New Arms Race? Trump Tweets US Must ‘Greatly’ Expand Nuclear Arsenal

“Until such times as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes,” President-elect Donald Trump tweeted Thursday, the US should be happy to spend money on more doomsday weapons. Trump campaigned to put domestic policy at the forefront of his administration’s goals and championed a non-interventionist foreign policy. In a complete reversal, Trump advocates the US enter a nuclear arms race, despite having an arsenal that could destroy human civilization many times over.

It is not as though America’s Cold War stockpile has been collecting dust on the shelf. Recent nuclear modernization efforts have included refurbishing and extending the life of old warheads, building new strategic delivery systems, and funding new production facilities.

And despite President Obama’s quest for a nuclear-free world, the US has recapitalized its nuclear enterprise with billions of dollars. The US has 441 Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic missiles alone, according to a report from the Arms Control Association, and the next US President is now suggesting that America needs better, and more, nuclear weapons. Nuclear-armed ICBMs are just one way to mercilessly incinerate entire ecosystems of human, animal, and plant life. The nuclear modernization program in the US also includes fortifying submarines and stealth bombers with atomic weapons, according to the report.

Between 2015-2024, the US is projected to send $348 billion of taxpayer money on its nuclear forces, the Congressional Budget Office reports.

Under President Obama’s watch, the US developed new “smaller” precision guided nukes with a detonation radius that can be scaled up or down as required by the mission. Critics within the US military worry that focused, targeted strikes with a controlled blast-radius will make nukes more tempting to use.

I'm pretty sure that we have enough that if we just exploded every one in our own back yard we'd kill off 99% of humanity.

I'm pretty sure that we have enough that if we just exploded every one in our own back yard we'd kill off 99% of humanity. I guess Trump could go full supervillian- threaten to nuke yellowstone's supervolcano. It's always the craziest person that wins the fight I guess maybe that's why we installed a crazy person to deal with the biggest nuclear standoff since the cold war. Those doomsday Ron Paul supporters are seeming more sane by the day.

Well, I kinda like your plan. We could reduce the arsenal to one. Proclaim that if we are attacked we will cause the extinction of humanity and let others fight to keep us safe.

New Arms Race?

yes

Less than one tenth of the US military budget.

Less than one tenth of the US military budget. Which would be a concern if Japan was trying to counter our military, but explicitly they said they want to counter North Korea and China. Plus I bet you would be surprised how efficient you can be if you are just countering someone else's military not trying to police the whole world.

Our printing presses are vastly superior to foreign knock-offs.

Well, if THEY are paying for it then I have no problem. In fact they should. "Occupied" Japan ran from '45-'51, supposedly. Seems we are still occupying them.

Our printing presses are vastly superior to foreign knock-offs.
Fake news says let it be a printing race, we will outmatch them at every pass.

The "Morning Joe" co-host said Trump privately told her he is confident that the U.S. can “outlast” any other country.“Let it be an arms race, we will outmatch them at every pass ... and outlast them all,” Brzezinski recounted Trump saying.
Transition officials did not immediately respond to requests to confirm the report.
Co-host Joe Scarborough said that Brzezinski was hoping to get clarification about Trump’s tweet from Thursday in which he said that the U.S. should “strengthen and expand” its nuclear capabilities.

Nuclear weapons don't invade small countries at a whim, engage in police actions, and conduct nation building in the name of liberal democracy. Sure, go ahead and make dramatic cuts in conventional invading forces and build bright, shiny new precision nukes.

Putin seems unfazed:

Putin shrugs off Trump's nuclear plans, says Democrats sore losers (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?505700-Putin-says-ready-to-visit-US-calls-democrats-sore-losers&p=6388487&viewfull=1#post6388487)Russia's Vladimir Putin said on Friday he was unfazed by President-elect Donald Trump's plans to boost the U.S. nuclear arsenal, praising Trump for being in touch with U.S. public opinion while branding the Democrats sore election losers.

It would probably be safe to assume that this is one of many big government programs that "experts" are telling Trump are necessary, then Trump paraphrases it as if it's a big revelation from him (talking tough).

Trump would actually have to terminate programs to stop the modernization of nuclear weapons. The ball has been rolling on this for a long time...

Obama has authorized an unprecedented modernization of the U.S. nuclear arsenal that will cost $1 trillion over the next three decades, according to several estimates.

They make it easier to do all those things.

One nuke flies and the whole planet dies. It's been this way for decades. More nukes will have no military effect except to make Iran, N Korea et al want them more.

This is another spending program pure and simple. Trump wants to spend us into prosperity. He never discusses spending cuts.

Before it's over with (if it's not happening already), USA and Russia will be playing 3D chess against each other, not cooperatively as trumpies assume.

A bit late for that, seeing how the Chinese are buying up everything in this country that isn't nailed down.

Trump's military and banker advisors clearly subscribe to the conclusions of the Iron Mountain Report regarding military spending.

"There’s a card game going on at the table, but it’s only a charade. The goal is to get people in the room on your side, have them peek at the opponents’ hands, and signal you. However, there’s no telling who’s on whose side. The signs may be fake, or you might read an opponents signs and change your hand. In the right conditions, you can convince the enemy spy to betray his side and join yours."

Final part of Trump's quote... ..the part the media ignored:

.@NBCNews purposely left out this part of my nuclear qoute: "until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes." Dishonest!

Wrong. M.A.D. and nuclear winter are myths.

Wrong again. You can always expect all nations to jostle and tussle. Trump knows this, everyone knows this.

He never discusses spending cuts.

Except making Lockheed-Martin to "aggressively reduce" the price of the f-35 program ALREADY, and the whole Air Force one price thing with Boeing.

He has also talked about the 6 trillion in useless wars to start with...

...and his cabinet is not exactly friendly to some of the offices they head.
