Bombogenesis
It's called a "nor'easter".
They happen every year, from late fall into winter into early spring, usually four or five every year.
Sometimes even in high summer, bringing 40 degree temps in August and drizzle and cool ocean winds.
When they occur on a period of astronomical high tides, flooding occurs as well.
Every year. Year after year.
Ben Franklin observed them and because of his observations, he first discovered the existence of the Gulf Stream, which provides the year round warm water "fuel" for these storms.
"Bombogenesis"...pfft.
Bomb-Bastic is more like it.

That said, it is an impressive storm.
“As of noon, the current storm had a central pressure of 28.08 inches (951 mb) and was more intense than the 1991 Perfect Storm and the Blizzard of 1993," according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Jesse Ferrell.
"These storms had pressures of 28.70 inches (972 mb) and 28.34 inches (960 mb) respectively,” Ferrell added.

I live in the midwest and the goobers on radio and teevee have been jacking themselves hyping up this cold snap by announcing that New Year's day had a "record-breaking" low temp. They said that is was record-breaking by being the fourth coldest temp on that day.
Wow, how is that record-breaking?
It truly is the case that anything you hear on the radio, see on the teevee, or read in a newspaper is an exaggeration, a fallacy, or a lie.

ARE BOMB CYCLONES REAL? THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A NOR'EASTER, BLIZZARD AND A WINTER HURRICANE
A winter storm dubbed Grayson has been described as a "bombogenesis," "bomb cyclone" and "winter hurricane." The storm is already barreling up the southeastern coast and conditions are expected to reach their peak in New England on Thursday.
. . .
The winter storm this week is "a bomb cyclone and a nor'easter."

ARE BOMB CYCLONES REAL?
No
It is made up by atmospheric students as were the other terms used,, and repeated over and over by giggling Broadcasters.
but is seems to affect those with Chicken Little Syndrome most.

Massachusetts is gone. We have started eating people. Send help and may God have mercy on our souls.
That's terrible!.....Libtards taste horrible without lots of A-1 sauce to mask that nut smell....
It's even worse. They have no spines or other bones so it's like eating endless cups of vanilla pudding with a kale aftertaste.
OMG stop I'm gonna pee!

Why?
Why do people continue to do stupid things every time Mother Nature shows who is Boss.
Hurricanes,, tornadoes, Blizzards,,, all events our ancestors sought shelter from..
And Some Fool has To Leave Shelter to Unnecessary peril. Usually just to show off.

Hopefully something soon. Our "wet season" runs November through March and so far we have zero rain. The drought is returning after last year's way above average rainfall.

949 millibar was the lowest pressure recorded for this winter storm
storm system had deepened by 53 mbar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar_(unit)) (hPa (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascal_(unit)); 1.57 inHg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inches_of_mercury)) in 21 hours,
The drop in pressure was over twice the threshold (24 mbar (hPa; 0.71 inHg) in 24 hours)
and the source for this . . .
It's own wikipedia page already
