THE RACE: The presidential race for Republicans, Democrats nationally.
___
THE NUMBERS - DEMOCRATS
Hillary Rodham Clinton, 53 percent
Barack Obama, 23 percent
John Edwards, 10 percent
___
THE NUMBERS - REPUBLICANS
Rudy Giuliani, 25 percent
Mike Huckabee, 19 percent
Mitt Romney, 17 percent
Fred Thompson, 14 percent
John McCain, 12 percent
___
OF INTEREST:
Giuliani, who had a much wider lead earlier this year, has lost support from conservatives and Republicans following the race closely. Just 28 percent of his own supporters back him strongly now, down from 45 percent a month ago. With faith emerging as a major consideration in the GOP race, only 27 percent of all voters say a leader should consider their religion in making decisions. While Giuliani has lost ground and Huckabee has gained since last month, there's been little change in the Democratic race. Among all voters, the economy now tops Iraq as the No. 1 election issue, with just over one-fourth saying the economy is in good shape.
___
The ABC News-Washington Post poll was conducted from Dec. 6-9. It involved telephone interviews with 1,136 adults, for whom the margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points. Included were interviews with 429 likely Democratic primary voters for whom the margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4.5 points, and 293 likely Republican primary voters for whom the margin of sampling error was plus or minus 5.5 points.
