Enviros Push Meat Tax

Environmentalists are targeting your hamburgers and buffalo wings with a “Meat Tax.” And they claim they have “never been closer to a meat tax.”

As reported by Bloomberg Law:

Hamburger addicts, barbecue junkies, and fried chicken fanatics may soon be asked to pay a surcharge for their obsessions with meat.

Excise taxes on beef, pork, and chicken could be the next big thing in a state and local tax environment that’s already comfortable with “sin tax” regimes aimed at cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, and gambling and is adapting quickly to special levies on sugar-sweetened beverages, greenhouse gases, and marijuana.

While there are no current legislative proposals imposing state or local surcharges on meat, a growing number of public health, environmental, and animal rights advocates are bullish on tax schemes addressing the mounting social costs of meat production and consumption.

“We have never been closer to a meat tax,” said Ashley Byrne, associate director of campaigns for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). “We have seen people—including meat eaters—realizing that meat is bad for their health and meat is taking this incredible toll on the environment. People seem more open than ever to an excise tax on meat. If we are going to tax tobacco, if we are going to tax soda, it absolutely makes sense to have a similar tax on meat."

There is no food tax here . Secretly I hope they do it so it will make it easier to goad the masses into eliminating these people altogether . Publicly though I will just say they are evil, Godless , dangerous crazies and I support no new taxes .

With the beef lobby being so strong, I don't see this happening. The environmentalists don't seem to realize even they pay through farm subsidies for beef to be raised here.

People should be able to eat what they want with no interference from government. No subsidies and no taxes.

Our sales tax here is 9.25%. It's more for foods that are "unhealthy." A chocolate bar with nuts is "healthy," so it is taxed at the normal rate. A plain chocolate bar is taxed at 9.75% because it is less healthy. There is no rhyme or reason to what government does.

I don't see why these people call for a tax instead of calling to ending subsidies. The reason a burger costs $1.00 and the salad cost $5.00 is because our tax dollars are being used to lower the burger cost.

But yeah, PETA call for a meat tax ain't eva gonna happen.

I have one dog named Mongo and two kitties named Calypso and Meesh.

So she named her dog after a slur used against people with disabilities. why haven't they run her out on a rail yet?

Prohibitionists are all the same.

And meat is not the only target. Next will be eggs and cheese...

What’s the hardest part about your job? Knowing every day when I close my laptop and put my work away that I may get the night or the weekend off, but the animals suffering at the hands of the meat, dairy, egg, and fur industries don’t.

There's a few billion people across the Pacific ascending into "middle class status" that will need American raised beef, pork and poultry products. We are the bread basket of the world, ya know? The "sin" tax is a tax on the sin of wishing to eat beef produced here and not seeking protein in the form of GMO soy and cricket powder, while Chinese eat beef raised here. People like Ashley Byrne are useful idiots to bigger agenda setters.

Nah, her face is fine she just has big fingers. Why do you think the one on the left has such a big smile on her face? Her fingers are tiny. I'll bet I could peel the one on the right, she looks like she could use a sausage.

Monetary inflation is the real sin tax. My beef has gone up a lot in the last few years. Mcdoubles used to be a dollar now they are 2 dollars.

Except they often either have very high import taxes or ban US beef altogether.

Right, and I never hear anyone talking about that. Everyone here who has Netflix should watch the documentary "What the Health?"

The ban of US beef has been lifted. Not sure what, if any, import duties would apply BUT Trump did say today that he's open to joining TPP after all. Not that it was any surprise but I imagine that would address such import duties.

We must stop the immigrants, they might vote to impose a tax on meat.

Just like the progressive disasters of the early part of the last century, immigrants overwhelmingly support larger and more intrusive government.

So yes, you're right.
