Leticia Garcia set up her garage in a Chicago suburb to look like a bustling home office, outfitting it with computers, employees and posted business hours. But the grandmother was actually conducting a simple unemployment insurance scam, one that stole almost $7 million from the state of Illinois, attracted a federal investigation and on Monday earned Garcia a four-year prison sentence.
Garcia would pass out business cards at gas stations and on some days 10 to 15 people would walk into her office and hire her to file unemployment insurance claims for them, according to court papers filed by federal prosecutors. Many of her clients were Mexican-born immigrants without lawful immigration status or work permits, which made them ineligible for unemployment benefits.

Fraud does occur- no dispute there. Legally, they are not eligible for benefits as the article noted. Citizens commit even more fraud.

'Undocumented' Immigrants Pay Billions in Taxes

Immigrants illegally in the U.S. collectively contribute nearly $12 billion each year to state and local tax coffers, according to a new report that challenges recent election cycle rhetoric.

The study from the Institute on Taxation & Economic Policy found that immigrants in the U.S. without legal permission kick in their billions in the form of income, property, sales or excise taxes.

There were roughly 11 million immigrants estimated to be in the U.S. illegally as of 2013, according to the report. And each and every state collects at least a few million dollars from tax payments made by such immigrants each year, ranging from Montana's $2.2 million to California's $3.2 billion.

"Regardless of the politically contentious nature of immigration reform, the data show undocumented immigrants greatly contribute to our nation's economy, not just in labor but also with tax dollars," Meg Wiehe, the institute's state tax policy director, said in a statement last week.

That is state and local taxes only.

Unauthorized Immigrants Paid $100 Billion Into Social Security Over Last Decade

Unauthorized workers are paying an estimated $13 billion a year in social security taxes and only getting around $1 billion back, according to a senior government statistician.

Stephen Goss, the chief actuary of the Social Security Administration (SSA), told VICE News that an estimated 7 million people are currently working in the US illegally. Of those, he estimates that about 3.1 million are using fake or expired social security numbers, yet also paying automatic payroll taxes. Goss believes that these workers pay an annual net contribution of $12 billion to the Social Security Trust Fund.

The SSA estimates that unauthorized workers have paid a whopping $100 billion into the fund over the past decade. Yet as these people are in the US illegally, it is unlikely that they will be able to benefit from their contributions later in life.

If fraud or welfare payments are the concern, going after immigrants will have no real impact on it. It diverts from the issue, it does not address it.

The 12-term Texas congressman spent the better part of a 25-minute address thinking aloud about the thorny subject. He talked about how Americans are more accepting of outsiders when the economy is good, but when trouble looms there is a search for scapegoats.

"I believe Hispanics have been used as scapegoats, to say, they're the problem instead of being a symptom maybe of a problem with the welfare state," Paul told the group.

The subjects are intertwined and you know it.
Illegal Immigrants come because of the welfare, VOTE for the welfare party, and then commit many other crimes.

Illegal immigrants come for work, not welfare. They can't vote and are not eligible for federal benefits and have lower crime rates than citizens. All "fake news".

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic. The Civil War was predominantly about slavery. The tarriff issue had been settled years ago, and the South was very much against the North's rights to free slaves.

There were 5 slaves states in the Union and Lincoln didn't wave his dick in their faces like he did with the South.

America was by the 1860's populated by the most ignorant example of white men of the time . Too weak minded for even the majority to understand owning people is not right . No concept of liberty except for themselves . Simple minded tyrants , thieves and overall low moral character . Now the country is populated by a majority of communists and socialists . I would not look for this failed experiment to end well .

Tariff was an issue right up until the south seceded. It was an ongoing issue. Slavery was one part of a larger economic picture.
