The Trump lobbying boom starts

In the last week of the Obama administration, lobbying firms have filed 69 new lobbying registrations. Some of these are new lobbying operations set up specifically for the Trump era.

Jim Massie, founder of the Alpine Group lobbying firm, launched his own practice "in anticipation of the new Trump Administration and the 115th Congress." Jim Massie & Associates registered five energy clients this week, including the National Biodiesel Board. Trump has generally favored biofuel subsidies, but surrounding himself with oil industry types has made the ethanol and biodiesel lobby worry.

Republican former Congressman Buck McKeon has been hired by Democrat-heavy Glover Park Group to lobby on the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA). McKeon has Saudi Arabia as a client.

Silver Point Capital, a well-known hedge fund, just signed K Street giant Hogan Lovells, and former Eric Cantor aide Aaron Cutler to lobby on International Tax Matters.

There are dozens of other new registrations.

This follows Trump campaign aides Corey Lewandowski and Jim Murphy jumping to K Street, and one lobbyist declaring himself the "Trump Whisperer."

These will be dynamic days on K Street. Probably plenty of Democratic lobbyists will wind things down as their connections lose importance, even while Obama administration staffers cash out. Meanwhile, expect plenty of other Republican public servants to monetize that service in the coming weeks.
