Republican Maine Gov. Paul LePage vowed to fire any sheriff who defied his order to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement officials in a letter sent Tuesday.
LePage explicitly threatened to remove any sheriff who refuses to comply with Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) requests to extend the detention of arrested individuals suspected of violating federal immigration law.

BANGOR, Maine (AP) — Republican Gov. Paul LePage is threatening to remove elected Maine sheriffs who won't detain immigrants for federal immigration officials.

The Bangor Daily News (http://bit.ly/2xFg0zQ ) reports that LePage on Monday told conservative radio host Laura Ingraham that he would issue an executive order over the issue.

The Maine Constitution allows the governor to remove an elected sheriff after a complaint, due notice and a hearing.

Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce this month announced he would reject requests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to hold prisoners in jail beyond their scheduled release. A message seeking comment from him was left Monday.

The governor did not name sheriffs. LePage spokeswoman Julie Rabinowitz told The Associated Press that removal proceedings haven't started yet.

When LePage became governor in 2011, he signed an executive order directing state officials to cooperate with federal immigration officials.
