Why oh why in the world would Huckabee do this! Apparently he wants to trash the Romney and leave it wide open for Ron Paul.

He wrote an article entitled

"Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

Oh the tangled webs we weave.

As with Rudy, Huckabee is now finished. There are just way to many freaky occurrences in his past, plus this ridiculous religious battle he feels he needs to fight....all on top of the fact that the poll came out today and revealed that he would get absolutely trounced by Hillary in the general election.

And this is why, my friends, you try to stay clean as long as you can. There were many here who wanted the Paul campaign to start attacking Huck as he got a sudden surge of poll support and all his dirty little secrets starting to come up.

We didn't.

And now Romney has gotten scared and has run an ad about Huckabee's immigration stance and now Huckabee is doing this. They will destroy each other and Paul will be there.

Of all the problems any serious conservative Christian would have with Mormonism as a religion, *this* is what Huckabee goes with?

DEMS HOLD FIRE ON HUCKABEE; SEE 'EASY KILL' IN GENERAL ELECTION
(http://www.drudgereport.com/flashhu.htm)
**Exclusive**

Democrat party officials are avoiding any and all criticism of Republican presidential contender Mike Huckabee, insiders reveal.

The Democratic National Committee has told staffers to hold all fire, until he secures the party's nomination.

The directive has come down from the highest levels within the party, according to a top source.

Within the DNC, Huckabee is known as the "glass jaw -- and they're just waiting to break it."

In the last three weeks since Huckabee's surge kicked in, the DNC hasn't released a single press release criticizing his rising candidacy.

The last DNC press release critical of Huckabee appeared back on March 2nd.

[DNC Press Release Attack Summary:

Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) – 37% (99 press releases)
Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY) – 28% (74)
Senator John McCain (R-AZ) – 24% (64)
Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN) – 8% (20)
Governor Mike Huckabee – 2% (4)]

In fact, as the story broke over the weekend that Huckabee said he wanted to isolate AIDS patients back in 1992, the DNC ignored the opportunity to slam the candidate from the left.

"He'll easily be their McGovern, an easy kill," mocked one senior Democrat operative Tuesday morning from Washington.

"His letting out murderers because they shout 'Jesus', his wanting to put 300,000 AIDS patients and Magic Johnson into isolation, ain't even scratching the surface of what we've got on him."

The discipline the Democrats have shown in not engaging Huckabee has earned the praise of one former Republican Party official:

"The Democrats are doing a much better job restraining themselves than the GOP did in 2003 when Howard Dean looked like he was on the brink of winning the nomination."

A close friend to Huckabee explains: "Look, Mike is Hillary Clinton's worst nightmare. They should be squirming."

Here's the thing, like Ives in Iowa said: We're in the perfect place right now. We're not peaking too early (that allows for exposure to attacks, along with supporter discontent and malaise once said attacks begin in earnest), and we're not going to peak too late.

About the only 'attacks' that have come from this camp are from independent-minded Paul supporters on Digg, so far as I've seen, and I hope they stop.

The beauty of this is it frames the sworn 'I won't attack' Huckabee as a hypocrite, and the tussle between them as a religious candidate 'mini-war' which will take them both down just in time for Iowa and New Hampshire. Giuliani's already facing a major loss of support, Thompson's abandoned N.H. so look for Paul to pick up his votes, and McCain's Bush-like rhetoric isn't energizing anyone but himself.

The sickest thing about this? Huckabee said he wouldn't talk about his faith, and keeps his sermons off the political table. Here he is trying to draw another's out.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (CNN) – Mike Huckabee called fellow Republican Mitt Romney’s new ad “desperate” Tuesday, comparing his actions to those of “a tattle-tale in third grade.”

“We didn’t like it when we were in the third grade, I don’t think we like it running for president either,” the former Arkansas governor said during an Iowa press conference. “The more desperate and frantic campaigns get when they see how much money they’ve spent and we’re winning, that causes people to do some sometimes desperate things.”

Right on huck, Desperate things is one thing, opening your mouth without thinking is another. I see a visa priceless ad coming from this.

Man, talk about digging one's own grave. Huck's site now has a 'clarification', if you could call it that:

News Release: Huckabee Campaign Responds to AP/New York Times Report
December 11, 2007
LITTLE ROCK, AR – A report released tonight cites an upcoming article in the Sunday edition of The New York Times Magazine which quotes former Arkansas Governor and Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee asking a question about the content of the Mormon faith. In fact, the full context of the exchange makes it clear that Governor Huckabee was illustrating his unwillingness to answer questions about Mormonism and to avoid addressing theological questions during this campaign.

“Governor Huckabee has said consistently that he believes this campaign should center on a discussion of the important issues confronting our nation,” said Senior Advisor, Dr. Charmaine Yoest, “and not focus on questions of religious belief. He wants to assure persons of all faith traditions of his firm commitment to religious tolerance and freedom of worship. Governor Huckabee believes that one of the great strengths of our nation lies in its diversity of thought, opinion and faith.”

Sure is a funny way of 'clarifying'.

I partially agree, if only for the fact that Huckabee would be the perfect symbol of a religious escalation against the Middle East. Tactically speaking, the worst thing we can do is come off as an even deeper theocracy than that which Bush has already projected. It would not only be more dangerous for us, but for Christians around the world. (And this is an atheist speaking.)

I seriously doubt Huck's supporters have thought through the implications a Huckabee or Romney presidency would present on the world stage, and the perception other nations would have for us as a result. Both of these candidates are far, far too theologically driven in terms of the clear demarcation line between being religious, and being a religious zealot. A cursory scan of the rhetoric from Huckabee and over there at the Huck's Army forum demonstrates that in a crystalline manner.

Right now, what you're seeing between Huckabee and Romney is a clear-cut case of religious zealotry; a miniature 'holy war' between Christianity and Mormonism, if you will, with neither camp appearing particularly tolerant towards one another. (Have you read some of their supporter's sites? It makes the candidates seem tame, if you can imagine that; I stumbled across one Huck supporter who actually still advocated isolating AIDS patients today, for instance. Freedom Brothers, I believe it was.) While it won't go over well for either of them in the end, what others see is a clear-cut disrespect for the Islamic faith through their perpetual emphasis on continuing the war. In the case of Huckabee, it's even emptier, as it's nothing more than a continuation based on "saving face" and "restoring honor" to our country. Such prideful stances have led to the downfall of entire civilizations in the past, and I'm afraid what Huckabee represents is nothing different.

What Paul represents is a reasonable approach to invoking religious convictions without having to tell everyone that he believes in God to prove himself. That's what sets him apart from the rest, and thankfully we have such a candidate on the ticket. Even atheists such as myself can respect such a perspective, and it's always refreshing to wake up and realize that, hey, there are Christians out there that don't need to whip it out and measure it against everyone else, then scream it to the world in order to prove something that shouldn't have to be proven to begin with.

Does anyone else think that this Huckabee surge and the subsequent inserting the foot in the mouth may be an "establishment" plan to help out Giuliani?

Giuliani's strategy all along has been to downplay the early states and wait for Florida and Super Tuesday. Romney's strategy has been to get Iowa, NH, SC and Michigan and hope the momentum carries him into Super Tuesday.

With Huckabee's 'surge', this is going to make Romney fight tooth and nail in the early states. The Giuliani shills have been very quiet lately.

My take is that they are trying to herd the religious right somehow. They can set up a win in Iowa for Huck, have him drop like a rock afterwards. Then Giuliani or Romney can pick him up for VP and they can take all the Christian votes together and built up that faux-fiscal conservative/social conservative alliance that Rove created a while back.

If you look at American politics, there's really three factions: the liberals, the fiscal conservatives, and the social conservatives. The social conservatives occasionally flock to the democrats because they really aren't about small government. These are the people who were Southern Democrats who defected to the Republican party in the 60s after the Democrats ushered in stuff like the Civil Rights Act. Unless Republicans herd these religious people and use their vote, they cannot get in.

Problem is, the republican fake fiscal conservatives are really about corporate welfare. They won't get their corporate welfare without scapegoating minorities, non-Christians, and gays. They'll use the religious right in the process.

Now, the Ron Paul Revolution is truly dangerous. The reason is because it pulls from the liberals, the fiscal conservatives, and actually even some social conservatives. If the Ron Paul revolution takes hold, there's a new alliance that totally shatters the game that people have been playing for a while to manipulate the religious crowd.

Some things in history never change -- Jesus is as much of a tool for political gain now as he was through most of Europe's history.
