Two Officers Shot in South Sacramento, Suspect Killed

SACRAMENTO -- Two officers were shot in South Sacramento Thursday morning, the police department has confirmed.

The shooting was on 27th Avenue, near Franklin Boulevard around 11 a.m. A Sacramento Police Department substation is nearby, one block over.

Investigators say officers were pulling over a man suspected in a double homicide when the situation began to unfold.

"Initially, the suspect was compliant and threw his keys outside the vehicle," Sacramento Police Sergeant Bryce Heinlein said.

However, police say the man did not comply with orders to show his hands.

A "be on the lookout" had been issued for the vehicle, a black Chevrolet pickup. Police wanted to talk to the man about the double homicide on Janrick Avenue, in which firefighters discovered two women dead late Friday night.

A Police Observation Device, known more commonly as a POD, spotted the truck Thursday morning.

"And within moments, he exited the vehicle and began shooting at our officers," Heinlein said.

Police say the suspect immediately began shooting and advancing toward officers with a handgun, striking several marked patrol cars.

The two officers that were shot were taken to the UC Davis Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. One was hit in the leg and one in the vest, police said. One of the officers is a 12-year veteran and the other is a 27-year veteran of the department.

Police said the suspected shooter was fatally struck when five officers returned fire.

Police say they expect to release all video related to the incident within 30 days.
