Of course if he decides to eliminate the Iran deal, Iran will be free to pursue whatever weapons programs they want to including completing their nuclear weapons work. It would free, not constrain, them.

President Donald Trump criticized the Obama-era nuclear deal with Iran and other world powers on Saturday, tweeting that the U.S. doesn’t have “much of an agreement” after Tehran test-fired a ballistic missile.

International sanctions on Iran have been lifted under the deal in exchange for curbs to Tehran’s nuclear program. Iran’s state-run broadcast said earlier Saturday, however, that the country had test-launched a ballistic missile capable of reaching Israel, which Trump acknowledged via Twitter.

“They are also working with North Korea,” he added. “Not much of an agreement we have!”

Trump this week urged the international community not to let the “murderous” Iranian regime continue destabilizing activities as it builds “dangerous missiles.”

“And we cannot abide by an agreement if it provides cover for the eventual construction of a nuclear program,” he said in his Tuesday address before the United Nations General Assembly.

He signaled that he may renegotiate the nuclear pact or de-certify what he called “one of the worst and most one-sided transactions” in U.S. history and an “embarrassment to the United States.” That agreement did not cover ballistic missiles of the kind Iran fired on Saturday.

The Iran deal was one of the best things Obama did.

We've been meddling in Iran since the 50's and then blaming the Iranians for not appreciating it.

Disagree. They have always been "free" to pursue whatever they want; and the elimination of the Obama deal has no effect on that. However, if they want to voluntarily not work on nuclear weapons, Iran is still a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and claims to be in full compliance with its restrictions.

Iran did sign it but has been considered in "non- compliance" since 2003. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_on_the_Non-Proliferation_of_Nuclear_Weapons#Iran

Back in July Trump recertified the Iran treaty: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/17/us/politics/trump-iran-nuclear-deal-recertify.html?mcubz=0

WASHINGTON — President Trump agreed on Monday to certify again that Iran is complying with an international nuclear agreement that he has strongly criticized, but only after hours of arguing with his top national security advisers, briefly upending a planned announcement as a legal deadline loomed.

Mr. Trump has repeatedly condemned the deal brokered by President Barack Obama as a dangerous capitulation to Iran, but six months into his presidency he has not abandoned it. The decision on Monday was the second time his administration certified Iran’s compliance, and aides said a frustrated Mr. Trump had told his security team that he would not keep doing so indefinitely.

Administration officials announced the certification on Monday evening while emphasizing that they intended to toughen enforcement of the deal, apply new sanctions on Iran for its support of terrorism and other destabilizing activities, and negotiate with European partners to craft a broader strategy to increase pressure on Tehran. Aides said Mr. Trump had insisted on such actions before agreeing to the consensus recommendation of his national security team.

“The president has made very clear that he thought this was a bad deal — a bad deal for the United States,” Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, told reporters at a briefing on Monday before the decision was made.

By law, the administration is required to notify Congress every 90 days whether Iran is living up to the deal, which limited its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of many international sanctions. With the latest deadline approaching on Monday, the issue set off a sharp debate between the president and his own team, starting last week, aides said.

Iranian president: Trump's UN comments 'ignorant, absurd'

Iran's president warned Wednesday that his country will "respond decisively" to any violation of the agreement that reins in its nuclear program and called President Donald Trump's "ignorant, absurd and hateful rhetoric" about Iran unfit for the United Nations.

In remarks clearly directed at Trump's 8-month-old administration, Iranian leader Hassan Rouhani told the U.N. General Assembly: "It will be a great pity if this agreement were to be destroyed by rogue newcomers to the world of politics."

"The world will have lost a great opportunity, but such unfortunate behavior will never impede Iran's course of progress and advancement," Rouhani said.

As he spoke to the assembly, other nations began signing the first treaty to ban nuclear weapons, a pact spurned by nuclear powers.

Fifty states put their names on the nuclear weapons pact by the end of the day. Guyana, the Vatican and Thailand also have already ratified the treaty, which would take effect if 50 nations take that step.

Iran disagrees and have always claimed that they believe they are in compliance. Point is it was always voluntary constraint.
