Of course it is because government cares about you... NOT

Apple, Samsung, and other smartphone manufacturers are being asked by federal auto safety regulators to consider adding a “driver mode” to block certain apps and functions to prevent distracted driving. In a guidance released Wednesday — and first reported by The New York Times — the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it envisions driver mode as a “simplified user interface that is intended to minimize distraction experienced by a driver using that device.”

Good rule of thumb is to never believe any time the government wants to implement something for your safety. It's probably to prevent video capture of encounters with cops and associated police state measures. Stuff like that.

The article is full of gems like the admission that anti-texting laws don't work so people must not be given a choice, just controlled.

How the fuck does it know you're not a passenger?

Same goes for these cars that do t let you adjust the Bluetooth or Gps while in drive.

It is everybody's responsibility to pay attention and clear.

Backseat drivers for the safety win.

That's the point. The article mentions they want it to be an automatic thing built into the electronics of the car. Get in the car with a smartphone? Car automatically shuts down whatever apps on the phone it is told to shut down and presumably can't be overridden by those in the car. Great way to shut down video recording apps, for example. DJT promised "law and order" so can't have people filming the next stage of police state implementation. Also could be used to shut down apps that use bandwidth, in case the phone (and/or car) needs the bandwidth for other purposes like tax-by-mile tracking...
