This seems unprecedented unles Nixon had made such harsh direct attacks on media figues.
Do you agree that CNN's Jeff Zucker is a horrible human being?

In any case, while NYT neocons are usually blamed for fakenews about Iraq WMDs before war but cable media role in fakenews propaganda to aide warmongers in both parties does not seem to get indepth examination usually. Media in general seems to milk all sides for ratings if not for other nefarious aims.

President Trump told supporters he wanted to sue CNN at a private fundraiser on Wednesday, according to audio released by The Intercept. (https://theintercept.com/2017/06/30/heres-the-audio-of-donald-trumps-private-rnc-fundraiser-at-his-own-hotel/)

“Boy, did CNN get killed over the last few days,” the president said referring to a retracted story that linked Trump ally Anthony Scaramucci to a Russian investment fund (http://thehill.com/media/339293-cnn-retracts-story-linking-trump-ally-scaramucci-to-russian-fund), triggering resignations at the outlet.
“It’s a shame what they’ve done to the name CNN, that I can tell you,” continued Trump, who frequently refers to the network as "fake news."
“But as far as I’m concerned, I love it. If anybody’s a lawyer in the house and thinks I have a good lawsuit — I feel like we do. Wouldn’t that be fun?” he said. The president’s comments come as tensions have flared between the administration and the media. (http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/339769-cnn-war-with-trump-gets-personal)
Conservative sting artist James O’Keefe has taken to releasing what he says is undercover video, appearing to show a producer questioning the network’s coverage of the Russia probe, as well as contributor Van Jones saying the story of collusion between Trump and the Kremlin is a “nothing-burger.”
“Van Jones — you see this man?” Trump said at the fundraiser.
“These are really dishonest people. Should I sue them? I mean, they’re phonies. Jeff Zucker, I hear he’s going to resign at some point pretty soon. I mean these are horrible human beings,” he continued.

CNN's Jeff Zucker takes heat for dinner with Obamas
rare.us/rare-news/the-media/cnns-jeff-zucker-takes-heat-for-dinner-with-obamas/
Feb 18, 2015 - CNN president Jeff Zucker is defending his dinner at home with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Angotti makes a fantastic point. It only takes a brief examination of CNN's activity over just the last several months to paint a rather vivid picture of a junkie news network fiending for another hit of the addiction that has become ratings, and like a true addict, CNN will apparently go to any length to get their drug.

Back in February of 2013, for example, just after President Obama came out and officially declared it acceptable for the U.S. government to execute citizens via drone missile without any kind of due process, CNN provided non-stop coverage of... a stalled Carnival cruise ship. Why?

Reports The Huffington Post:
"Many people mocked CNN for its wall-to-wall coverage of the Carnival Triumph cruise ship saga. But CNN is probably having the last laugh after its ratings spiked on the night of the ship's bedraggled return to port. Even people who had been on the Triumph told the network, live on air, that it was making too much out of the story, which it covered for hour after hour after hour on Thursday. Media critics scoffed at the spectacle, which is being widely seen as a harbinger of new chief Jeff Zucker's plans to add more sensational coverage. But the numbers didn't lie: people were interested. And numbers —not critical approval— are what CNN needs. Despite sky-high profits, its stubbornly moribund prime-time and morning ratings are what led to Zucker's arrival, as well as the ouster of several of his predecessors."

When it was revealed in May of 2013 that the Department of Justice secretly subpoenaed the private phone records of several Associated Press reporters and editors, CNN provided non-stop coverage of... the trial of Jodi Arias, who murdered her ex-boyfriend. Why?

In the post-9/11 world, CNN's neutral partisan position has allowed it to essentially play both sides and act as a mouthpiece for whichever of the two corporate, war-loving parties happens to be occupying the imperial chambers of Washington. When the U.S. invaded Afghanistan in late 2001, CNN sent out a memo to its correspondents urging them to balance coverage of civilian casualties with "reminders" that the country harbors those who attacked the U.S. on 9/11. In 2003, CNN helped the Bush administration sell the Iraq invasion to the public, a war with a death toll far surpassing 100,000 civilians. And in 2011, CNN helped the Obama administration sell the 2011 Libya invasion to the public, coincidentally after Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi spoke publicly about nationalizing the country's vast oil reserves, the largest in Africa.

CNN's neutrality is not without logic here. Both the Bush administration's war in Iraq and the Obama administration's war in Libya dramatically boosted the network's ratings.

CNN President Jeff Zucker Could Reportedly Be ‘Neutralized’ as Part of AT&T-Time Warner Merger

by Justin Baragona | June 28th, 2017

According to a report by the New York Post, (http://nypost.com/2017/06/28/cnn-boss-in-crosshairs-if-att-time-warner-merger-approved/) CNN President Jeff Zucker faces an “uncertain future” if AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner, CNN’s parent company, is approved by the Justice Department this summer. As the Post noted, AT&T could be looking to “neutralize” Zucker after the purchase. And it seems to be due to the recent controversies the network has seen.

From the article:
The telco has decided to make the move after CNN has come under fire in recent weeks for highly publicized missteps — including botched reports tied to the federal probe of possible collusion between President Trump’s campaign and Russia, according to three sources familiar with the thinking of AT&T brass.
The missteps — which also include a profane anti-Trump tweet by Reza Aslan, a CNN host — have made CNN too polarizing an asset for execs at the blue chip telecom giant, a source said.

While being terminated is a possibility, per the Post’s sources, other options could be that Zucker is given an executive position with no real power over the network or CNN is just sold outright. It was also noted that Zucker could just walk away after cashing in his Time Warner stock

CNN Chief Jeff Zucker Unveils Plan to Dominate Digital: New Shows, a $25M YouTuber and Donald Trump (Of Course)

"Did you enjoy that?" asks Jeff Zucker as he walks into his fifth-floor office at CNN's Manhattan headquarters. By that, Zucker means President Donald Trump's chaotic 77-minute press conference Feb. 16 from the East Room of the White House, which had just finished up.

In addition to claiming that his administration is running like a "fine-tuned machine" despite near-daily scandals and dustups, the president continued his assault on the news media that, a week later, would result in CNN and others being banned from a daily briefing. "I watch CNN," said Trump. "The tone is such hatred." Zucker, whose network has thrived of late despite (or, more likely, in part because of) its status as presidential punching bag, seems to have enjoyed that.

By the time I join Zucker in his modest office, Jake Tapper and Wolf Blitzer are offering a recap from the anchor desk in Washington. We watch it on the largest of the 11 screens mounted on the wall opposite Zucker's desk. "It was unhinged; it was wild," says Tapper. Then CNN contributor and Trump loyalist Jeffrey Lord appears via Skype to offer a counter from Trump land. "I've been listening to you, and I think we saw two different press conferences," says Lord. "He was relaxed, he was funny, he was on point."

Zucker gestures toward the TV: "That's why it's important to have these voices," he says, deflecting a question I hadn't yet asked about the criticism CNN has faced for giving too much unfiltered airtime to factually challenged Trump-friendly pundits. Continues Lord, "I can tell you this minute that Rush Limbaugh is exalting over this …"

At this point, Zucker picks up his phone and barks into the receiver: "What about the 57 percent of people who didn't vote for him? Doesn't he have to be their president, too?" He hangs up. Seconds later, Tapper poses a version of the question to Lord.

As the debate continues, Lord points to Trump's bizarre challenge to Urban Radio Networks' African-American reporter April Ryan to "set up a meeting" with the Congressional Black Caucus as proof that the president is determined to broaden his appeal. Zucker picks up the phone again: "Then why does he have to ask April Ryan to get a meeting?"

While CNN's cable channel still defines the brand — and clearly fires up the 51-year-old Zucker — he and everyone in the media industry know that growth is coming from the digital arena. After decades in the TV trenches — as executive producer of NBC's Today, then head of NBC's entertainment division, where he greenlighted Trump's The Apprentice (the president likes to take credit for Zucker getting his CNN job; does this bother Zucker? "Not in the least. We all know the truth, so it's just amusing") — Zucker is now waging a multifront war. Entering his fourth year as president of CNN Worldwide, he has to maintain CNN's ratings and visibility against traditional cable rivals Fox News and MSNBC while also taking on a multitude of new competitors including BuzzFeed, Vice and others in the digital space.

On the TV front, Zucker and CNN have ridden the Trump wave as adeptly as any outlet. In the critical 25-to-54 demographic, CNN's daytime audience in January was up 51 percent year-over-year (Fox News was up 55 percent); it pulled in an extra $100 million in ad revenue (counting both TV and digital) last year compared with past election years. Profit for 2016 neared $1 billion, and the short-term outlook suggests the Trump bump will lead to another $1 billion haul. "It's going to turn 2017 into an even better year than we already expected to have," says Zucker.

But he knows the political boom won't last. "This is kind of crazy," says Zucker. "I don't think it's sustainable."

Nearly 10 years ago, as head of NBCUniversal, Zucker famously warned that media companies were in danger of "trading analog dollars for digital pennies." He doesn't say things like that anymore. In the era of social networks and mobile streaming, he knows that digital is where younger viewers — and growth — will come from.

This is why he's plowing resources into CNN Digital. The web and mobile platforms' basic structure is built around such subject-specific verticals as CNN Politics, CNN Money and CNN Tech, sub-brands that have helped make CNN the No. 1 digital news brand, drawing an average of 105 million multiplatform unique viewers a month in 2016, according to comScore. That outpaces Yahoo News (93 million), The New York Times (85 million), The Huffington Post (80 million) and BuzzFeed (77 million), though this data does not include traffic from content published directly on social networks such as YouTube, Facebook and Snapchat, where many digital-native brands focus their efforts. In terms of the biggest draws, digital and TV track closely: CNN's top three digital stories in 2016 were the Pulse nightclub shooting (37 million page views), the election night live blog (32 million) and the Brussels terror attack (22 million).

CNN Had a Problem. Donald Trump Solved It.
Inside the strange symbiosis between Jeff Zucker and the president he helped create.

BY JONATHAN MAHLERAPRIL 4, 2017

...

Had Trump lost the election, CNN would probably have returned to its previously scheduled struggle for survival. Instead, it has become more central to the national conversation than at any point in the network’s history since the first gulf war. And the man who is presiding over this historic moment at CNN happens to be the same one who was in some part responsible for Donald Trump’s political career. It was Zucker who, as president of NBC Entertainment, broadcast “The Apprentice” at a time when Trump was little more than an overextended real estate promoter with a failing casino business. That show, more than anything, reversed Trump’s fortunes, recasting a local tabloid villain as the people’s prime-time billionaire. And it was Zucker who, as president of CNN, broadcast the procession of made-for-TV events — the always news-making interviews; the rallies; debates; the “major policy addresses” that never really were — that helped turn Trump into the Republican front-runner at a time when few others took his candidacy seriously.

CNN was hardly the only news organization to provide saturation coverage of the Trump campaign. The media-measurement firm mediaQuant calculated that Trump received the equivalent of $5.8 billion in free media — known as “earned media,” as opposed to paid advertising — over the course of the election, $2.9 billion more than Hillary Clinton. Nor is CNN the only cable-news network that has benefited from Trump’s incarnation as a politician. MSNBC and Fox News each had a surge in ratings during the election that has shown no signs of slowing since then. Fox, the president’s preferred outlet, is coming off the best quarter in the history of 24-hour cable news. MSNBC, the network of the resistance, has been thriving, too, often even beating CNN during prime time.

But CNN was the first major news organization to give Trump’s campaign prolonged and sustained attention. He was a regular guest in the network’s studios from the earliest days of the Republican primaries, often at Zucker’s suggestion. (For a while, according to the MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, Trump referred to Zucker as his “personal booker.”) When Trump preferred not to appear in person, he frequently called in. Nor did CNN ever miss an opportunity to broadcast a Trump rally or speech, building the suspense with live footage of an empty lectern and breathless chyrons: “DONALD TRUMP EXPECTED TO SPEAK ANY MINUTE.” Kalev Leetaru, a data scientist, using information obtained from the TV News Archive, calculated that CNN mentioned Trump’s name nearly eight times more frequently than that of the second-place finisher, Ted Cruz, during the primaries.

It’s hard to imagine that either Trump or Zucker would be where he is today without the other. Trump’s foray into reality TV gave Zucker a prime-time hit when he badly needed one; now, Trump’s foray into politics has given Zucker a big story when he badly needed one. It’s a symbiotic relationship that could only thrive in the world of television, where the borders between news and entertainment, and even fantasy and reality, have grown increasingly murky.

How about Thomas Jefferson?

“The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers.”

“Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle. The real extent of this state of misinformation is known only to those who are in situations to confront facts within their knowledge with the lies of the day.”

Jefferson slammed the press all the time.

Of course, there was recently Obama who constantly slammed FOX news.

But in usual fake news way, they say Nixon was almost as harsh... to conjure up images of impeachment, corruption, and in their eyes, who must be the least popular president.

Definitely Chris Cuomo and CNN/Trump intended to go into this extended phone interview without commercial interruption for a detailed discussion of the Trump campaign platform and clear up any misunderstandings that might have happened in the days prior. I doubt it has anything to do with the mutually beneficial relationship with the network executive and the long standing relationship he has with the Cuomo family.
