Raleigh, N.C. — House Republicans, joined by a pair of Democrats, overturned Gov. Roy Cooper's veto of an election bill (http://www.wral.com/cooper-vetoes-judicial-bill-signs-budget-bill/17004888/) Tuesday morning, canceling North Carolina's judicial primaries next year.

Senate Bill 656 also eases ballot access for unaffiliated and third-party candidates and makes a number of other changes to state election laws, including lowering the percentage of the vote candidates must get to win a primary. It moves to 30 percent from 40 percent.

The judicial primary language though, added to the broader bill by GOP leaders at the tail end of negotiations (http://www.wral.com/lawmakers-plan-to-cancel-2018-judicial-primaries/16994979/), was what drew Cooper's veto.
