The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released two new rules today allowing employers to claim exemptions to covering contraception under the Affordable Care Act (http://abcnews.go.com/topics/news/healthcare/affordable-care-act.htm). The rules go into effect today.
The first new rule allows any employer to opt against providing birth control coverage based on the employer's religious beliefs. The second rule provides an exemption for organizations and small businesses that object on the basis of moral conviction rather than religious belief.
Legal challenges to the change in rules have already begun, including with a lawsuit filed Friday by the American Civil Liberties Union. Some state attorneys general are also conferring on possible legal action.

Heard this on the "news" this morning driving to work. The outrage was palpable.

The ACLU is just not a good defender of the First Amendment. At worst, they should take no position on this case. Forcing nuns to pay for birth control has nothing to do with the Constitution. And they should really be staunchly defending religious freedom.

This is outrageous. Contraceptives are a basic human right, like internet and college.

The people that need birth control most are the ones not using it.

You ignore the fact that I said I did not agree with many ACLU policies but only cited where they had helped some ministries I was involved in.

Reading is your friend.

Emotions aside, let it go to SCOTUS. Citizens United blew up in their faces.

Men have to buy their own condoms. The mandate for only female birth control is sexist and discriminatory.

But Obamacare is still law—doesn’t the law say they have to provide free birth control?

Abortion is a form of birth control. Men should have an equal say.
