the ability to say things that would have seen her beheaded or stoned to death in her Country of origin. That might have had some bearing on her choice.

Looks like it was tweets and not video.

Free Speech rights come with responsibilities, these tweets certainly cross the line at multiple levels regardless of her view on Iraqi civilians civil rights and Iraq war violence justification:

And this is not right time for this but Iraq war deaths numbers cited in the tweet don't match IBC count:

I'd like to archive an epitaph to this thread.

as a footnote:
I currently live literally 2 football fields away from the 'official' Alister Crowley temple and library run by his grandson Mark.
Well.. I did....
That was until this past summer when I literally watched it burn on a very windy night around 9:30pm from my home.
It was spectacular. I mean it. It sat perched on a hillside with a winding single lane driveway to the top.
Flames were 40-50 feet in the air and fire trucks were lined up along the bottom watching it burn.
We ended up with Mark Crowley's 2 daughters staying at our house for several weeks. The family lived at the temple/library.
I took them to school... we had 1 of their dogs for about a week. (didn't make it... smoke inhalation/lung damage.)
Yes. Mark is a devotee (the temple was a moneymaker 4 him). Yes. His wife is a practicing Satanist.
Yes. His daughters 9 and 10 are sweet children.
Enuff of that.

Here's a little background on Mark's 'aunt Barbara' (?).
