The true leader of the Dwindling Free World. Sorry Trump.

“When a person is elected, they may have some ideas. Then people with briefcases arrive, well dressed, wearing dark suits… These people start explaining how things are done. And instantly, everything changes,” Putin elaborated, noting that no administration is able to escape this trap, which significantly narrows its room for maneuver.

It's nothing surprising to me but that's a pretty profound thing to read even still.

Putin's Russia isn't free.

Indeed, less so than the US

The Putin quote accurately describes how weak politicians like Trump operate - bowing to behind the scenes pressures.

The implicit and false assumption, however, is that someone who "has ideas," and doesn't bow to those pressures, has good ideas.

Putin's Russia isn't free.

Considering where they have started, they have made incredible strides. Russia and the U.S. are like two ships passing in the night. Russia is exploring free market reforms as exhibited by their extremely low personal tax rate.

It's not that hard to be more free than the USSR.

Putin's Russia isn't free.

It depends on the question, "Free from what?"

No country is free as in 'an-cap'. Russia is however free from direct remote-control by The Empire.

Russia's certainly more free than under the bolshevik regime, but maybe not by as much as you'd think, and the trend isn't so good. Spending and debt have been increasing in recent years (and not just since the sanctions), and privitization is more or less stalled. By some estimate the Russian state still controls (either on budget or via state owned enterprises) 70% of GDP. Gazprom's annual revenues alone are nearly 10% of GDP, for instance. Seems to me that, after a big boom from de-communization, Russia's marching along the familiar social democratic path (back) to communism, and I don't see Putin fighting against this tendency much more than your typical politician in the West. Best I can say about Putin is that he's not an actual communist (which is important, since there's still a lot of pro-communist sentiment in Russia). As for post-communist states, I'm more optimistic about China, since they haven't yet contracted the democratic disease.

Russian debt is only $1,068 per citizen.
America's debt is about $56,000 per citizen.

Russia borrowed money through its state-owned companies like Gazprom rather than as a nation after it defaulted in 1998 and no one wanted to lend money to them.

Also, state ownership of the private sector, woo!
