The White House is willing to impose "new and serious consequences" against Iran
if American prisoners held in Iran are not repatriated to the US.

"President Trump is prepared to impose new and serious consequences on Iran
unless all unjustly imprisoned American citizens are released and returned," the administration said Friday evening.

New punitive measures will be applied against Iran if the nation's leaders do not send home all US nationals.

Washington maintains that its citizens are being held unjustly.
"For nearly 40 years, Iran has used detentions and hostage taking as a tool of state policy,
a practice that continues to this day to with the recent sentencing of Xiyue Wang to ten years in prison," the White House said.

Wang is a Chinese-born American who was recently charged with espionage.
Wang, 37, was a graduate student at Princeton studying history prior to detention.

"President Trump urges Iran to return Robert Levinson home," the statement noted.

Levinson worked for the FBI before retiring in 2007, the same year he traveled alone to Iran.
Political expert Mojtaba Jalalzadeh of the Islamic Azad University based in Iran's capital told Spuntik Persia,
"later it became known that he maintained close ties with the FBI and arrived to Iran on a spy mission."

Siamak and Baquer Namazi are also included in Washington's list of demands.

The U.S. government warned Sweden of "negative consequences" as it advocated for rapper ASAP Rocky during his trial for assault charges in Stockholm this week, according to a pair of letters released by the Swedish Prosecution Authority.
Rocky was released from jail on Friday pending the verdict, with President Donald Trump celebrating the news on Twitter. "It was a Rocky Week, get home ASAP A$AP!" Trump said.
The rapper landed back on U.S. soil Saturday, leaving behind him the looming verdict in an episode that has led to unexpected tension between the U.S. and its European ally.
According to the letters, obtained by NBC News partner Aftonbladet, the U.S. special presidential envoy for hostage affairs wrote to Swedish prosecutors urging them to release Rocky.
"The government of the United States of America wants to resolve this case as soon as possible to avoid potentially negative consequences to the U.S.-Swedish bilateral relationship," Amb. Robert O'Brien wrote in the letter, dated Wednesday.
In response Sweden's prosecutor-general, Petra Lundh, defended the independence of Swedish courts and said he therefore had to deny O'Brien's requests.
"No other prosecutor, not even I, may interfere with a specific case or try to affect the prosecutor responsible," Lundh wrote in a letter dated Thursday.
