Trump’s national security adviser shared secrets without permission, files show

A secret U.S. military investigation in 2010 determined that Michael T. Flynn, the retired Army general tapped to serve as national security adviser in the Trump White House, “inappropriately shared” classified information with foreign military officers in Afghanistan, newly released documents show.

Although Flynn lacked authorization to share the classified material, he was not disciplined or reprimanded after the investigation concluded that he did not act “knowingly” and that “there was no actual or potential damage to national security as a result,” according to Army records obtained by The Washington Post under the Freedom of Information Act.

[Read the military investigation into Michael Flynn in 2010]

Flynn has previously acknowledged that he was investigated while serving as the U.S. military intelligence chief in Afghanistan for sharing secrets with British and Australian allies there. But he has dismissed the case as insignificant and has given few details.

The Army documents provide the first official account of the case, but they are limited in scope because the investigation itself remains classified. Former U.S. officials familiar with the matter said that Flynn was accused of telling allies about the activities of other agencies in Afghanistan, including the CIA.

The Army files call into question Flynn’s prior assertion that he had permission to share the sensitive information.

During the presidential race, Flynn campaigned vigorously for Republican nominee Donald Trump and drew attention for his scalding attacks against Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton for mishandling classified material. Clinton was investigated by the FBI for allowing classified information to be transmitted on her private email server when she ran the State Department. No charges were filed against the former secretary of state, but the issue dogged her for more than a year.

[Trump’s national security adviser says he’s ready to fight another world war]

At the Republican National Convention in July, Flynn called on Clinton to drop out of the race for putting “our nation’s security at extremely high risk with her careless use of a private email server.” He egged on the partisan crowd in chants of “lock her up,” adding: “If I, a guy who knows this business, if I did a tenth, a tenth of what she did, I would be in jail today.”

Flynn did not respond to requests for comment.

The office of the Army’s Judge Advocate General released a four-page summary of the investigation into Flynn in response to The Post’s Freedom of Information Act request for records of any misconduct allegations involving the retired three-star general.

The U.S. military opened the investigation into Flynn in 2010 after receiving a complaint from an unnamed Navy intelligence specialist, according to the documents. The intelligence officer charged that Flynn violated rules by “inappropriately” sharing secrets with “various foreign military officers and/or officials in Afghanistan.”

Who is Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn?
PBS NewsHour-Nov 18, 2016
In 2012, he was tapped by President Obama to serve as director of the Defense Intelligence .

Was he Obama's advisor at the time or Obama appointed him later?

Is this "secret" dirt on then Obama advisor coming out now because he yesterday called CIA a "political arm"of Obama administration or some other reason Washington "wrote 27 editorials to support Iraq war" Post neocons are leaking this today?

He also said Obama never met him for intel briefings .

What a horrible lapse of judgement commander in chief displayed in 2012, should he step down because of this huge blunder or should Congress take action (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?417115-Would-you-support-Obama-impeachment&) to restore sanctity of secret leaks to media?

That might be the wise course of action given the gravity of the situation.

But OTOH, he just ordered "deep dive" pizza, will that fall in Trump's lap if he stepped down immediately?

Where did you get this idea from? :confused:Well, I see what CPUd has posted in this thread, which seems to be about LTG Flynn. Next to it is your post about CPUd's forum activities being inconsistent with those of a liberty supporter.

Am I missing something? Perhaps you're referring to something CPUd did in another thread but chose to post in this one instead?

Michael Flynn quietly deletes fake news tweet about Hillary Clinton's involvement in sex crimes

(CNN)Incoming National Security Adviser Michael Flynn has quietly deleted a tweet with a link to a fake news story about Hillary Clinton's involvement in sex crimes with minors.

In the since-deleted tweet from Nov. 2, Flynn linked to a story on TruePundit.com that falsely claimed the FBI investigation into Anthony Weiner had turned up evidence "to put Hillary (Clinton) and her crew away for life."

"U decide - NYPD Blows Whistle on New Hillary Emails: Money Laundering, Sex Crimes w Children, etc...MUST READ!" Flynn's tweet read.

The tweet received renewed scrutiny in recent weeks after a different fake news story about Clinton's connection to a underage sex ring at a DC pizzeria led a man to show up at the restaurant with a gun. Flynn's son, also named Michael Flynn, was dismissed from Donald Trump's transition team after peddling the pizzeria conspiracy on his Twitter account.
The deleted tweet can still be viewed on the Internet archive.

CNN's KFile could not identify any other tweets deleted by Flynn. He did not immediately return a request for comment.
Retired Lt. Gen. Flynn has proven to be a controversial choice for Trump. He has tweeted that fear of Muslims is rational and, as CNN's KFile previously reported, he has shared fake news stories and interacted with conspiratorial figures on social media.

In one such instance, from July, Flynn shared a tweet that falsely claimed Clinton wore a hijab in solidarity with Islamic terrorists. In another tweet from October, Flynn retweeted a baseless claim that the UN was attempting to create a one world church that prohibited Christianity.

In speeches he has given throughout the year, he has claimed without evidence that Sharia law was being implemented in states and that Arabic signs on the border guided potential terrorists into the US.

Can Trump Follow Through On His Campaign Promises?

President-elect Donald Trump made a variety of lofty promises during his campaign as part of a pledge to “make America great again.” The Onion looks at several of these promises and evaluates whether Trump will be willing or able to follow through on them.

Scrap The Iran Nuclear Deal: Most experts have warned that such a measure would be an incredibly short-sighted and dangerous move, so it’s pretty much a given

Repeal And Replace Obamacare: This is well within reach, as Trump has congressional support to repeal Obamacare and is poised to easily replace it with utter chaos

Imprison Hillary Clinton: Although he’s walked back this promise in recent weeks, Americans are ready for this argument to reenter the national dialogue as soon as Trump needs to deflect attention from a devastating misstep or calamitous scandal

Eliminate Hanger Steak From The Menu: Trump is already throwing the full weight of his office behind removing this lesser cut of beef from all domestic restaurant offerings

Bring Jobs Back From China: It’s unlikely that Trump will allow foreign jobs to come into the country under his strict immigration policy

Create A Muslim Registry: Instead of bullying the Muslim-American community by following through on this specific campaign promise, Trump will likely find it much more effective to just let it hang over their heads indefinitely

Make Mexico Pay For Border Wall: Look, he said he’s gonna do it, and he’s gonna do it, okay? If you don’t like it, you can go back to your libtard PC safe space. MAGA!

Get Munfordville, KY Resident Jason Hough, 38, A Job: Time will tell if this promise, which Trump made only in Hough’s mind, will be kept

Unify The Shards Of The Dark Crystal: Being that Trump is not a Gelfling as the prophecy foretold, it’s unlikely that he’ll make any headway on this

Trump Security Aide Flynn Has Deep Ties to Defense Contractors

Donald Trump’s selection of Michael Flynn as national security adviser caused concern last month when it was revealed that Flynn represented a business with ties to the Turkish government while getting classified briefings during the campaign. He promised to sever those ties before Inauguration Day.

But Flynn has other potential conflicts. Just last week, he was re-elected to a paid position on the board of a surveillance drone company with Department of Defense contracts, federal filings show. And while taking part in the classified briefings for Trump last August, he revamped his consulting company -- Flynn Intel Group, or FIG -- by adding one senior executive whose firm does extensive cybersecurity work for government agencies and another who was soliciting defense department aviation contracts.

Public records, government contracts and documents posted online by Flynn and his partners show that they have vied in recent months for federal contracts to supply overseas military bases, fly diplomats in and out of conflict zones and provide cybersecurity and technology for defense and intelligence agencies.

Flynn’s recent moves at FIG -- as well as his partnerships with companies and private-equity executives who have military and intelligence contracts -- could conflict sharply with his government role. Ethics experts say that as the president’s top military-security aide, he will handle classified information on a daily basis and help lead the country’s military, diplomatic and intelligence response around the globe.

Reducing Activities?

Visits to two of Flynn’s offices in Virginia suggest they are reducing their activities: One was empty and being repainted. But neither Flynn, his partners, nor the Trump transition team responded to repeated questions during the past week about how he plans to comply with federal ethics rules that forbid executive-branch employees from having a financial interest in companies that do business with the agencies they lead.

The transition team also hasn’t provided information about Flynn’s business dealings in response to congressional requests. Representative Elijah Cummings, a Maryland Democrat who sits on the House Oversight Committee, wrote to Vice President-elect Mike Pence last month asking for details of Flynn’s business ties and steps he intends to take to avoid a conflict. A Cummings aide said none have been provided.

‘Potential for Pressure’

On Dec. 14, two Democratic senators, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, sent a letter to the nation’s top intelligence officials arguing that Flynn’s ongoing ownership of his consulting company “creates the potential for pressure, coercion, and exploitation by foreign agents.” The letter said FIG is now run by Flynn’s son, Michael Flynn Jr., who was removed from the Trump transition team earlier this month after spreading false internet conspiracies that led to a shooting at a Washington pizzeria.

Flynn is a retired Army lieutenant general who was fired from his post as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency by President Barack Obama in 2014. His nomination as Trump’s national security adviser offers him a key White House role requiring no Senate confirmation. He has been widely scrutinized for his brashness in the two years since leaving the military. He made a paid speech for RT, a news agency run by the Russian government, sat at a table with Russian President Vladimir Putin at a 2015 dinner celebrating RT’s anniversary, shared internet conspiracies on social media and last February tweeted that “Fear of Muslims is RATIONAL.”
