Wandering Security Robots Take Over America

A wave of wandering security robots has started to replace traditional security guards around the United States, with a number of the robots soon to be placed in malls around New York.

“The firm Knightscope plans to roll out the rent-a-cop on wheels at shopping centers, college campuses and sports arenas in 16 cities, including ones in the Empire State, by the end of the year,” reported The New York Post on Tuesday. “The five-foot-tall R2D2-style automatons weigh 300 pounds, come equipped with multiple sensors and a 360-degree cameras along with license plate recognition technology.”

Knightscope’s co-founder and former police officer, Stacy Dean Stephens, claimed that the robots could be used to potentially save lives.

“We think that given the real-time information that we are gathering as well as historical information, it is very plausible that we can make an impact on crime and a positive impact on the economy,” said Stephens. “When the shootings took place in Sandy Hook, there were a lot of studies done on active shooting situations and one of those studies found that if we got one of those officers in that school 60 seconds sooner, we could have saved as many as 12 lives.”

“We wanted to figure out how you solve that problem and the only way to solve that problem is through actionable intelligence and the only way to get that form of intelligence is through eyes and ears,” he continued, adding that there were already over 1,000 investors interested in the product.

Some, however, are not as optimistic about the new robots, which can be hired at around $7 an hour via a subscription model, and come in both an indoor and outdoor formats.

“Shoppers like to interact with people and socialize. People come over to me and tell me how nice I am. Robots aren’t comforting. Can the robot find a lost child?” said one security guard based in New York. “[If they get popular], I won’t have a job.”

(You won't have a life pal. - AF)

A drunk San Francisco man was even arrested after he knocked over one of the robots.

“41-year-old Jason Sylvain, approached the K5 while it was patrolling a parking lot. He toppled it over (out of spite or curiosity? We don’t know), inflicting a number of scratches on the bot,” reported the Verge on Wednesday. “The K5 is now back on patrol, while Sylvain has been arrested for ‘prowling and public intoxication.'”

Last year, one of the earlier model robots also ran over a toddler.

“The robot hit my son’s head and he fell down facing down on the floor and the robot did not stop and it kept moving forward,” said the child’s mother in July. “He was crying like crazy and he never cries. He seldom cries.”

Since the incident, the robot has now advanced, and Knightscope reportedly plans to add features such as gun detection, an array of 16 microphones, and IBM Watson integration.

The first widespread use of "in your face" robots was always going to be sock puppets for drone operators in the MIC.

I've said this numerous times on here over the years.

It's the most obvious use case that requires the least amount of programming, and saves the most amount of money.

I don't think it'll change much really. Just have to slightly alter excuse for why it shot your dog.

Knocking one over got Jason Sylvain in trouble.

They paid for RoboCop — but got Bender.

The operators of La Guardia Airport are paying thousands of dollars every month renting a security robot to patrol the airport — but the bot is creeping out women while the crooks look on and laugh.

“It’s upsetting to have that thing creep up on you,” said one female security guard at the airport, adding that she had just fended it off with a luggage cart.

“It’s a pain in the ass. It keeps bothering people.”

The airport deployed the R2-D2-esque Knightscope K5 three months ago to roll around outside Terminal B, recording everything with its four cameras, microphones and sensors.

LaGuardia Gateway Partners, which operates the terminal, wouldn’t say how much it’s paying for the blue-and-white machines, but Knightscope says it typically rents the droids out for between $6,500 and $8,300 a month.

Human guards at the airport say it’s supposed to thwart the scammers and illegal cabdrivers who plague the parking lot — but is more WALL-E than T-1000.

“They just laugh at it. They walk around the bot and take people into their cars. It’s a waste of money,” said one high-level security specialist at the airport.

“They could have renovated three of our bathrooms for the same money. We could have gotten some working sinks.”

Even the hustlers agree.

“I didn’t even notice it. I thought it was sales,” said an illicit cabdriver named Mohammad.

But the Dalek-style:eek: droid does appear to spend its day sniffing around workers and travelers.

The aforementioned female guard blamed male colleagues for hijacking the bot to “get a better look” at her.

Several other female passengers said they were irked when the machine rolled up and ogled them Thursday.

“It was coming right up to me, and at first, I was like, ‘What the freak is that?’ ” said Kris Cabagnot, 31, after the robot sat 10 inches away from her knee for a minute.

Strangely, when people get close to the K5, it says, “You are in my personal space,” according to workers.

FDNY’s new robot dog makes its first appearance in NYC

The FDNY tested a new robot dog the department will use for search-and-rescue missions — offering a first glimpse of the four-legged firefighter, exclusive footage shows.

Smoke eaters took the $75,000 robo-pooch named Spot — which can sniff out dangerous gases and collect structural safety data — for a walk up the stairs of City Hall on Thursday.

Though the mechanical mutt has less charm than a firehouse Dalmatian, it’s built to gauge the integrity of smoldering structures and descend deep underground after a fire or building collapse, the FDNY said.

The department also showcased the bright yellow gadget to Mayor Eric Adams on Thursday, and officers are already being trained on how to use it, according to the fire officials.

The department bought two of the human-controlled robot K9s made by Boston Dynamics — the same firm that leased the NYPD its since-scrapped robot dog last year.

Last year, critics howled that the NYPD’s mechanical pooch was an example of dystopian “surveillance” and overly aggressive policing after footage of the device patrolling a housing complex in the Bronx emerged.

A 7-foot-tall robot at Dallas Love Field is watching for unmasked travelers and curbside loiterers
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/a-7-foot-tall-robot-at-dallas-love-field-is-watching-for-unmasked-travelers-and-curbside-loiterers/ar-AAW0cdz
Kyle Arnold (08 April 2022)

Yes, those 7-foot-tall machines at Dallas Love Field are watching you. They want to make sure you’re wearing a mask if you’re boarding a flight or not parking too long at the curb if you’re picking up a returning traveler.

Love Field is testing out two Security Control Observation Towers at the airport, one near baggage claim and another near security checkpoints, to figure out whether robotic assistants can both help customers get around and warn passengers who are breaking rules. The robots can also airport security and operations in case more help is needed.

While not quite Robocop, the machines, nicknamed SCOT, were installed a month ago to “determine if they are capable of efficiently supplementing current airport operations,” said Love Field spokeswoman Lauren Rounds.

The robots look like many other kiosks at the airport with a touch screen with wayfinding information, maps of parking garages and directions to ride-hailing and shuttle pickup. But SCOT is much smarter, capable of detecting what people are wearing and even whether they’ve got on a face mask.

Airports have been at the forefront of technology, including facial recognition and other biometrics, for years, a trend that worries privacy advocates who say there are few, if any, laws or guidelines about how emerging technology should be used. Amazon took criticism in 2019 after testing its Rekognition technology with police departments before deciding to ban law enforcement from using it two years later.

But private businesses and airports have been more aggressive, and the COVID-19 pandemic has spurred more emphasis on touchless interactions using computers. Fort Worth-based American Airlines uses facial recognition for some customers to check bags and airports such as DFW partner with the U.S. State Department for facial recognition technology for incoming passengers.

Surveillance technology hasn’t stopped progressing because the rest of the world was in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. In fact, more and more institutions and companies are using artificial intelligence to monitor spaces, said Adam Schwartz, an attorney for digital privacy rights group Electronic Frontier Foundation.

“It is concerning that an airport has installed a new system of artificial intelligence,” Schwartz said. “It raises a lot of questions about what that technology is doing.”

Love Field is one of two airports to start using the technology from the company Robotic Assistance Devices, said the company’s CEO and founder Steve Reinharz. The other airport, which Reinharz said he was not able to disclose, uses a related technology from the company in parking lots to detour thefts and break-ins.

“This has more of a full-circle purpose to be a regular, physical deterrent,” he said. “That’s the direction the industry has to go because we have some significant labor issues.”

The robotic SCOT kiosks can detect passengers and behavior based on rules set by each user, such as the airport. For instance, people driving up to the curbside drop-off area late at night might get a series of verbal warnings that escalate in volume and severity. Finally, the machine can call police, notify on-site security or even allow someone to make an announcement remotely.

The machines can also detect flagged individuals based on what they are wearing, especially if they are in areas susceptible to crime, such as baggage claim, Reinharz said.

License plate-scanning cameras can issue warnings to suspicious vehicles or prompt cars to move along if they’ve been waiting too long in passenger pick-up lanes.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company said it also pushed a technology that can detect whether subjects are wearing face masks. Face masks have been a point of contention on airplanes but remain a federal mandate until at least April 18.

“The units currently make scheduled and detection-based announcements directed toward our passengers and visitors,” Rounds said. “Some of these focus on reducing vehicular congestion at our curb using license plate recognition and increasing federal mask compliance using facial recognition technology while others provide standard information.”

The airport isn’t paying for the kiosks now while they test the capabilities, but Dallas Love Field did pay about $4,000 to have them shipped to Texas.

From the text captions in the embedded video (see the tweet at the provided link):

The EU is putting lie-detecting robots on its borders.

The experimental system iBorderCtrl will be launched as a part of a 6-month pilot program and placed on non-EU borders in Hungary, Latvia, and Greece.

The system will ask each traveler questions such as "What is in your luggage?" while simultaneously scanning for their face for "micro-gestures" that indicate if they are lying.

If the bot detects someone is lying, it will alert and send a human agent for further assistance. ["further assistance" LOL - OB]

Officials say the bot will be calibrated based on a person's ethnicity, language, and gender.

More than 700M people enter the EU each year.

Officials hope this new system will make processing more efficient.

It is not designed to block people from entering the country.

Tests of an earlier system saw an accuracy rate of 76%.

Officials say they believe they can get that rate up to 85%.

Should be outlawed by local ordinance as public safety hazards, knocking over kids is all you need. No city councilor is going to lose votes banning these monstrosities and saving jobs for friendly security guards who can give directions.

It's time to vote with your dollars. I always shop at the walgreens before going to the cvs because wg has human cashiers and I want them to keep having jobs. Versus cvs which has mostly check-out machines. I don't even mind standing in line a little longer. I think a lot of millennials doing this too, waiting for the human. It's the way we can all create the world we want to live in. Someday a mall manager will catch on and use it as a marketing point. "All human security no robocops." There are plenty of malls where I can spend my money. If I don't like one I can cross the street.

NEW: New York City mayor Eric Adams has unveiled the Knightscope K5 security robot to patrol the subway station in Times Square.

There’s no plan to solve the migrant crisis but at least you have a robot, NYC!

The 400 pound robot, was leased by the NYPD for 6 months & will cost them $12,500.

“We’re committed to exploring innovative tools to continue to make this city the safest big city in America, and this robot K5, it has the potential to serve as an important tool in our toolbox,” Adams said.

In 2017, the city tried out a similar robot however it decided to take a swim in a fountain and drowned itself.

Clown city.

No hardware robots were involved in this incident (unless you count "policy"-citing cops) - just a software robot in the form of "AI surveillance".
