Enter third parties in Maine.
Hopefully other states can follow their lead.

Hopefully it will work better than California's top 2 system, which mostly results in two Democrats running against each other in the General election.

Maine residents have approved a ballot question that will allow voters to rank their choice of candidates.
Under the election overhaul, ballots are counted at the state level in multiple rounds. Last-place candidates are eliminated until a candidate wins by a majority.

So it will all come down to name recognition. Stupid.

Its the greatest thing for third parties. It could make third party voting viable to most people overnight.
It eliminates the entire principle vs pragmatism and "wasted vote" dilemma for so many voters.
A voter can vote for their true first choice with no worry that their vote "will be wasted" or their helping the XXX candidate win.
If their first choice is eliminated their vote goes to their second choice.
Those true first choices (as opposed to merely settling for the major party choices) give a better reflection of the spread of voter sentiment.
