Need to confirm if the NW headline is accurate as body of news has different wording:

Trump ‘Will Be Taught a Lesson’ For UN Threats Over Jerusalem Showdown, Turkey’s President Says

By Cristina Maza On 12/21/17

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday he hopes the United Nations will punish President Donald Trump for threatening countries that have pushed back on Trump's controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. During an awards ceremony in Turkey’s capital Ankara, Erdogan slammed Trump (https://apnews.com/4787f92c85a947f6a42387162c69a08a?utm_campaign=Soci alFlow&utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=AP) for threatening to cut off U.S. funding to countries that are opposed to his decision about Jerusalem. Erdogan said he hopes the U.S. “will be taught a lesson.”

Erdogan said Trump is using money to pressure countries to vote in favor of the U.S.

“Mr. Trump, you cannot buy Turkey’s democratic will with your dollars. Our decision is clear,” said Erdogan (https://apnews.com/4787f92c85a947f6a42387162c69a08a?utm_campaign=Soci alFlow&utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=AP), whose country is sponsoring Thursday’s motion at the U.N. “I call on the whole world: Don’t you dare sell your democratic struggle and your will for petty dollars.”

The UN General Assembly will hold an emergency session Thursday to vote on whether to adopt a resolution condemning Trump’s decision. In response, Trump has said that he will be watching the votes carefully, and has suggested that U.S. aid for countries could be scrapped if they vote in favor of the resolution.

In Blow to Trump and Netanyahu, UN Rejects U.S. Recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's Capital

An overwhelming majority of 135 member states voted in favor of the resolution, with only 9 voting against and 35 abstaining

In a major diplomatic blow to Israel and U.S. President Donald Trump, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution rejecting the American recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital (http://www.haaretz.com/us-news/1.827295), with 128 member states voting in favor of the resolution and a mere nine voting against it.

Speaking ahead of the vote, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used strong words to bash the international body, calling it a "house of lies" (https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/1.830375) and proclaiming that "the State of Israel rejects this vote outright" and that "Jerusalem is our capital, we will continue to build there and additional embassies will move to Jerusalem."

The General Assembly's emergency discussion was being held at the request of Turkey and Yemen, who turned to the UN after an Egyptian draft resolution was presented to the Security Council and was vetoed by the United States (https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/1.829759), although the other 14 member states voted in its favor.

UN votes resoundingly to reject Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as capital

The United Nations general assembly has delivered a stinging rebuke to Donald Trump, voting by a huge majority to reject his unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/dec/06/donald-trump-us-jerusalem-israel-capital).
The vote came after a redoubling of threats by Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN, who said that Washington would remember which countries “disrespected” America by voting against it.

Despite the warning, 128 members voted on Thursday in favour of the resolution supporting the long-standing international consensus that the status of Jerusalem – which is claimed as a capital by both Israel (https://www.theguardian.com/world/israel) and the Palestinians – can only be settled as an agreed final issue in a peace deal. Countries which voted for the resolution included major recipients of US aid such as Egypt, Afghanistan and Iraq.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/dec/21/united-nations-un-vote-donald-trump-jerusalem-israel

The General Assembly passed the resolution with 128 nation in favor, nine nations voting against and 35 countries abstaining.
Major allies like Britain, France, Germany and Japan all voted for the resolution, though some allies, like Australia and Canada, abstained.
The resolution is nonbinding and therefore largely symbolic.
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/21/world/middleeast/trump-jerusalem-united-nations.html

Nikki Haley : “The United States will remember this day,” she said, when it was attacked in the General Assembly for exercising its sovereignty. It “will remember” that the US was again asked to make the largest contribution of any country to the UN, she said, and it will remember how the vote went when other countries come to the US for help.

Looks like Nimrata Haley's conveyed threat of "taking names" did not work:

Although this could be seen as a huge insult in some diplomatic quarters, this was a tough issue/crowd and hopefully Trump would not say "You're fired" to Nimrata who lately had been compared to fake Iraq WMD preso fame disgraced Colin Powell.

Palestinians called on U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday night to accept the UN General Assembly's vote (https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/1.830498) that overwhelmingly rejected the American president's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Nabil Abu Rdeneh, a senior adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas thanked the 128 countries that voted in favor of the resolution, "despite all the pressure exerted on them," making a nod to diplomatic efforts by Israel as well as direct threats by Trump (https://www.haaretz.com/us-news/1.830237) and U.S. Ambassador to the UN Niki Haley (https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/1.830088).

Abu Rdeneh said in a statement to the Palestinian news agency Wafa that the vote reflects the support the Palestinians enjoy in the international community. He said the Palestinians will continue their efforts in international forums to help create a Palestinian state.

Yea who needs much of the world. This might bring the much awaited isolationism that necons had dreaded for so long.
We still have these great 9 friends who would stand with us in our hour of need without any bribery of taxpayers dollars.

Now we need to cut off foreign aid like we threatened, whatever you think of the embassy issue.

I await the end of foreign aid to the 135, if we don't do it we will lose all international influence and be a laughingstock. (that might not be such a bad outcome either)

An independent state has been rejected 5 times. When they say "independent state" they mean a larger staging area in order to attack and destroy Israel.

Trump's U.N. ambassador, Nikki Haley, upped the ante further in a speech just before the vote. Not only was foreign aid in the crosshairs, but U.S. funding for the United Nations, too, she said. Haley said the United States would "remember this day" when it was singled out for exercising its sovereignty.
"We will remember it when we are called upon to once again make the world's largest contribution to the United Nations," Haley said in the General Assembly.

Yet the ultimatums from Haley and Trump did not dissuade almost all the top recipients of the billions of dollars Washington gives each year to help with security, development and other needs.

And within hours of the U.N. vote, the Trump administration started gingerly backing away from its funding threats.
In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said cuts to countries that opposed the U.S. were not a foregone conclusion.
"The president's foreign policy team has been empowered to explore various options going forward with other nations," Nauert said. "However, no decisions have been made."
On U.N. funding, Haley's office suggested the Jerusalem vote alone would not lead the Trump administration to cut off the global organization. Under Trump, the U.S. has been conducting a broader review of United Nations funding and has already cut money to some specific U.N. agencies over abortion-related concerns.
"We will use U.N. votes as one factor in our foreign relations," Haley's office, known as the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, said in a statement. "It's not going to be the only factor, or even necessarily the number one factor, but it will no longer be ignored."
