WEST PALM BEACH The microscope on St. Mary’s Medical Center’s pediatric cardiac surgery program tightened its focus on Friday with federal and state agencies saying they are investigating nine infant deaths at the hospital.

The federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said it was launching an investigation after CNN reported (http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/01/health/st-marys-medical-center/) on Monday that the mortality rate at St. Mary’s 4-year-old program dwarfed the national average.

“We take these allegations very seriously. CMS is actively investigating these complaints,” CMS spokesman Aaron Albright said.

Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration said it already had been looking at St. Mary’s, echoing CMS, in a statement, saying it also takes the CNN report “extremely seriously.”

“We have conducted five site visits over the last six months and will continue to work with our partner agencies to hold this hospital accountable to the patients they serve,” the agency said in a release.

Certainly, it’s been a rough week for the hospital known for its trauma care. Advocates were piling on and law firms publicly trolled for clients to file lawsuits against St. Mary’s.

St. Mary’s said it hasn’t been contacted by federal officials but will cooperate with an investigation.

The Tenet Healthcare-owned hospital, on 45th Street in West Palm Beach, refuted CNN’s arithmetic (http://www.mypalmbeachpost.com/news/news/local/cnn-puts-st-marys-infant-heart-surgery-deaths-at-3/nmS5P/?icmp=pbp_internallink_textlink_apr2013_pbpstubtom ypbp_launch#a9feffc6.3930260.735754), saying the mortality rate for such pediatric cardiovascular programs are weighted toward the risk of the surgical procedures. Many of the infants featured in the CNN story underwent high-level surgeries — surgeries the news network reported St. Mary’s was ill-equipped to perform because its doctors lacked sufficient experience.

The CNN report included scathing comments from physicians who participated in a peer review of the program, as well as heart-wrenching personal stories from the families of the infants who died or were left handicapped.

There is a growing dispute over the mortality rates used by CNN.

The news organization reported St. Mary’s mortality rate was 12.5 percent derived from six deaths in 48 open heart surgeries on children from 2011 to 2013. CNN put the national average mortality at 3.3 percent, citing The Society for Thoracic Surgeons (http://www.sts.org/).

St. Mary’s CEO Davide Carbone told CNN raw mortality data “does not give proper context for the complexity and severity of each case, which could potentially lead to providing misleading information to consumers.”

The hospital said its mortality rate for the program is consistent with the state average compiled by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration.

The Society for Thoracic Surgeons on Friday could not confirm the 3.3 percent national average cited by CNN. But all of its mortality rates are weighted to include the risk of the operations. The CNN figure for St. Mary’s is not weighted.

“I can guarantee that any mortality rate that STS reports is risk-adjusted,” said Cassie McNulty, a spokeswoman for the organization.

I tend toward cheering on CNN here... in as much as no man or institution has a property right in his reputation.
