New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) on Saturday announced the passage of legislation that would strip all firearms from New Yorkers convicted of domestic violence, updating a previous law that prohibited abusers from owning handguns.
In a press release (https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-announces-passage-legislation-remove-guns-domestic-abusers) on the governor's website, Cuomo said the law, which passed the state Assembly by 85-32 and Senate by 41-19 this week, will make the state "safer and stronger."
"New York is once again leading the way to prevent gun violence, and with this common sense reform, break the inextricable link between gun violence and domestic violence," Cuomo said.

I don't understand. It says convicted domestic abusers. Convicted Felons already lose their gun possession rights? So does this extend the law to misdemeanor convictions?

Edit: Yes that's exactly what it means. I found more info here: https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-announces-passage-legislation-remove-guns-domestic-abusers

Form-a-Law
Given the clear link between divorce and domestic violence
couples filing for separation or marriage must surrender their firearms.
further,
Given the undeniable connections between alcohol and domestic violence
only single people shall be permitted to purchase alcohol.
further,
Given the manifest links between poverty, unemployment and domestic violence
all married foodstamp applicants must surrender their firearms.
(this is fun try it)

Last month, Governor Cuomo spearheaded the creation of the "States for Gun Safety" coalition to combat the gun violence epidemic. Together with New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, New York State entered into an agreement to trace and intercept illegal guns, better share information on individuals prohibited from buying or owning firearms, and create the first-in-the-nation regional gun violence research consortium. In the face of continued federal inaction, Massachusetts, Delaware, and Puerto Rico have already joined the coalition which now represents over 35 million Americans.

Huh? Puerto Rico has strict gun laws(unconstitutional).

Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act already does this seemingly, is NY is trying to change anything ?

18 USC Section 922(g) It shall be unlawful for any person -
(1-8),(9) who has been convicted in any court of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence,

. . .to ship or transport,. . ., or possess . . .; or to receive any firearm or ammunition which has been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce.
