Like much of what Trump says- mostly bluster and no real bite- he is a salesman and loves to exaggerate. He won't end trade with China which is North Korea's biggest trading partner. More are starting to learn to not take him at his literal word. And North Korea knows there is nothing the US can do to them aside from military action. US imported $463 billion worth of goods from China last year. North Korea's biggest trading partners are China, India, Russia, and Pakistan.

In the wake of North Korea’s test of its most powerful nuclear bomb yet Sunday, President Donald Trump has made another vague, ominous threat on Twitter.

But this time, it’s about economics rather than “fire and fury”:

Donald J. Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump
The United States is considering, in addition to other options, stopping all trade with any country doing business with North Korea.
9:14 AM - Sep 3, 2017

This threat to stop all trade with countries doing business with North Korea seems to be directed at China. North Korea relies on China for about 90 percent of its foreign trade, as my colleague Zeeshan Aleem recently wrote. Furthermore, Trump has repeatedly complained that China hasn’t done enough to “help” with the North Korea problem.

But the threat that US would stop “all trade” with China seems laughably implausible. The US and China engage in hundreds of billions of dollars worth of trade each year, and “stopping” this would cause massive turmoil in the US economy (as well as, of course, in the global economy).

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin used an appearance on Fox News Sunday to frame the proposal in terms of working with China to toughen sanctions on the Kim regime, and not in terms of trying to punish Beijing.

“I’m going to draft a sanctions package to send to the president for his strong consideration, that anybody that wants to do trade or business with them would be prevented from doing trade or business with us,” Mnuchin said. But he added right afterward: “We are going to work with our allies. We’ll work with China.”

Mnuchin continued: “We work with China and others. China has a lot of trade with them. There's a lot we can do to cut them off economically, much more than we've done already.”

So despite the president’s sweeping language, what is probably more likely to materialize in the end is some marginal toughening of existing sanctions, sold with tough talk. If true, that would reveal Trump’s rhetoric to be rather empty, but it would be a better outcome than a trade war.

Mattis suggests "massive military response". http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-41140621

North Korea nuclear threat: Mattis warns of 'massive military response'

Pentagon chief James Mattis says any threat to the US or its allies by North Korea will be met with a "massive military response".

His comments came after a national security briefing with President Donald Trump about the secretive communist state's latest nuclear test.

Pyongyang says it has successfully trialled a hydrogen bomb that could be loaded on to a long-range missile.

The move has drawn international condemnation.

North Korea has defied UN sanctions and international pressure by developing nuclear weapons and test missiles that could potentially reach the US.

But speaking to reporters outside the White House, Defence Secretary Mattis said the US had the ability to defend itself and its allies South Korea and Japan, adding that its commitments were "ironclad".

"Any threat to the United States or its territories - including Guam - or our allies will be met with a massive military response, a response both effective and overwhelming."

However, he said the hope was for denuclearisation, "because we are not looking to the total annihilation of a country, namely North Korea".

The UN Security Council is to hold an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss an international response, according to the US mission.

Meanwhile, President Trump has warned that America may stop trading with any country that does business with the North.

Despite the bluster and threats from the Trump administration in Washington and near-universal condemnation from around the world, Pyongyang is not going to halt or constrain its nuclear activities.

Worryingly, it also suggests that this is a programme that is progressing on all fronts at a faster rate than many had expected. So far all efforts to pressure North Korea - sanctions, isolation and military threats - have all failed to move Pyongyang.

This thread is a waste of time, If Dump actually does anything about this then it will be worth talking about.

Dunno if Trump (his banker masters, actually) would end trade with China but China is about to launch their yuan and gold backed oil futures market so the dollar's global reserve trade days are severely numbered. Trump's job is to play spin-doctor PR guy while the economic system shifts east and the dollar is dumped as global reserve. Everything he announces about money, economics, foreign policy, etc should be viewed with this in mind.

Dunno about that. Their 1.2billion people don't really need to sell anything to our 300million people, especially once their currency (and physical gold) officially overtakes the dollar and they lose any benefit of amassing dollars. They have ample opportunity to internalize their production and consumption. I think the future will be more about Americans working for Foxconn to supply Chinese consumers with junk than the other way around.

Oh look, Foxconn factories in Wisconsin. Hopefully they'll have suicide nets like the Chinese ones.

NK is red herring- the gov position hasn't changed in this regard. Before we were going to divest from China through TPP, now its because of weapons of mass destruction in NK (we blame China for propping up that regime).

And I'm sure that the US war games that are always on the borders of NK have nothing to do with the Korean angst.

This board would be a lot less flint-on-steel without the shills. Glad to have you guys here, whoever you are.

And I *really* find it hilarious, you losers still haven't figured out, the more you shills shriek, the more you lie, the more you lie, the more people realize it, and reject you. So keep posting your polls showing your shilling is working.
