12 refugees detained under ban after Trump's order; one released as protests grow (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/01/28/12-refugees-detained-under-ban-after-trumps-order-one-released-as-protests-grow.html)

Twelve refugees were detained at JFK Airport within hours of President Trump's order
restricting immigration from seven majority-Muslim nations --
as hundreds of protesters amassed at the busy airport
and Democratic leaders reacted with outrage.

One of the Iraqis, Hameed Jhalid Darweesh, 53, was released by midday Saturday.
“I suffered to move here, to get my family here …. I can’t go back,” Darweesh said shortly after his release, according to the New York Post.
Asked if he’d be killed in Iraq, he answered: “Yes, yes.”

Hameed Khalid Darweesh, an Army interpreter in Iraq, had been stopped
as he traveled with his wife and three kids when agents pulled him aside,
according to the New York Times.

The fate of the other Iraqi detainee, Haider Sameer Abdulkhaleq Alshawi, 33, was unclear.
So was the fate of 10 other refugees, whose nationalities were not immediately known.

Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-Manhattan) and Nydia Velazquez (D-Brooklyn
announced the number of refugees held at the airport.
“This should not happen in America. We shouldn’t have to demand the release of refugees one by one,”
the two members of Congress said in a statement.

Federal judge blocks Trump immigration order: report (http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/316714-federal-judge-blocks-trump-immigration-ban-nationwide)

The move marks the first successful legal challenge to the Trump administration, reportedly dealing with a portion of Trump's order handed down Friday to ban many refugees and people from majority-Muslim countries.

Trump's order bars Syrian refugees indefinitely and halts the resettlement of all refugees for four months for the administration to review the vetting process.

Admission will resume only after vetting has been deemed "adequate" by the secretary of State, the secretary of Homeland Security and Director of National Intelligence.

The order also denies entry for 90 days for individuals from seven predominantly Muslims countries: Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Libya and Yemen.

Federal judge grants temporary stay to allow those with visas to remain, 10 still detained at JFK (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/01/28/custom-officials-enforcing-trump-immigration-ban-at-us-airports.html)

A federal judge in Brooklyn, New York issued an emergency stay on Saturday that temporarily blocks the U.S. government from sending people out of the country after they have landed at a U.S. airport with valid visas.

The American Civil Liberties Union estimates the stay will affect 100 to 200 people detained at U.S. airports or intransit, but government lawyers could not confirm that number.

The ruling by Judge Ann Donnelly of the U.S. District Courtfor the Eastern District of New York came during a hearing called after President Donald Trump issued an executive order blocking people from seven Muslim-majority from entering the United States and putting a temporary halt to refugee admissions

Twelve refugees were detained at JFK Airport within hours of Trump's order restricting immigration from seven majority-Muslim nations -- but two were released later in the day -- as hundreds of protesters continued to amass at the busy airport throughout the day and into the evening.

OP ed...

Liberals think that the federal order ends the ban. Wrong.

what the judge's order actually means:
Order only allows entry for
(1) those in transit
or
(2) already arrived in the US

They will allow current holders, but will stop issuing greencards to those countries.

I thought a stay was granted for the dozen or so detainees that were mid flight while the EO was signed?

A stay was granted, but many people believe the ban was overturned, it wasn't.

►Homeland Security has NOT seen copy of emergency stay - Senior official / Reuters

I was wondering the same thing too, how the hell did his edict come to affect people with green cards? and Iraqi translators for that matter. The last time I witnessed govt this fast and efficient was on 9/11 :)

All he had to do was shut down the departments in the US govt agencies that deal with transporting refugees to the US and stop issuing new VISAs to any body from the banned countries.

Department of Homeland Security vows to enforce Donald Trump's travel bans, despite court order (http://archive.is/oAOj0)

“President Trump’s Executive Orders remain in place - prohibited travel will remain prohibited,
and the US government retains its right to revoke visas at any time
if required for national security or public safety.”

White House officials also insisted there was nothing in the court order
which impeded the executive order and it remained in full effect.

Regardless of their legal status in the US, citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia or Yemen
have now been barred from entering the country even if they have the correct documentation.

Even green card holders - legal permanent US residents who may have lived in the country for years -
will need additional screening before they are allowed back into America
if they were away at the time of the ban.
Re-entry was not guaranteed but was “pending” on vetting.

Senior Trump administration officials Stephen Miller and Steve Bannon overruled
an initial DHS interpretation that green card holders would be exempt from the order,
according to US broadcaster CNN.

The DHS also said the Executive Orders were
a “first step towards re-establishing control over America's borders and national security”.

Later in its statement, the department attempted to strike a conciliatory tone,
saying that “less than one per cent” of an estimated 325,000 air travellers
were “inconvenienced” because of “enhanced security measures”.

“These individuals went through enhanced security screenings
and are being processed for entry to the United States,
consistent with our immigration laws and judicial orders,” the statement said.

“No foreign national in a foreign land, without ties to the United States,
has any unfettered right to demand entry into the United States
or to demand immigration benefits in the United States."

“The Department of Homeland Security will comply with judicial orders;
faithfully enforce our immigration laws,
and implement President Trump’s Executive Orders
to ensure that those entering the United States
do not pose a threat to our country
or the American people.”

Trump’s Executive Order on Refugees — Separating Fact from Hysteria (http://www.nationalreview.com/article/444370/donald-trump-refugee-executive-order-no-muslim-ban-separating-fact-hysteria)

No Refugees at all 4 120 days...
... First, the order temporarily halts refugee admissions for 120 days to improve the vetting process,
then caps refugee admissions at 50,000 per year.

Ban ALL passport holders/green card - visas / these 7 countries for 90 days
... Second, the order imposes a temporary, 90-day ban
on people entering the U.S. from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.
These are countries either torn apart by jihadist violence or under the control of hostile, jihadist governments.

It's not a ban on Muslims. It's a 90-day ban on travelers with passports from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen

No Syrian Refugees... NONE
... Third, Trump’s order also puts an indefinite hold on admission of Syrian refugees to the United States
“until such time as I have determined that sufficient changes have been made to the USRAP
to ensure that admission of Syrian refugees is consistent with the national interest.”

Religious Preference
... Fourth, there is a puzzling amount of outrage over Trump’s directive to
“prioritize refugee claims made by individuals on the basis of religious-based persecution,
provided that the religion of the individual is a minority religion in the individual’s country of nationality.”
In other words,
once refugee admissions resume, members of minority religions
may well go to the front of the line.
In some countries, this means Christians and Yazidis.
In others, it can well mean Muslims.

►Trudeau says Canada will take refugees banned by U.S. (really Justin? Think.)

►Boris Johnson Verified account
We will protect the rights and freedoms of UK nationals home and abroad. Divisive and wrong to stigmatize because of nationality
(Pander much Boris? )

►Merkel calls US travel ban unjustified.

Note that I am not a a fan of Trump and am ambivalent about the ban.

Protest Grows ‘Out of Nowhere’ at Kennedy Airport After Iraqis Are Detained

Peaceful demonstrations began Saturday afternoon at Kennedy International Airport in Queens,
where nearly a dozen travelers had been detained, an airport official said.

Just past 3 p.m., a man with a social media megaphone gave it a blow.
“Everybody in NYC area — head to JFK Terminal 4 NOW!” Michael Moore said on Twitter.
“Big anti-Trump protest forming out of nowhere!”

People were pouring in.
Photos traveled far and wide on social media and on cable networks like CNN, which reported live from the protest.

My wife's brother went. It was Muslims not happy with "Muslim ban". Muslims and liberals aligned with them. It's a non starter because Muslim community in US is tiny and very localized. Such as NYC.

So listen less to your liberal friends and listen more to others.

I remember Syria protests those were much more powerful. It wasn't the Muslim community herding all they have to one air port. It was on every street small groups around the entire tri state area. And it was under Obama.

George Soros' should be arrested for inciting violence.

ETA:
Soros Funding Airport Protests, Ban Lawsuits Against Trump's Order

Billionaire liberal activist George Soros is helping fund the airport protests against President Donald Trump's executive order to ban refugees from war-torn Syria indefinitely and suspend visas from seven countries for at least 30 days, as PJ Media reported Sunday.

This Soros connection, including reports of funding lawsuits to block the orders, begs the question: Are these protesters being paid to be there?

The website's Debra Heine posted tweets of airport protests against the action, which was granted a stay Saturday night by a New York Judge amid an ACLU fight to block the immigration ban and deportation of stranded travelers from those locations wanting to enter the U.S.

This tweet's photo showed protesters fighting deportations, ironically, by saying the first lady should be deported.

People stopped, detained, and interrogated for committing no crimes or being accused of committing or planning one while travelling with legal visas and documents. This is libertarian? The police state grows. And this is just the beginning.

The beginning?! Growing?! It's been happening for a long time.

It's funny how the liberal gets bent out of shape on 4th amendment issues only in certain circumstances. Liberty people speak about these issues all the time. Where were you when your candidate Obama was president? One example below--internal border patrol roadblocks.

Terry gives it right back to the rookie border guard and schools her.

"Am I being detained?" LOL

WESTCHESTER, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Thousands of protesters have descended on Los Angeles International for the second day in a row on Sunday, expressing their opposition to President Donald Trump's sweeping immigration order.

Officials estimated nearly 4,000 protesters demonstrated at the Tom Bradley International Terminal, causing disruptions to travelers attempting to enter and leave the airport.

LIBERALS ARE GETTING DENIED INTO CANADA BECAUSE OF STRICT IMMIGRATION LAWS!

http://dailycaller.com/2017/01/26/libs-who-want-to-move-to-canada-blocked-by-its-strict-immigration-policies/#ixzz4X88M0nYP

Liberals seeking to move to Canada because they are unhappy with the election results are finding that Canada won’t take them because its immigration policies exclude those who won’t contribute to the economy.

One of the policies of President Donald Trump that has some Democrats claiming they want to jump ship is his pledge to limit immigration from people whose lives in America would be dependent on welfare. Trump promises “extreme vetting” before accepting immigrants or refugees.

But Democrats looking to move from the U.S. to Australia, Canada and other wealthy English-speaking nations are learning that those nations already have similar policies.

A top law firm known for obtaining Canadian visas for U.S. citizens says there are three main ways to get in: by having in-demand job skills, by owning a business or having a high net worth, or by having relatives already there.

Canada’s official immigration page also sets a high bar, listing opportunities to “immigrate as a skilled worker,” “immigrate by starting a business and creating jobs” or “immigrate by investing in the Canadian economy.” The website had so many visitors immediately after Trump’s win that the server crashed.

It also maintains a refugee category, but targets people who have already been displaced “outside their home country,” and not those who want to move from their home country to Canada.

Canada is willing only to be a last resort for refugees; such candidates are not eligible if they “have another durable solution for protection, such as an offer to be resettled in another country.”

Even then, the nation known for its hockey and its Maple syrup then asks individual Canadians to pick up the bill, by either voluntarily funding the program or taking refugees in to their own homes. Individuals must be “selected as a government-assisted or privately sponsored refugee, or have the funds needed to support” themselves and any dependents after they “arrive in Canada.”

Canada does have a special program for Syrian refugees and accepted 40,000 since November, 2015, about four times as many as the U.S. during the same time-span under former President Barack Obama.

As one hysterical liberal lamented on Facebook, “What are the actual implications of these Executive Douche Orders? Should I just pack my bags and move to Canada?” After researching the Canadian immigration system, the individual posted that he had determined that “ironically,” as an artist who could not afford to buy property and only rented a loft in Brooklyn, Canada had no desire in taking him in.

Immigration rules for Australia and similar nations are comparable, with strict rules focused on accepting people that are a net value-added to their economy.

Canada’s rules could be one reason Al Sharpton — who has failed to pay debts, including taxes — reneged on a promise to move there following Trump’s win. Lena Dunham also backtracked on her pledge to relocate, in spite of her assets.

Except for what you posted above,I have not found any reference in the media about Syrians being responsible for this. Media pushing Islamophobia narrative hard. It will be quickly extinguished if it turns out to really be Syrian Immigrants, as it would throw water on the current protests.

Spicer: 'What happened if we didn't act and somebody was killed?'

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on Monday defended the President Trump's executive order, saying the administration needed to act now to "protect the future."

"There was a very short period of time in which we had something to execute that would ensure that the people of the United States were safe," Spicer said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"What happened if we didn't act and somebody was killed?" he asked. "We act now to protect the future."

Spicer also said "everybody that needed to be consulted" on the executive order was "consulted."

"Everybody understands what the president was doing and why he was doing it and everybody that needed to be consulted was," Spicer said.

"Everyone that needed to be part of the process was consulted."

The president's executive order signed Friday bars Syrian refugees indefinitely and halts the country's refugee resettlement program for four months. It also denies entry for 90 days to people from seven predominately Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Libya.

After the order was signed, reports emerged of refugees being detained upon arrival at U.S. airports and new details continued to surface about the exact scope of who would be impacted by the order.

Protests broke out Saturday and Sunday in cities across the country and some lawmakers raised concerns about the order and its implementation.
