American Jewish leaders are pushing President Trump to clarify his views after he reportedly said that recent bomb threats against Jewish centers could have been done in "the reverse” to “make others look bad."
Some in the Jewish community have interpreted the remarks, which Pennsylvania Atty. Gen. Josh Shapiro said came during Trump's meeting Tuesday with attorneys general from around the country, as suggesting that bomb threats (http://www.latimes.com/nation/nationnow/la-na-jewish-cemetery-vandalized-20170227-story.html) leveled at more more than 60 Jewish institutions since last month were made to harm Trump's image or that of his supporters.

Man Arrested in Threats Against Jewish Institutions
Federal prosecutors in Manhattan say Juan Thompson blamed some threats on a former girlfriend

March 3, 2017 A Missouri man whom federal authorities accused of making threats against Jewish organizations in the name of a woman with whom he had a romantic relationship was arrested Friday.
Federal prosecutors in Manhattan charged Juan Thompson, 31 years old, with one count of cyberstalking. They said he made threats to Jewish Community Centers and schools nationwide in the name of the woman, who works at a social-service organization in the...

Fabricating stories Thompson was fired from the online publication The Intercept last year after being accused of fabricating several quotes and creating fake email accounts to impersonate people, including the Intercept's editor-in-chief.
One of the stories involved Dylann Roof, the white shooter of black worshippers at a Charleston, South Carolina, church.
Thompson had written that a cousin named Scott Roof claimed the gunman was angry that a love interest chose a black man over him. A review showed there was no cousin by that name. The story was retracted.
The Intercept wrote Friday it was "horrified" to learn of Thompson's arrest.

According to the criminal complaint, Thompson and the ex-girlfriend, a social worker, broke up last summer.
The following day, her boss received an email purporting to be from a national news organisation saying she had been pulled over for drunken driving. Her company, a nonprofit that works to end homelessness, also got faxes saying she was anti-Semitic.

Maybe mayors should do tours of the Middle East when mosques get vandalized. Maybe judges should visit Africa when blacks get shot by kops.

Governor Cuomo Visits Israel

ALBANY -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Sunday visited Israel on a one-day trip aimed to boost economic ties between the country and New York and pledge solidarity amid growth in anti-Semitic acts.

Cuomo is doing a whirlwind tour of Israel, his second visit there since becoming governor, and he vowed to fight the wave of hate crimes in New York and in the nation.

"You must live by the rules that an abuse to one, and an affront to one, is an affront to all and that large fires start as small fires," Cuomo said at a news conference with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin.

"And we must have zero tolerance for any abuse or discrimination on any fellow human being."

The taxpayer-funded trip, which included six government aides, also included an announcement by Cuomo that Israel and New York will create a commission to strengthen economic and cultural ties.

New York has the largest Jewish population outside Israel, with about 1.7 million Jews.

"Your arrival to Israel in this time is an extremely important signal that the U.S. people and the government will not let anti-Semitism win," said Rivlin, who also praised the support of President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

The visit comes amid a series of anti-Semitic incidents in New York.

Jewish Community Centers in Westchester County, Buffalo, Syracuse and Albany were among those that were hit with bomb threats.

A Jewish cemetery in Rochester was hit with vandalism, as was one Saturday night in Brooklyn.

Cuomo has formed a State Police task force to investigate the hate crimes, created a hotline to report incidents and offered a $5,000 reward for any tips that lead to a conviction.

He is also proposing a $25 million fund to bolster security at religious schools and facilities.

The Democratic governor is expected to seek re-election next year and is considered a potential presidential candidate in 2020. He was first elected in 2011.

Cuomo was scheduled to meet later Sunday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"The relationship between the Jewish community and the people of the state of New York is built on mutual support and respect," Cuomo said.

"It is built on love, and that will not change."

House anti-Semitism task force urges Trump to set up interagency mechanism

WASHINGTON (JTA) — A bipartisan House task force on anti-Semitism is urging President Donald Trump to set up an interagency mechanism to tackle the issue in the wake of waves of bomb threats against Jewish institutions and several cemetery vandalism attacks.

“Similar to the interagency task force you proposed for dismantling criminal cartels, this instrument, led by the Attorney General, could bring together the Departments of Justice – including the FBI – Homeland Security, Education, and State, and the Director of National Intelligence, to help synchronize governmental responses to anti-Semitic threats,” said the letter sent Thursday by the task force, which brings together some of the most senior members of both parties in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Particularly with recent public reports that these threats may be originating overseas, we must engage all agencies responsible for our nation’s security from threats emanating at home and abroad,” it said. “The range of participating agencies can also improve classification of and responses to attacks, and ensure Jewish communities are fully briefed and prepared to respond appropriately to threats and attacks.”

Among the eight members of the task force are Reps. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee; Ted Deutch, D-Fla., the top Democrat on its Middle East subcommittee; Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., the chairwoman of the Middle East subcommittee; Chris Smith, R-N.J., the chairman of its human rights subcommittee; Kay Granger, R-Texas, the chairwoman of the foreign operations subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee, and Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., the top Democrat on the Appropriations Committee.

A number of the task force members released the letter in a news conference in the Capitol on Thursday morning.

Deutch, who initiated the letter, said he appreciated Trump’s remarks in his speech Tuesday to a joint meeting of Congress addressing the recent spike in anti-Semitic threats, but said a coordinated effort would be better positioned to form a comprehensive response to the bomb threats, the acts of vandalism, any acts of violence and the online harassment, as well as whether there is an international element to the threat..

“There are so many images of preschool kids walking out of schools with their teachers, holding their hands,” he said, referring to evacuations of Jewish community centers that have massively disrupted Jewish communal life in recent weeks.

Deutch said the task force had asked for a briefing on the issue, but had yet to hear back from the administration.

“We need to do more to combat it,” Smith said. “It’s a very quick movement from threats and bomb threats to actual acts.”

Deutch added: “The unease, the fear in the Jewish community is so real and so palpable.”

Engel said he felt for the first time in his life unease as a Jew living in New York.

“I’ve never seen it this great,” he said.

Lowey, whose district neighbors Engel’s, said it was “simply unacceptable” for American Jews to live in fear.

Task force members also called on the Trump administration to rebuff reports that it was planning to end the State Department office of a special envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitism overseas.

Smith, who authored the 2004 amendment creating the office, said the Trump administration should understand that its existence was required according to statute. He cautioned the president not to dilute the position by combining it with another.

“This isn’t a matter of ‘the president may do this,’ this is a statute created by law,’ the New Jersey lawmaker said. “My concern is that it should not be double hatted,” or made into a part-time post for an official handling another area.

To be fair, when Hillary responds to such cases out of abundance of compassion and for no political benefits agenda whatsoever, she seems to start with assumption that Trump supporters are behind all such acts and could not have possiblly known that her own supporters would be implicated in some high profile cases like this.

Never heard of these people, but looked them up. I see Majority Report is an internet radio program hosted by liberal Jewish guy named Sam Seder. So you possibly found this video somewhat randomly. Maybe it's something you happened to catch the other day and remembered it for this thread. Or, maybe it's a program to which you regularly listen. What are the odds.

Yes there are still questions about this whole episode , ADL and media seemed to have focussed on this arrest because this has been the only one made so far after days of evacs and fear.

http://www.newsweek.com/juan-thompson-jcc-bomb-suspect-college-564126

In college, Juan Thompson surrounded himself with Jewish friends and a Jewish girlfriend. He spent time with her family. He spoke favorably about Israel, not always a popular thing to do at Vassar College, a liberal arts school in New York state where some students have embraced the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement.
But the FBI is now accusing Thompson of threatening to blow up Jewish Community Centers and the Anti-Defamation League headquarters. He allegedly wrote that the bombs would create a “Jewish Newtown,” referring to the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

Jewish institutions have already received more than 100 bomb threats in 2017, and Thompson is the first suspect whom authorities have named publicly. Vandals also have toppled hundreds of headstones across three Jewish cemeteries.

http://s.newsweek.com/sites/www.newsweek.com/files/styles/embed-lg/public/2017/03/05/0305juanthompsoncollege.jpg Officials from the Anti-Defamation League held a news conference on March 3 after the arrest of Juan Thompson for allegedly sending bomb threats to Jewish institutions. People who knew Thompson at Vassar College say he had Jewish friends and a Jewish girlfriend.

US-Israeli Citizen New Suspect Behind Jewish Community Center Threats

Cortney O'Brien
Mar 23, 2017 9:32 AM

Authorities have arrested a 19-year-old dual U.S.-Israeli citizen whom they have reason to believe is behind the recent threats on Jewish community centers across the U.S., the Jerusalem Post has learned (http://www.jpost.com/Israel-News/Dual-US-Israeli-citizen-behind-most-JCC-bomb-threat-calls-484990).
As of Thursday, with a gag order on the probe lifted by the Rishon Lezion Magistrate’s Court, which extended his detention, sources indicate that most of the cases of threats against Jewish communities and organizations, though not all, led investigators back to Israel.

The male suspect reportedly used computer programs to hide his location and has made similar threats in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.
In recent weeks, over 100 threats (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2017/03/07/as-more-jewish-facilities-get-threats-senators-ask-trump-administration-for-swift-action/?utm_term=.2c4e71b9e052) have been leveled against JCCs.
