The coming week promises to be a good one, as candidates are jockeying for cash at the half year mark (coinciding with a reporting period) and Thompson's much anticipated launch date nears around Independence Day.

As one might expect with such anticipation, the week saw more movement than usual. On the Republican side, Rudy Giuliani kept his edge over Fred Thompson, though both improved their standing in the Republican race, now 34.2% and 33.4%, respectively. After those two sits a very stable Mitt Romney and a fading John McCain.

THE FADING JOHN McCAIN

As for John McCain, the likely entry of Fred Thompson in the coming days seems to compromise his chances in fundraising, though McCain admits it has always been difficult to raise money. According to one source,
McCain warned that his second-quarter numbers may not be much better than his first-quarter results
To be fair, he is not the only one tempering expectations about the fundraising effort in the second quarter. McCain says he won't drop out of the race if the numbers are low, but we question his viability given his "issue baggage" on Iraq and immigration.

If McCain's rating in our survey drops below 5%, he would be only the third individual in our weekly survey to chart above 20%, then fade below 5%. The others were George Allen and Mark Warner.

Ron Paul closed above the 3% threshold for inclusion this week, so we are including him in our official rankings. We anticipated his inclusion last week. We expect we will provide a brief profile on Paul in the coming days, as we have done with other candidates.

This is great news to see this. Ron Paul is finally a "frontrunner" at least in the eyes of this site.

However I have no idea how these rankings are calculated. Any idea where they come up with these numbers? I don't know what they mean.
