(CNN) — US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, as a diplomatic rift between the two nations deepens over a chemical attack in Syria.

The meeting is taking place at the Kremlin along with Tillerson's counterpart, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the US State Department and Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed.

The talks come after Lavrov issued Tillerson a warning Wednesday against any further US strikes on the Syrian regime. Russia is Syria's most powerful ally.

The two top diplomats had sat down together earlier in the day to work through the fallout of last week's chemical attack in northwestern Syria, which plunged the old Cold War enemies to a new low.

Moscow and Washington have traded barbs over last week's chemical attack, which killed 89 people, and prompted the US to carry out its first strike against the Syrian regime in the six-year conflict, taking out aircraft and infrastructure at a Syrian military air base.

Just finished. Lavrov gave Tillerson a history lesson in US/Nato war crimes and said to the world that the US needs to present proof in Syria or STFU. He demanded an investigation and said if the UN slow-walks or stymies the investigation, it will only prove that the US and the west have no proof and are not interested in the truth.... man that was a truth bomb

He also said that they have repeatedly asked for proof of Russian hacking allegations and that they have not been shown anything. Then he said that in Syria, the Russians and Syrian government forces had been attacked by chemical weapons and did the tests and presented actual physical proof, but it fell on deaf ears... then he called out any reports by the 'fraudulent white helmets' who have been caught faking reports....

This was a very serious moment in our history folks... I don't think people realize the importance of what just occurred.

I would have loved it if Lavrov rebutted the hacking allegations made by Tillerson with the innumerable instances of the US interfering in the internal affairs of other nations to include cyber warfare, assassination, overt/covert operations, etc.

UN and other international sanctions against US should be beginning well before the regime change ideas get sold on the rest of the world.

UN can censor the US-Israel five nation bloc (includes Micronesia and Guam) and get on with Israel finally being forced to be a signatory
to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to which most all of the planet belongs, and then the UN can enter Israel for nuclear facility inspections.
