polygamy is the norm in some cultures

As long as there are no minors involved, I could care less about polygamy.

Christianity teaches against it, but I have no objection to legalizing polygamy. People should be free to associate however they wish.

Post proof.
The only reference I have seen is that "Bishops be the husband of one wife."
That was for a leader, and that his attention could be devoted to the flock.

I have never understood the persecution of polygamy. This again, is a Freedom issue and between an Individual and his Creator.

legal contracts are ok to me

As long as they don't do it in the streets and frighten the horses.

(Anti-polygamy laws are right up there with sumptuary laws and the old "blue laws" in relevance to today's society - that is to say, they have none.)

if the Mormons encouraged multiple husbands, I might convert. ;)

I hope you're joking. The only reason Christians are monogamous are because the Romans were.

Just curious to hear your take on this. Why are Christians so opposed?

I wouldn't mind having a few wives, provided they were mellow and didn't distract from video game playing or feeding my internet addiction.

the problem is that, unless you are very rich and good looking, you probably wouldn't have many wives. in fact, you would probably have none (and also no sex, because all women would be married to rich, good looking men). only in monogamy every man gets a wife/sex. so though it is presented as a moral choice, it is more of a practical concern.

I'll have to give Mormons some credit. I could barely live with one wife yelling at me and complaining, 3+ wives? No way!

The laughable thing about this whole "Mormons are polygamists" meme is that the practice has always been controversial in the church even in its heyday, and was officially outlawed in the COJCOLDS 107 years ago. Slamming the Mormons for polygamy today is like holding mainstream Christianity responsible for the occasional Pentecostal in West Virginia being bitten by a snake in church.

3 wives could be more bearable than one wife because they would all be competing for your affection. If complaining was something that didn't appeal to you then it would have to be reduced if they wanted to spend time with you. If you had the option of being with one wife over the other, you would certainly pick the wife who complained the least.

Yeah. What you said ;)

(And getting sent to the store 3 times as much to pick up a box of Tampax? 3 out-of-sync PMS events over a month? Noooope - not the kid ...)

Mark Twain said that he considered Mormon men to be devils, until he got to Utah and saw the women and then he said they were saints.

As has been said polygamy has been against church doctrine and grounds for excommunication for over 100 years.

Please. Just use an internet grocer to deliver the tampax regularly and dole it out. PMS? Just create a private portion of the compound.

You got me there - I never think ahead ;)

(And I think I'll just put in my own personal bunker right over there, on that secluded side of the compound. Stock it with a big screen, plenty of Fritos and brewskis, and a good deadbolt lock on the door ...)

You're advocating sexual socialism, if you ask me. It's like allocating one wife/husband per person, and it's not like the state has ever really prevented people from having gotten involved with more than one person.

I'm no ladies man, but I think I'd rather take my chances with the free-market system. It's fine if a football player has 10 wives and I have nothing. That kind of isolationism would allow me to reallocate my time into improving myself.

As it stands, I think US sexual culture makes us all stupid and distracted. Polygamy practiced by a few rich people could make the market better and add more incentives for innovation/personal improvement.

i am not advocating anything - i am just explaining it. i am fine with poligamy.

+1.

Government should not interfere with an individual's life. S/he should be allowed to do whatever they want to - provided an individual doesn't force his/her behavior upon another person.

Polygamy [any form - Polyandry (1 wife, many husbands), Polygyny (1 husband, many wives)] isn't the problem. The issue comes when young girls, boys or adults are forced against their will to join in this activity.

Gay marriage, religion, travel, drugs, etc. What right does the government have to impose it's will upon the individual?

Also, if women live within the same household and not in seperate homes they have a tendency to cycle together. In other words, all your wives are "on" at the same time.
Ultimately, I dont look at this a a Mormon issue. It is a freedom issue. There are several states that want to defone relationship as being between one man and one women. THis outlaws homosexual unions and multiple marriages. I was a student pastor until I was 20 and have never found anything that wasnt taken out of context that made multiple marriage against Christianity.
Personally, I have a friend who's wife is bi-sexual. She fell in love with another women but would not leave her husband. She talked to him about her and he became very upset but because he loved her, he went ahead and met her. After nearly two years of them hanging out together, the husband had developed a close relationship with the second women. They eventually had a ceremony and currently live in "marriage" type of relationship. They have been together now for nearly 10 years. I thought it was weird at first but I began to apply some f my more Libertarian principles to it and realized that no person is being harmed, all people are in the relationship voluntarily and therefore the state should have no role in the matter. Alas, they asked for a marriage license and were told that they would have to get a divorce so that he could get married to his second wife.

Kinda dumb in my opinion.

I think you mean apologize to? Yes?

Everyone should watch HBO's series, Big Love. It's out on DVD if you want to rent it on Netflix. It's awesome.

Watch out, there are crazy Mormons like myself among the Paulites.

Really, if you'd like to bash Mitt, be my guest, but you guys are seemingly uninformed about my religion, or bad comedians??? I'd be happy to provide resources for you. Start at LDS.org.

On a side note, it is true that we have horns... we burn them off at birth like they do with goats.
