View Full Version : 'Asking God To Forgive Me': N.C. Lawmaker Seeks Redemption For War Votes

Fourteen years later, Rep. Walter B. Jones still remembers with full clarity the day he started to regret his vote to go to war.

"This is the first funeral I went to that made me started thinking that I made the wrong decision of giving (President George W.) Bush the authority to go into Iraq," said Jones, pointing to a picture of Marine Sgt. Michael Bitz.

Bitz was killed in action in Iraq on March 23, 2003. He died without meeting his youngest children — twins born a month earlier. Jones, a Republican from North Carolina, attended Bitz's funeral and recalled how Bitz's wife spoke and read the last letter she received from her husband.

"She reads the letter, obviously very difficult for her to read, because it's a letter of love and appreciation, and I think everybody there was teary-eyed. And the closing of the letter, I'm paraphrasing, was that, 'I might not see you on Earth but I will see you in heaven. Love, Michael,' " Jones said.

Bitz's portrait hangs on the wall outside of Jones' congressional office in the Rayburn Building. His is one of 568 pictures of Marines killed in Iraq or Afghanistan, hung as part of a makeshift memorial Jones set up on the walls outside of his office.

All were Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune, which is in Jones' district.

Jones is a devout Catholic, and this memorial, which he started about 10 years ago, is a type of penance. So is his letter writing. Jones tries to write to the family of every service member killed in Iraq or Afghanistan. Military liaisons ask families if they would like to receive condolence letters; if they say yes, Jones writes.

"I have signed over 12,000 letters to families and extended families who've lost loved ones in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and that was for me asking God to forgive me for my mistake," he said.

Jones' profound regret for his votes to authorize the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is well known on Capitol Hill. For years, his was a lonely non-interventionist voice in the Republican Party calling to bring all combat troops home. But last week at a press conference outside the Capitol, Jones was not alone.

"My concern is that our colleagues have forgotten about the war in Afghanistan," said Rep. Tom Massie, R-Ky. "These wars that are dragging on. There are lives over there — and we're still losing lives over there — for goals that I don't think our colleagues can define."

Massie is one of nine co-sponsors — four Republicans and five Democrats — who support new legislation by Jones that would cut off money for all combat operations in Afghanistan one year after enactment. It would only allow funds for embassy operations and intelligence gathering.

Massie told NPR that it bothers him that most members of the House have never had to take a tough vote on those wars. He's right: Nearly eight of 10 sitting House members were elected after the wars were authorized in 2001 and 2002. In the years since, Congress has never revisited that debate, except to provide trillions in funding for the ongoing military operations.

That's unacceptable for Alaska Republican Don Young, another co-sponsor. "Let's find out where American people are. Let's understand one thing: Sixteen years is too long," Young said.

May God have mercy on us all. :(

They can define them, they just know if they told the truth people would wake up and hopefully, string them all up by their gizzards.

He seem to be one of the few politicians with working conscience.

Did anyone get a report of Hell freezing over?
Because I thought it most certainly would before I ever heard of a pro-war Congresscritter seeing the light.

Kudos to him, a prodigal son who returns is worthy of a fatted calf or two.

Not too bad on everything else either.

He saw the light years ago. His record has been improving for quite some time.

Yes I read that, but this is the first I heard of it.

Neat. Like you said it is pretty much unheard of for a bad politician to turn to the good side.

Really? You realize he has his own sub-forum here, right? http://www.ronpaulforums.com/forumdisplay.php?308-Walter-Jones-Forum

Walter Jones is one of the good guys. They fooled him back then, but he's been making up for it ever since.

I had heard of him, I was not aware he had voted for the wars.

Walter is one of the few in Congress who gives 0 fucks about getting primaried by GOP leadership. They've tried at least a couple times.

How sad is it that the first thing I think when reading about this is to ask whether this is some form of grandstanding? If you helped send X-thousands of men to their deaths, perhaps your attempts at expiation should be less public. Perhaps a well-written letter, to be found next to your lifeless body would demonstrate sincerity worthy of mention. Perhaps I am getting too hard-edged in my creeping old age, but I find such expressions from politicians, current or former, a bit difficult to swallow. They strike me as gestures of so-called "virtue signaling"... "OOOOooooo look at me everybody... I'm so all tore up about it... ooooOOOOooooooo..." I admit upfront I could be all wrong in this man's case, but I would have to know a lot more before accepting this as something better than the cynical machinations of a man seeking to profit on the bodies of good Americans who answered the rotten call of which his voice was part.

Have adults no sense anymore? Unless Hussein's Republican Guard were landing on the shores of NJ, there was no justification for going to war. NOW look at the sorry-assed shape in which the world of men finds itself. Where is the accountability? Where are the gallows and why are they not buzzing through the reams of just work, day and night?

"I have signed over 12,000 letters to families and extended families who've lost loved ones in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and that was for me asking God to forgive me for my mistake," he said.

See what I mean? All about what HE did. Oh, how noble!

Did he write 12K letters? By hand in pen and ink? Yeah, that's what I thought.

When it is reported he was found very dead by his own Catholic hand, I will believe that this is better than what it immediately seems.

Walter Jones is one of the good guys.

Is he? I am open to persuasion, but remain skeptical, if not doubtful.

They fooled him back then

Who fooled him, exactly, and by what means had he been fooled?

I can see no basis for having voted for war in the cases at hand. None. Perhaps I am unhinged in some serious fashion, but I would not trust NSA/CIA to tell me water was wet, much less anything else. Unless you will swear to me such that if you prove wrong I can put you into the military barracks at Leavenworth for the rest of your life that Hussein's ICBMs are being prepped for launch as we speak and that you therefore need my vote to authorize preemptive action in defense of American soil, you ain't getting doodles from me.

Where is the accountability of all the "experts" who regaled us with the lies about WMDs, etc.?

This so very much seems to be nothing better than the usual stoogery of the political class, working its magic on the imbecile American Meaner. So if you can paint this poor idiot a picture that shows something reasonably reliable in indication of something better, said idiot's mind, such as it may be, will be open to persuasion.
