My husband dragged me out to wave Ron Paul signs at the Keystone, CO ski resort parking lot exit this afternoon. I must admit, I was very reluctant at first. It was way below freezing and snowing like crazy. Add to that the fact that I am naturally very shy, and I just plain didn’t want to go. But we got several honks within the first few minutes, and before long, I was thinking it was totally worth it. We counted our honks, and in the 80 minutes we were out there, we got a total of 101! The majority of the cars did not honk, but at least 75% of the people who passed us waved. If waves equaled votes, Ron Paul would win by a landslide. We also got lots of shout-outs for Dr. Paul. Some of the comments we got were: “He’s the only true Republican in this race,” “Bring back freedom!” “Gold standard,” “Ron Paul Revolution” and “He’s got our vote!” Another car that passed rolled down its back seat window, and a kid pointed at his marijuana pipe. We did get a few random comments: “Don’t you mean OJ?” and “Who’s Ron Paul? Is he single?” And the rare negative yell: “Ron Paul sucks (this one by a dad with his teenage kid beside him)” and “F@$ politics!” We did get a couple obscene gestures and a full moon out one passenger window, but these were the exception. There was only one comment supporting another candidate: Huckabee.
The positive support for a couple of young Ron Paul fans was amazing. That got us thinking: is there something about the ski/snowboard culture that is supportive of this revolution, or is this overwhelmingly positive feedback the norm?
Let’s start a game to see who can get 100 honks in the shortest amount of time! Holding signs that ask for honks is cheating. We were just holding the “Ron Paul: Hope for America” signs. There were only two of us standing on a very busy corner; we didn’t need a big group with lots of planning. So we challenge you. Can you beat 101 honks in 80 minutes?
