Portion:

DEE MARGO: El Paso is one region of three states and two countries and a population of 2.7 million. But we've been involved with Mexico for over 400 years. So we're pretty close and proximate here. We haven't had - we're considered the safest city in the United States. We don't have any real issues. And we already have a fence that was established under the Bush administration that runs through our city, so...

GREENE: So you don't really need this.

MARGO: Well, from our standpoint, from a public safety standpoint, we're in good shape.

GREENE: Then what do you make of the president doing this? I mean, a lot of his supporters are very excited. He's talking about this as a real tough move to strengthen the border. You seem to suggest this is sort of business as usual, and it's not as significant as it might sound.

MARGO: Well, from our standpoint and from my observation in our region, there are not any real issues that are driving this. What I sense is driving this is that caravan of Central Americans going through Mexico, and Mexico has not stopped them, and as they approach the U.S. border, that's a problem. They're kind of tweaking him, I guess.

MARGO: What I would love to see is a better understanding of what truly goes on on the border. When I hear even in East Texas and things where there are - you know, there are some folks who are quite xenophobic. They don't understand what's going on. We understand. Come down here and understand. Now, there are pockets where you have issues. But our issues are not significant related to drug trade or otherwise. There are still issues related to human trafficking that most people know on a national and an international basis. But for the most part, as I say, we're the safest city in the United States.

Safest city ? Last time I looked , lower than the bottom third . A lot of property crime and violent crime . Not as bad as a larger city like Indianapolis , but getting there .

#2 on this list for large cities (over 300k population based on violent crime and property crime FBI statistics): https://www.safewise.com/blog/safest-metro-cities/

Wallethub uses a larger list and ranks El Paso at #38 out of 182. https://wallethub.com/edu/safest-cities-in-america/41926/

El Paso already has a great magnificent BORDER WALL. He's not sending the national guard to El Paso so everything this Mayor says is worthless. Your posts past couple days have been complete garbage.

And crime abated with the reduced human traffic from Juarez, considered one of the most dangerous places in the world due to drug-cartel violence, helping El Paso become one of the safest large cities in America.

Before 2010, federal data show the border city was mired in violent crime and drug smuggling, thanks in large part to illicit activities spilling over from the Mexican side. Once the fence went up, however, things changed almost overnight. El Paso since then has consistently topped rankings for cities of 500,000 residents or more with low crime rates, based on FBI-collected statistics. The turnaround even caught the attention of former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and other Obama administration officials, who touted it as one of the nation’s safest cities while citing the beefed-up border security there.

Trump hasn't said exactly where the agents will be sent other than "to the border". Maybe he even meant the one next to Canada? (Yeah- right!)

El Paso's border fence started construction in 2008. Their crime rate was already below the Texas state and the US crime rates.

That ranking doesn't make much sense according to their statistics. https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/tx/el-paso/crime

Violent Crime- their rating is 3.99 per 100k residents. Texas- 4.34 and US median 4. That puts them slightly below average (lower than average crime).

"My chances of being a victim of violent crime in Texas: 1 in 230. El Paso: 1: 250" (less likely)

Property Crime- 18.77 per 100k residents. Texas- 27.6 and US median 25- they are well below average on that.

"My chances of being a victim of property crime in Texas: 1 in 36 In El Paso: 1 in 52"

Where they do move down on their list is crimes per square mile- and that is due to higher density- not higher crime rates. Per capita they are below average.

When I spent time there it seemed like the bottom third . Must be the density . All the criminals packed up on top of one another. Cities suck so sprawled out must be better .

Overall , I would guess the mayor is right . National Guard not needed there . Probably are places though border patrol could use help .

The guard can't do much legally. They can't arrest or stop anyone. They are allowed to do surveillance and paperwork. Bush spent $1 billion having them do just that.

Considering half that job is just human trafficking surveillance and a national guard private probably makes a lot less than border patrol it might be a win .

San Diego has lowest big city murder rate in US, FBI stats show

SAN DIEGO — San Diego was the safest big city in the United States last year in terms of murders, while the San Diego-Carlsbad metro area had fewer violent crimes in 2016 than all but three of the 20 largest metropolitan areas in the country, according to statistics released Monday by the FBI.

Across the country, the violent crime rate rose again for the second consecutive year to 386.3 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in 2016, according to the FBI. That marks the highest the crime rate has been since 2012.

Meanwhile, the country’s murder rate rose to 5.3 per 100,000 residents, marking the second straight year the murder rate has risen following nine years of decreases. The 5.3 murder rate is the highest since 2008, when it was 5.4, but remains well below the 20-year high of 6.8 in 1997.

In the city of San Diego, there were 50 murders last year among the city’s more than 1.4 million residents, equating to a rate of 3.5 murders per 100,000 residents. In San Diego County, with a population of more than 3.3 million, there were 101 murders resulting in three murders per 100,000 residents.

As for violent crime, the San Diego-Carlsbad metro area, which includes all of San Diego County, was one of the safest large metro areas in the country with 330.4 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. The safest metro areas in the country were San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara at 280.1; Minneapolis-St. Paul- Bloomington at 287.7; and Washington D.C.-Arlington-Alexandria at 301.3.

Within San Diego County, there were 32.8 rapes per 100,000 residents last year, 83.7 robberies, 210.8 aggravated assaults, 1,850.1 property crimes, 313.2 burglaries, 1,204.5 thefts or larcenies and 332.4 vehicle thefts.

In terms of murders in the 10 largest U.S. municipalities, only New York City came close to matching the safety of San Diego, with a 3.9 murder rate. San Jose was next at 4.5.

The city of Los Angeles’ murder rate was 7.3, while the Los Angeles-Long Beach metro area was 5.1. The murder rate in the San Francisco-Oakland- Hayward metro area was 5.1, including 6.5 in the city of San Francisco and 20 in Oakland.
