View Full Version : Chatter that Mueller could be fired or a war escalated week of March 25th seems incredible

Such chatter may have been sparked by comments of some media hosts but seems mostly speculative and without a credible basis. There is also almost certain chance of a bipartisan Congressional revolt in the unlikely case that such conspiratorial "distraction" news scenarios actually became reality.
Granted White House would prefer not to see March 25th CBS 60 minutes interview of Stormy broadcasted and Trump publicly joining lawsuit aimed at stopping Stormy from talking about alleged affair raises stakes, highly unlikely that White House would create even bigger probems just to distract public attention from other potential problems.

Trouble for Trump if Mueller meets Stormy

Avenatti also told Cuomo (https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/16/politics/stormy-daniels-lawyer-women-cnntv/index.html) that Daniels has faced physical threats, saying she'll disclose more details in an upcoming "60 Minutes" interview later this month. He would not answer whether or not it was someone close to the President who threatened her, and later told CNN he couldn't answer a question about whether he or Daniels filed a police report.

If Avenatti's statements are true, the interviews suggest that it may be time for Robert Mueller to meet Stormy Daniels. His investigation should focus on possible election law violations relating to the $130,000 hush money payment given to her.

War And Boobs, Donald Trump

To be fair, there might be grudges involved in some of recent media coverage about him.

Jared Kushner Told Joe Scarborough: Talk to President Trump About ‘Enquirer’ Dirt

The president’s son-in-law advised the ‘Morning Joe’ host to speak to the president directly about an upcoming tabloid ‘hit piece.’

On Friday, MSNBC hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough made the explosive claim that three of President Donald Trump’s most senior White House aides “warned” the couple that the tabloid The National Enquirer would publish dirt on them unless they “begged” the president to intervene.

Trump lawyer’s efforts to suppress Stormy Daniels started in 2011

By Frances Stead Sellers March 17

The president’s personal attorney Michael Cohen interceded in 2011 to prevent porn star Stormy Daniels from airing her story about an alleged affair with Donald Trump, telling the agent who arranged for its publication that he could harm her career, according to a person involved in the discussions.
Randy Spears, the ex-husband of agent Gina Rodriguez, told The Washington Post he answered the phone when Cohen called Rodriguez after she arranged for Daniels to earn $15,000 by telling her story to a celebrity publication.
“You tell Gina that if she ever wants to work in this town again, she’ll call me immediately,” Spears said Cohen told him. He said Rodriguez, who declined to take Cohen’s call, contacted her lawyer instead.

GOP lawmakers warn Trump against firing Mueller

The president took to Twitter Sunday morning to criticize the special counsel's investigation into Russian meddling (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-claims-democratic-bias-in-russia-investigation-suggests-mccabe-memos-are-fake/) in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and potential Trump campaign collusion.
"Why does the Mueller team have 13 hardened Democrats, some big Crooked Hillary supporters, and Zero Republicans?" Mr. Trump tweeted at 8:35 a.m. ET. "Another Dem recently added...does anyone think this is fair? And yet, there is NO COLLUSION!"

Mueller is a Republican, and was named director of the FBI by Republican President George W. Bush. Mueller's investigation is overseen by Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general Mr. Trump nominated himself.

The tweets have put lawmakers on edge, particularly members of Mr. Trump's own party, for fear that he may fire Mueller. Mr. Trump's personal lawyer John Dowd called for Rosenstein to "bring an end (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trumps-personal-lawyer-says-rosenstein-should-bring-an-end-to-russia-probe/)" to the Russia investigation Saturday, adding to the tension.
Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-South Carolina, who sits on the House Intelligence Committee, appeared on "Fox News Sunday (http://www.foxnews.com/transcript/2018/03/18/rep-trey-gowdy-mueller-probe-should-not-be-shut-down.html)" to address Mr. Trump personally.
"My advice to the president is the same thing I just told his lawyer: give Bob Mueller the time, the independence and the resources to do the very job. Keep in mind, Chris, he didn't volunteer for this," Gowdy said addressing host Chris Wallace. "Give him the time, the resources, the independence to do his job, and when you are innocent, if the allegation is collusion with the Russians and there is no evidence of that, and you're innocent of that, act like it."
House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, issued a statement regarding Mr. Trump and his harsh words for Mueller to the New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/18/us/politics/trump-mueller.html).
"As the speaker has always said, Mr. Mueller and his team should be able to do their job," a spokeswoman for Ryan told the Times.
His Senate counterpart, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, has yet to comment on the ordeal.
Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, said on CBS News' "Face the Nation (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/sen-angus-king-says-andrew-mccabes-firing-seems-like-an-act-of-vengeance/)" Sunday that it would be a "huge mistake" and "a true constitutional crisis" for the president to fire Mueller, whom he described as being "as straight an arrow as there is in America."
"He's just doing his job," King said. "And for the administration to keep trying to undercut what they're trying to do -- the president keeps saying there's no story here, they didn't do anything wrong. If they didn't do anything wrong, why are they going to such extreme lengths to undermine this investigation, which is being carried out in a very responsible way?"
Sen. James Lankford, R-Oklahoma, said on ABC's "This Week" (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/week-transcript-18-18-rep-adam-schiff-sen/story?id=53822872) that he doesn't see Mueller's firing as a likely move.

That is not a fully accurate translation but taking it on face value, in current political developments there will be very little to dissect & analyze here if political discussion was limited to only confirmed facts relating to the parties involved (leader in chief vs media). Very large number of top political headlines are "unreliable" facts but those have big impact on masses nonetheless.

But puzzling part is that this scandal story was broken by Fox owner owned WSJ and they have done pretty damaging reporting on his lawyer's shell company etc. Still not convinced it was a leak from any of the agencies he might be at war with.

And there are warnings from both Dem/GOP camps.

Firing Mueller would end Trump’s presidency

Linda Chavez

The genius of an Abraham Lincoln or Thomas Jefferson would be insufficient to juggle the multiple crises facing the current president over the past week.
There is the poison gas attack in Syria; a looming trade war with the world’s second-biggest economy, China; a criminal probe involving both the president and his longtime personal lawyer; and the resignation of the Republican speaker of the House, the man chiefly responsible for passing the president’s signature accomplishment, tax reform.

In the days and weeks ahead, Trump may well fire Robert Mueller in hopes that removing the special counsel will end the inquiry into Russian meddling and the Trump campaign’s role or lack thereof. Apparently, that’s the counsel of former White House adviser turned guru to the alt-right in Europe Steve Bannon.
If Trump were to do so, he would provoke a constitutional crisis and his own undoing. The investigation into crimes would not disappear with the firing of Robert Mueller, nor would Trump or his campaign be out of the woods. Any criminal activity would still be prosecuted, and Democrats — whose likelihood of capturing the House, if not also the Senate, would rise dramatically after a Mueller firing — would lead the fight to impeach Trump.

It was the same attitude he brought to his private life. “When you’re a star, they let you do … anything,” Trump told Billy Bush on the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape in which he bragged about sexually assaulting women.
But in our system, no man is above the law. It’s a tradition that goes back to the Magna Carta in 1215, which recognized that even the king was bound by law. Donald Trump is bound by the Constitution, which he swore an oath to protect and defend. If he were to try to stop a legitimate and necessary investigation into Russia’s meddling in the presidential election and whether anyone in his campaign aided or abetted it, he would undermine the rule of law.
I doubt he cares — but he does care about his own survival. So he should know that firing Mueller would not save the Trump presidency but lead him to the inevitable ignominy of impeachment.

Linda Chavez serves on the board of Republicans for the Rule of Law and is a senior fellow at the Niskanen Center.
