There was a time in American politics when calling someone a socialist was a slur. Not anymore, at least for many younger Americans who are developing a distrust of capitalism.
One of the most popular politicians in recent times is Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-described Democratic Socialist who almost captured the Democratic nomination for president. A 2016 Harvard University poll said 51% of young Americans — 18- to-29-year-olds — oppose capitalism. And a poll conducted the next year by YouGov and the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation found that most American millennials preferred to live in a socialist country than a capitalist one.
The reasons why some millennials prefer socialism have been documented. Lingering scars from the Great Recession; staggering student debt; the greatest economic inequality since before the Great Depression — all have contributed to an unease about capitalism.

It is relevant because today is MLK day. And for some reason the world shuts down to honor a guy who wanted to make America much less free than it is even now.

It is news because a major network referring to socialism as cool is more repugnant than anything Donald Trump has said in the last year.

They're going to have to do a helluva lot better than 51% amongst the college-aged/20-somethings before socialism takes root in this country. Hell, I was a fucking socialist in college. I'm pleasantly surprised the percentage is that low in 2018. Many if not most of those kids are gonna grow up, get taxed and get good and tired of it, just like many of us did.

There's little doubt in my cynical view that the country is trending in the wrong way, but CNN is jumping the shark, in my opinion. They're as much a victim of social media as the rest of us - they're banking on what I believe/hope is a short-term oeuvre, and forgetting that the great leftist tide tends to subside once those kids grow up, start to become economically successful and start paying a noticeable amount in taxes. And what's more? We're having fewer and fewer kids with each successive generation... which means the population *should* become more and more "conservative" (not that this is necessarily a good thing overall, but probably good with regard to the advance of "socialism", as it were).

The problem is that what MLK was speaking of was NOT capitalism. True capitalism is freedom and few Americans know or understand this.

The name has been stolen and is now used for what is really crony-capitalism or mercantilism. And was one of the main reasons for the Revolution.

WTF!? Socialism inevitably leads to communism, which leads to both mass-democide and genocide. We are suppose to learn from history, not become dumbed down to then repeat it.
