(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP, FEBRUARY 1, 1972)

NIXON: “Newsweek” is totally — it's all run by Jews and dominated by them in their editorial pages. The “New York Times, the “Washington Post”, totally Jewish too.

GRAHAM: And they're the ones putting out the pornographic stuff. But this stranglehold has got to be broken or this country is going to go down the drain.

NIXON: Do you believe that?

GRAHAM: Yes, sir.

NIXON: I can't ever say it, but I believe it.

GRAHAM: But if you get elected a second time, we might be able to do something.

Why do you call him "beloved leader of Christian Zionism"?

I've never associated him with that movement before.

Apparently the Zionists do.

Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, President and Founder of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, issued a statement saying that "Alongside our millions of Christian supporters and on behalf of the Jewish people, we mourn the passing of Rev. Dr. Billy Graham, a towering figure in Christianity and a historic ally and defender of Israel and of the Jewish people. Billy Graham was a giant. He set the ground for our mission of Christian-Jewish and interfaith bridge building and was a voice for truth and morality.

"He was a man of unbending Christian faith, but also of tolerance and understanding and cooperation, even with those who didn't share his convictions. He was a man who transcended all divisions. He led the path for Christian Zionists, and was a Christian role model and partner in building interfaith bridges, compassion and love. May his memory be a blessing and may we emulate his legacy of maintaining our convictions and yet being open and respectful and loving, even to others who don’t share our beliefs.”

The elder Graham was an early and avid backer of Israel. A tour of the country in 1960 raised the country’s profile among American evangelicals, establishing the seeds of strong pro-Israel support that persist in that community until now. In 1967, he urged Israeli leaders not to yield to diplomatic pressures that could endanger the country’s security; such entreaties, commonplace now on the American right, were unusual at the time. He made a film, “His Land,” about Israel that continues to be screened among pro-Israel evangelicals.

Thanks to PierzS for posting above articles, I had that impression after reading similar articles in the past. Most Evangelicals tend to be zionists, though things may have changed a bit since bloodbath of Iraqi freedom war.
Billy G also seemed bit more beloved than other evangelical leaders like John Hagee (who is still with us).

Not sure, but to be fair those tapes were recorded by Nixon secretly in 1970s and media landscape may have changed since then without even knowing if BG was making factual statements then.

That's definitely true. And I'm not surprised to see that Graham leaned that way (although I wouldn't have known it without specifically looking for it).

But it still doesn't appear to have been a big part of his ministry. There's a huge supply of sermons, writings, films, and things from Graham. So just turning up a few zionist tidbits out of all that doesn't really justify characterizing him as if that were a defining part of his legacy. And the fact that that element of his legacy gets highlighted in retrospectives of him that are specifically oriented to Jewish audiences isn't surprising either.

Good points.

On a related foreign/domestic policy nexus note, he like other Christian Zionism leaders was at times also seen as "anti-semitic" by Jewish people. Saw this in news earlier:

Billy Graham, who championed Israel in public and derided Jews in private, dies at 99
jta.org
7 hours ago - WASHINGTON (JTA) — Billy Graham, the giant of American evangelism who was exalted by Jews for his championing of Israel at its hour of need and then condemned when a nasty anti-Semitic streak was revealed, has died. Graham, 99, died at his home in Montreat, North Carolina, media reported.

He just couldn't make it to 100 could he?

Why couldn't Hagee join him? What's his unfinished deed?
